@@Gibson1976uk I think the Z6 and Z7 was never desiged to be PRO bodys! They are well-rounded "prosoumer" cameras and the 1.8F Z lenses fit perfectly for them.
I think the reason Nikon chose to do 1.8 versions first, is they are what the average (enthusiast) will use and they aren't absurdly expensive in most cases (although the 50 1.8 S is a bit higher-priced than I'd like--I feel sometimes it's more like a $399 lens but considering a 50 1.8G is still around $200, maybe $599 isn't too far off--just 2x the price but the optics are better comparatively). That being said, I think many pros will just adapt their 1.4's to their Z cameras (or just wait to upgrade to Z when Nikon does start releasing fast 1.4's). Nikon is just trying to catch up to everyone else (mainly Sony) in the prime lens dept, and since they had to basically re-design all the Z lenses, this takes time, so they wanted to create the lens that they knew most people would buy. To me, as an enthusiast, who doesn't really get a return on investment, the 1.8's offer great value/quality at a price point I can manage. To me, the little extra bokeh or gains you get from going to a 1.4 isn't justifiable financially (for my needs). This being said, my Z 85 1.8 has become my new favorite portrait lens, and sadly, I've been using it way more than my adapted Tamron 70-200 2.8 G2 lens (which I'm thinking about selling now because I've been shooting strictly with the 85 for the past few months now and love the results, not to mention the size and weight). (One big issue for me with the 70-200 is shooting verticals because Nikon didn't have enough foresight into creating a proper grip w/ controls for the Z6/Z7 bodies... which is a huge fail on their part). My hope is the "rumored" z6s/z7s have this option when released (as I would greatly upgrade my Z6 to a new Z6 body if it supported a vertical grip with controls). But shooting with the 85, this isn't as much of a concern because it's so small and light. I just find it difficult to use proper technique when shooting vertically with my 70-200 on the Z without a vertical grip. Can be done, but not as pleasant because of the size and weight of a 70-200 lens.
I been shooting Nikon for many years, loyal based here. Or maybe just a lot invested in F mount glass. I use different 3rd party lenses and a a few Zeiss lenses. My 135mm app sonnar, which is very close to the otis line have always been in my bag paired with my D850 and it gives amazing results. I have bought a Z 7ii and my first z lens is this 85/ 1.8. I have to say it ranks up there towards the Zeiss wide open and today was the first day in a long, long time I never had the Zeiss in my bag. Really liking this lens

I think his apologetic statements here are more geared towards his Die-hard Nikon fans. Man he got so much hate on that video from them even though he was just being honest about his thoughts towards the current models Nikon has. Some of the people suddenly got mad just because he thought that the current systems sony has are better than the ones from Nikon.
Plenty of social media and other Nikon pros (Nikon Ambassadors) out there making the switch for mirrorless systems. We contacted Sony to try and get an a7 III on loan with no luck. We have used the Z7 thru NPS which was great. We have too much invented in Nikon gear to make the switch now so are staying with DSLR. Wouldn't mind seeing what all the hype is with Sony tho. Thinking of purchasing a Sony at Best Buy and exercising the 30 day return policy?

