    Paul: I think I might need to isolate for a bit
    Wife: have you got covid symptoms?
    Paul: nah but I'm probably gonna have snipers at the door soon if I keep going the way I'm going
    Hahaha gotta see the funny side of it all 😅
    EDIT: did a new Mixhub & ev2 null test with the curves matched a bit closer (still not perfectly bang on) AND the compression matched with 5-6db compression (mixbus comp before eq) ... -58 lufs null on a full track haha. I can see via the meters that doctor is correct and the actual compression (excluding THD) is the exact same. The meters actually move identically with the compression matched...
    The main difference is in the THD!!!

What sets him apart from all others, especially on RUclips, is the plethora of people he has actually worked with during his career, that actually sold albums, across multiple genres versus the one trick ponies from blokes no one has ever heard of nor made it into the industry at any point. What I also like about Warren is he started out in hardware solely but does some hybrid works as well. I much prefer gear, but use "some" plugins as well although I dream of having an actual console. • @PaulThird
      @PaulThird  2 года назад +2

      Tbh its a risk doing what I do. You have to be ready to take a bit of shit where it is a much easier option to do the safe review thing. Show the features, look at face value, do a few examples on a few sources with no comparison.. Job done.. Hardly any backlash. Viewers leave with an impartial option.
      I just choose not to do it where possible. There are times when I don't really have a direct competitor for the plugin I'm looking at but I still give my honest unbiased opinion.
      RUclips's hard as for many including myself it helps or fully pays the bills.
      Some get lured by the money as they get bigger, some smaller channels like the free plugins and being chummy with the developers and others just don't have the balls to rock the boat.
      I can't pin the blame solely on the youtubers as its how you pay the bills at the end of the day. I got crap for the accents and characters on this video by a few people now but I knew I needed to do it for better watch time as the subject was too dense to keep viewers attention for a longer view duration.
      I played the YT algorithm and it worked in my favour with a high watch time which in turn gets me more ad revenue which helps pay for the girls Christmas.
      You do what you need to do but I will admit I have shown that you can be brutally honest and transparent and still get good views, retention and devs wanting you to look at their plugin.
      Problem is they target many youtube channels early on so they get them on side before they really start to grow and they have another marketing pawn in the RUclips game.
      Same with beta testers. Makes many feel privileged and gives them a strong connection to the plugin which 9 times out of 10 turns into positive reviews upon release.
      Many many tactics are used for RUclips and social media. I just choose not to comply haha

    Very Amusing. I’ve used one SSL or another virtually every week for the last 40 years. Even owned one. SSL possess tbd hubris often acquired when a company runs a virtual monopoly in their given business sector. Before every cries, ‘ what about Neve?’ Well what about them? The ratio of Neve to SSL consoles is about 5:1 in SSL’s favor. Without going into detail I have witnessed tbd company’s hubris first hand. Some T the company really think they are the be all and end all of recording technology.

Made the horrible mistake to use an old CLA comp on a track this week. Spent a morning opening the Cubase project that crashed 7 times on opening (crash report stating Waves as the culprit). I think every person goes through a phase at first thinking more and newer plugins will make your mixing better (cause they have different presets that might magically work on a particular track). Waves is awesome for that market when you collect 29euro plugins. And then the bill comes later. I was stunned that first time.

    OK, generally I agree with you. The WUP is a rort. There is one good reason for not updating the existing E-channel plugin though and that's backwards compatibility when you open old sessions. Many engineers (me included) would rather a separate plugin in this situation than to change the behaviour of an existing one that is across hundreds or thousands of existing sessions. Even fixing the EQ cramping would have an effect on the sound of an old session opened up. Sure they could do it with an additional "use old broken mode" switch to maintain the same behaviour but in many cases that's just a headache.
    That said, I do agree with you entirely about the seeming lack of real innovation and the hefty "subscription by stealth" thing of the WUP. And I love the roleplaying exposé! I really wonder how Bob is going after walking out. Maybe he'll start his own boutique guitar pedal company...

