Does GPL not punish you with a spin when you go over the grass? Because he dipped his wheels on the Grass quite a lot which normally would result in a spin. I really want to install that game one day, it’s one of those sims I missed out back then since I really wasn’t into open wheelers. Only touring car racing for me back then.

I bought this game in 1998 and my graphics card was not compatible. One year later and an upgrade, my CPU was not compatible. After another year, I was finally able to play the game. This remains the hardest, and most satisfying sim racer ever made. Great driving.

Pentium II era actually. I know, cos i bought the game when it came out and just had bought my rig (P2 400, 64mb RAM, high spec @ the time). I was one of the first in Australia to get my hands on the P2 400. The CPU cost me AUD $1k at the time, and the RAM the same amount. So, a hefty investment.
the best - and it always will be. this game (when i picked it up nearly 20 years ago) put me off modern cars completely and has resulted in my obsession with historic racing. I dread to think how many hours i pumped into it. Great lap BTW - it looks amazing!
I havent played much GP Legends but I love this game to bits! Same with GP4 its probably one of the best sim games out there, the modding community for such old game is awesome!
When you look. Actually, all great games are adding classic cars and try to add classic cicuit. Old spa and Rouen Les Essarts, for Assetto Corsa. Old monza for Iracing. I believe the times are right for a comeback of Grand Prix Legends, with modern graphics, modern physics and lots of cars and tracks of those times. It would sell.
It's part of the latest beta for the GPL Installer that you can find online. I had to delete it shortly after making this video because I was having framerate issues, but I posted a thread on the Sim Racing Mirror Zone and was able to get them. I put a link to the thread in the description for this video... :)
I love the modded sounds from GPL. The original ones that came with the game were terrible, but it didn’t take long before the sim racing community had fixed it for Papyrus!
Wow, I really enjoyed watching this. It's a shame they don't make tracks like this anymore :( Must have been really something as well to drive with the real cars on this bumpy track with such soft and long suspension
Yeah, it’s fairly unique that way, although I know they have done a few things lately to tame a couple of the more harrowing places to stop tourists crashing.
Hard to believe this game came out in 98. The graphics, physics, sounds are on an other level. Funny thing when Gran Turismo is supposed to be "the real driving simulator" :D And with this game it's easy to understand why F1 drivers had big balls. One mistake and you're dead

Lol. Thanks, yeah the sound is fantastic. I run Windows 10 now, though I think I made this back when I was still running win7. I do have it working in Win10 now (just put up a new GPL video last night, actually), so I know it still works. Can’t say I’ve tried either of those two games. I am going to try to use DOSBox soon to get Grand Prix 2 and IndyCar Racing 2 to work. Fingers crossed 🤞

Yeah, I think my record lap in the eagle was around a 7:55 and in the Lotus was something like 7:45. I'd have to look up my old stats on GPLRank. I wonder if it still exists... :D
hey i have a problem: my game is abnormally fast unlike in ur video.. unrealistic.. i cannot go with full speed on straights, if i do that cannot turn.. my english is not good maybe i couldnt tell my problem well but its that.. How i can make it realistic and correct
Boy the margin for error approaching the bridge at the end of the long straight is pretty small. Your steering sensitivity is just a bit off, or if you sneeze approaching it, and you're a charred, greasy spot on the side of the bridge LOL.
+Martin Ludeiro It was OK but far from perfect. Settings on the car had unrealistic effects on the handling of the car. Current games are much more realistic.
To me, the only thing that made the tracks so hard was the terrible physics. I called them on it once, back in the days of win98. They said the kids were having a hard time making the cars drift, so they made it easier. I couldn't take a turn at 15-25 mph without sliding backwards out of the apex. Ridiculous. Otherwise. I loved every bit of it. And they call der Nordschleiffe the " green hell"? Not for somebody that learned driving in a place like the WV mountains with what we called a runner. My grandpa drove those mountain roads in a '53 Victoria SB like Fangio. That got me completely hooked after watching my 1st F1 race in 1957. Fangio kicked booty at the German Grand Prix. So, anyway, yesterday was my birthday, and my daughter & her boyfriend called from SoCal. He said he wanted to buy me a racing game, even though I hadn't played video games in several years. Watching your video today, it suddenly hit me... I texted them to get me Grand Prix Legends for my windows computer. Win10 these days with HD+ 23" screen too. Would be so great to do it again!...sorta like " Hidalgo"...and having had my left hip replaced 2 weeks ago Monday, it'd be great with the pedals and steering wheel to rehab my hands, feet & brain.
The cars had too much grip, so they made the cars harder to 'stick' so kids could drift? I was 26 in 1998 and was (and am) an avid simmer. I had not heard of that before.
no, the physics were active. '67 cars had minimal downforce from wings, and were pre floor based downforce. Drifting the cars was a common thing. You need to go and look at some archival footage of F1 cars from '67.

I think that you can use the demo version (available online) in combination with the GPL Preservation Society's installer to install the game with a lot of the mods/updates, and then just install anything that's missing by downloading it from the GPL Alternate Track Database.
I gotta say, that is some wonderful driving. Do you have any assists on? Also, can you any1 else help me on 2 issues.. Firstly, how can I stop getting so much lateral movement in the car under breaking in this game? It feels too much to me and I can never really truly commit to a corner because iam just too focussed on getting my car stable under breaking (Doe not even have to be heavy breaking sometimes) Second, I have a CSR Fanetec wheel. How can I get some resistance in the wheel on this game? I get the feedback but when that's not coming through the wheel it just feels too light and is not a good experience (Spring and damper settings don't work on the LCD) Thanks in advance for anyone who can help with those :)
Thanks! No I am not using any assists. Regarding braking, these cars require dead-straight braking a lot of the time. Trail-braking has to be done with very light touch. If your finding the car is moving around a lot under braking, try adjusting the brake bias forward (i.e. higher %) in the car setup. You can also try waiting longer to downshift - having the car at high revs under braking will destabilize the car. As for the wheel, there are some adjustments that can be made in one of the settings files, but I can't remember them off hand. The force feedback can work well for you if you take the time to dial it in. With this game being as old as it is, force feedback was just starting to come around at the time and it is a bit clunky. But with some effort you can masks it feel pretty good. If I remember to, I'll try to post on here some of how to adjust the force feedback when I get home tonight.

The only thing iam getting on mine is a bit of resistance when the car get sideways, nothing else :(
Hah! Well, that's still a good time - the GPL Rank benchmark was only a 8:21.931. It's a difficult track, so to beat that by 9 seconds is definitely an accomplishment
How come they could make a game in 1998 where the engine sounds great under braking/downshifting but they can't get it right today. P Cars and Assetto Corsa are great sims but the engines sound pathetic under deceleration. In GPL the engine growls and grunts as you brake and downshift.
So few people will ever understand what an achievement this lap is. Amazing.

IRacing (from the makers of GPL) has a racing series with the Lotus 49. Though I think the only historic track is Monza Combined.
I like the small snippets of tire squeel sounds. Means you're optimizing the car's performance without losing control.

Lauda’s crash was exiting the left kink just before the right-hander of Bergwerk. That kink is at 4:04 in the video.

Did you ever get it working? Sorry I never replied but I believe there is a CPU fix that will correct for the abnormal speed.

Wheel, shifter, and heel-toeing these days. But sure if I was using a full shifter and pedal setup when I set this lap, but I’ve always used a wheel.

In fairness, the sound that shipped with the games was awful. The sounds in this video are mods created by the sim racing community.