Native Z primes are the way to go. As you said: they feel solid, are silent and weather sealed. Why get a Z camera if you're you are going to keep using the old F lenses with the adapter? I own a Z85mm 1.8 / S, I love it ! ! . What would be the difference/advantage if it was a f/1.4?
I prefer also Z prime lenses but still using 85 1.4 F mount for portraits. I haven’t tried this lens but I guess it might be like 50 1.8 Z which is fabulous. Love your Nikon lens review....you will surely come back to Nikon completely! I believe I deserve some answers to my comments, I watch each and every video and follow you on IG!
I sold my Sigma 85mm 1.4 for this lens, and ironically the only thing I miss is the weight. Just as bright and just as sharp. This 85 has been my favorite for weddings and family portraits compared to the 35 s and 50 s.
to8ni I did have the Sigma Art f/1.4 but for the Z series the 85 1.8 S is the best choice hands-down. I’ve used it in weddings for photo and video, and gives you better AF performance and image quality. Don’t let the idea of 1.8 vs 1.4 fool you, the Sigma is pretty dark at 1.4 anyway with some very heavy vignette and slow to focus.
I think it makes sense launching the 1.8 lenses first, because when the 1.4 and 1.2 ones come out, there will be people who will be like "this piece of glass is so nice, I'm gonna buy it".
I think it depends on the objective when selling. Is the objective to sell the 1.8 lenses and then sell the 1.4 lenses, then the 1.2 lenses and then the 1.0 to the same customers? Then yes it makes sense. But if your objective is to overwhelm the competition and outperform the F-mount with absolutely superior lenses, then it does not make sense. Outperforming the F-mount lenses by a big margin would make the Z-mount a lot more appealing for the current Nikon user base but also for customers from other vendors. Nikon going for the first option is understandable but I would have preferred the second option. Also I would like to see some Z-Mount tele-zoom lenses, currently there is only the one DX 50-250. The upcoming 70-200mm f/2.8 could be interesting.
85mm 1.8G Vs 85mm 1.8S Please rate both lenses out of 10 for photo and video? Because as per some reviews older version i.e 85mm 1.8G focuses faster than the newer S lens. S lens is more smoother

I own a 85mm 1.8G, Im used with it with no VR on my D600 and paid full price for it, and it always surprises me with its sharpness, colors etc. Now coupled with the in camera Vr from the Z6 or Z7 why would I need 2/3 stop from the future 1.4Z if the 1.8Z is already so expensive ?? I'll take the adapter, thank you.

I almost always leave my FTZ adapter attached to my old 50mm 1.4 in the bag, seems like I use the big zooms on a DSLR still as its more comfortable to hold but this one is nice use
if you are shooting concerts or nightlife photos, edit them in Capture one or something other than lightroom...lightroom renders the artificial light at high iso horribly and and more often you'll see harsh blown out lights.. espcially with blues and magentas...
Bought the 50mm when I got my Z6 but I’ve barely brought it out of the bag since nabbing the 24-70 2.8. It’s just so great for my workflow and I don’t feel like I’m making any “zoom” compromises when shooting it. Can’t recommend it enough.
Maybe people wouldn't call you a shill if you didn't forcibly remind us all the time that you're using Sony and their superior lineup in a goddamn lens review.

The 85 1.8G on a D750 is still stellar even after 6 years with them they are so good together. I’d love to see a shootout between a Z6 with the S and a D750 (or it’s upcoming replacement) with the G! 85 on full frame is such a flattering look, it’s like cheating at photography
You'd see similar results I owned the combination before selling them both and switching to the Z6 which has just been a joy to use. The 85S is sharper edge to edge which doesn't matter in portraits center sharpness is about the same. At F/1.8 in bright conditions I got quite a bit of color fringing on my G lens that I haven't noticed any on my S lens at all, focusing is much quieter than the G on the S, but overall I can say you'd get about the same results high ISO is better on the Z6 and the Z6 is just an amazing camera to use I thought I'd keep both, but I sold my D750 in the end. The G is no slouch and still a fantastic lens though.
Hey Jared, one question please...As a Fuji X-System landscape and product photographer, I am strongly contemplating moving into FF, with either a Nikon Z7 or a Sony a7Rlll. Two questions please...Does the Nikon Z (S Mount) System have a good Macro lens on par with the supposedly stellar Sony 90 f/2.8 G OSS Macro? (Though I'd put my Fujinon XF80 f/2.8 Macro against any macro in terms of image sharpness!) And, have you experienced a "sensor Dust" issue with any of your Sony bodies? Thank you sir! Steve