    I no longer use Waves plugins "except the 10 or 20 I already got suckered into" and out of those I only use 3 or 4. And I will not WUP them up.

  • @PrincipalAudio
    @PrincipalAudio 2 года назад +8

    What I see here is "diminishing returns" to the max. You get a new plugin that does 90% of what another plugin did, but with way more CPU power due to the algorithm they're using. Even if they're using a new algorithm, who actually cares if it sounds virtually the same as another? It's not like the compressor/EQ has a radically different sound - that would be very acceptable. But as we move into the future with new modelling techniques that are "more accurate", I actually see people sticking with older options as the updated sound quality just won't be objectively better than older plugins that use MUCH less CPU power.
    On a similar subject, times are changing with plugins. We're at a very weird crossroads as emulation technology progresses but the sound we hear doesn't change nearly as much. As said before, diminishing returns has already kicked in. It already kicked in with DAWs long ago. I mean, tell me if you can hear the difference between a 16-bit file exported using a 32-bit floating point engine, vs a 32bit float file exported using a 64-bit float engine. You won't be able to. Same is happening with plugin emulation tech. It's already so damn good, so they literally have to up-sell you. And don't get me on the subject of "dithering"...

    • @PaulThird
      @PaulThird  2 года назад +2

      I think CLA Mixhub and ev2 is waves attempt at keeping up with the Jones's but the CPU hit I believe is because they aren't investing in the technology. Bx consoles are pretty low cpu and also internally oversample.
      Overloud low cpu, great sounding plugs
      Its all about the developers. If they got somebody like Ray from fuse audio labs they'd make better plugins. Guys like him, fabrice, fabien, the guys at tone empire, sonible, eventide etc etc thats where the key lies.

    Exactly what I was thinking. I’ve worked in the software industry for a long time and I’ve never seen such practice of charging customers or clients for bugfixes. A new version update, sure charge them. But bugfixes? Heck serious and large software companies could incur a contractual penalty for that sort of crap, and meanwhile a small-a$$ software company (in terms of the general software world) like waves have the nerve to charge for bugfixes. It’s just mind boggling. A solution would have to be something like bugfix releases being separate from version releases. But I doubt Waves would do the right thing because it’s been years like this and they kept doing it anyways. It’s the only reason why I don’t even buy their plugins no matter how tempting the promos are.

      Good plugins. They had one of the best devs in Reymund until he left. Low cpu for the most part. Internal oversampling in the bx stuff. TMT was a good idea as well as the integration of the mono maker, stereo width and stuff.
      They work hard and their plugin subscription is second to none in my opinion and I still pay into it haha
      I don't use as much as I used to and I'm still waiting for my £250 voucher thing but they put the customer first in my opinion. New plugins released all the time, free updates, ability to buy plugins one by one via vouchers and they've now got the pop up shop where they get plugs at lower discounts.
      I still remember when they first started the subscription plan. Pretty sure I was one of the early adopters cause I always had my eye on their stuff. Been a LONG time subscriber anyway
      Me and dirk don't always agree but he's still pretty respectful towards me and I respect that as other CEO's won't even talk to me haha

A couple of the Renaissance plugs have a new GUI, but essentially you're just paying again for the same plugs in my opinion. UAD's business model is also similar. Some of my UAD plugs are now 'legacy' versions and I need to buy them again to have the update. Waves and UAD won't ever have my business again Slate and PSP combined beats the crap out of the competition.

They should have stayed at the premium prices they used to be. Then they wouldn't have to nickle and dime the customer to keep the doors open. People don't respect low prices. People equate high prices as higher quality. It's human psychology. As a business owner I learned this. When I raised my prices I had better quality customers who appreciated my services more. When I charged less, those customers where thee worst to deal with. The more you give, the more they want and they complained more. But it's too late for them now to reverse course.