@@froknowsphoto Dude, your are posting toxic comments filled videos about Nikon for the the last one year or so while at the same time going out of way to praise Sony. Nobody does that kind of marketing for free for a big corporation like Sony. You are doing that in videos like above that has nothing to do with Sony.
Just because a lens has a wider maximum aperture doesn't automatically make it "better glass." I don't believe you'll find a better 85 than the 85/1.8S. That's right, I said it.
The whole section at 3:55 about not wanting to use the FTZ adapter....this is my problem with the reviews. I have zero problems with the FTZ adapter, it feels just like shooting native lenses to me. And they allow us to use the old lenses with giant pieces of glass, versus the weird new software-corrected tiny mirrorless lenses which work really well, but lack some of the character of the giant glass lenses of yesteryear. Just my 2 cents, it feels like the FTZ lens discussion is really excessive.
Also, why is anyone that excited about a 1.4 lens? These magical mirrorless big flanges were supposed to make f1.0 possible in an AUTOFOCUS lens. If it's not 1.0, I honestly am not that impressed. F 1.4 is the same shit we've had for like 70 years (I mean, I'm not that old but...70 years!) and we still can't move past that.
The point has nothing to do with the lenses not working fine. I love the adapter, it works. But when you're switching quickly between Z lenses and F lenses with the adapter you run into issues. Sometimes you take the whole adapter off when you meant to just take off the lens. Or you the lens off and want to but a z lens on and now you have to still take the adapter off. For what I shoot, I can't have it be that slow when im switching.
@@froknowsphoto That is definitely a fiddly and annoying situation, but two bodies and two lenses pretty much covers most stuff for most photographers. Great video as always! I have a question though at 8:54 you can see a pattern web like, it happens to me a lot in concerts and I'm guessing it's the sensor(?) that the lens profile correction in lightroom warps a little the image and instead of being a square pattern it turns into a more noticeable web like pattern. Do you guys see this as acceptable or do you disable the lens correction in lightroom? I find it somewhat distracting and I tend to disable it so it disappears. Thanks!

Got a d750 some weeks ago, it's incredible for its money.
I have been using a Nikon D700 and D3 for events! done stuff all over the place last year! nobody has issues with my pictures! the older stuff still works :) I did think about the D750 but waiting to see how the D780 turns out? the D750 is a bargain these days!!! it is solid for Wedding/fashion/studio work :)
@@Gibson1976uk Glad, I am not the only one still sporting a D700. I have three of them that I use for weddings. I have never had anyone complain either. The Z system will be my next upgrade though.

I love, love, love this lens!! I'm glad you still have Nikon in your heart!! =)
Marco Antonio Regil He doesn't. He read his RUclips analytics and figured that he stands to lose a chunk of followers with his anti nikon rants. So now he softly adds in negative stuff like "not so cheap feeling, cheap feeling lens hood". And "why nikon first launched 1.8 lenses first". As if the market buys more 1.2s vs 1.8s.
@@mainmain5303 It would be a good sign I only viewed this one because it was of specific interest. I don't care for the hype of these channels anymore where everyone is whining about certain features of a camera mirrorless cameras. While you will get great results from any system modern system you buy today and no one can shoot without a good Eye AF system when people and pros have been doing it for decades. 🤷♂️
kelsier rayner exactly! Since when did eye af become THE thing in camera (and not image quality or dynamic range or built quality/ long term durability and reliability)??? Since Sony started marketing eye af and put money in the hands of Influencers after they failed with their crappy phones all over the world! And the Influencers will keep telling you "they haven't paid me"! Haha the online marketing game begins with "Influencer plan". That's the first section of the teams presentation.

Jared you are wrong :D ... i know you love 1.2 glas but for the actual Z cameras the 1.8 fits perfectly and $2500 glas would not make sense for it. In the end of 2020 Nikon will deliver their first pro Z Bodys + pro lenses ...that's a good plan from Nikon. Canon delivered a consumer RF cameras + pro RF lenses ---> that's stupid :D
I agree, most people, including pro's!! will not need/use F1.2 lenses!! I do photography jobs and my workhorse lens has been the Nikon 85mm F1.8G!! its made me money!!! :) nobody complains :) I do own a Zeiss 85mm F1.4 but thats manual, I'll use it for certain things! if you go for F1.2 the price goes crazy! would you want to spend your earnings on that costs so much?? people really are not that bothered if you don't have F1.2 for a job :)
I used 3 of the new S lenses for Z mount. I find all 3 to be better than their F mount equivalents.
Jared in a shirt that fits. Never thought I'd see the day.
I adapt the 85 f/1.8 on my Z6 and love it. I am waiting to pick up some native glass
The Weeaboo Dragon same. 👍🏻
Same! No complaints whatsoever.
I adaped as well at the beginning, finally got the 85 and 50mm S lens now. it´s a huge difference, don´t wanna go back anymore!
Going for the 50mm as my tax return Christmas gift to myself and my friend and I shoot together and he has the Z 50 so our next step is splitting cost on the 24-70mm 2.8
I LOVE this lens! I've got the 24-72.8, 105 and 50 MC 2.8, and assortment of f Mount lenses but I find that I use the 85 more than any other
Love this lens. Gorgeous images.
If you're not careful you'll convince yourself to switch back to the Z system :) I just bought this lens and it is superb on my Z6s.
Is this a good lens for a Nikon Z50
I have it since a few months and the 35, 50 and 85 1.8 are awesome. No matter if on the Z6 or Z7.
Can I use it on a z5 ?
@@michealokafor5722 🤗 yes of course. Why do you think you shouldn't? You may use it on all Z cameras. On the APS-C Z's it's cropped to 127.5 mm equivalent (cropped!!!! not optically longer).

What I love the most about this video is how simple and interesting the information is presented. I could not believe how quick the video when by. Nice work young man. Jose.
You have to admit the image quality of Nikon Z6 and S mount are ridiculously very good
The lens snob finally found time to review this lens.. Well I bought it before the review and it's an awesome portrait lens of course, but not as amazing and versatile as the 50mm S F/1.8 I don't think anyway I haven't used it enough to fully say though.

Hi Jared. On your Z's and A7s/A9s are you finding that the sensor is getting dusty and requires frequent cleaning (like before every use)?
I'll wait till the 1.2 comes out, then decide: either the 1.2 or a second hand 1.8 :)

@Mason lab brand loyalty triggering people to the point that the photography community starts arguing about what brand to use is IMO dividing what is IMO one of the most amazing artistic communities.
@@SkipperGeffen absolutely. Unfortunately it's what pays his bills so has to make these videos
At this point, It's situational. Nikon for some still portraits and landscapes vs Sony for that other stuff.
When the f1.2 or f1.4 Z mount lenses will be released, this will cost half, because that is the real price. Same for the other f1.8 Z lenses that cost double.
Jup, i feel that as soon Nikon does release a 1.4 or Sigma or Tamron release a nice Z mount lens the price of this lens will crash.
Man you don’t need to be that apologetic to Nikon. Your previous video was clear enough and you stated your reasons very respectfully. That should be enough. Great review btw.
Come on back to Nikon Jared, me and the rest of the Nikon shooters believe in you. I can never leave my D850.
demorris byrd give nikon some time to make a good mirrorless and he will return... as a Sony shooter I know it’s only a matter of time because canon and nikon are catching up fast and sony is also sleeping after the a7iii (2 year ago)

Looking at your gig photo settings I wish I could shoot at more gigs with good lighting, so many local venues don't seem to care at all about lights so I'm at setting like 6400 ISO f2.8 1/160. And still bumping them up in post
Noisey and blurry great!
The Z series cameras are great. We just need more lenses.

The 70-200 will be released today at CES
@@tallaganda83 that would be a nice surprise. The rumors site says March 2020.
2020
Its time for ultimate SONY lens kit
...the happiness you have in this video is like on the Tamron's for Sony...😕
Happy new year 🎊🎆 amigo!
85mm 1.8G Vs 85mm 1.8S
Please rate both lenses out of 10 for photo and video?
Because as per some reviews older version i.e 85mm 1.8G focuses faster than the newer S lens. S lens is more smoother
I love your stuff Jared and Crew, but that was a little like watching someone struggling for possession of their own mind whilst being possessed by Jason Lanier :)
Thanks for the review. Lot's of good information. I appreciate your "act" and all the information. Good job! 😎👋📸

I have a z50 and i am beginner. What lens do you recommend for portraits? Also what lens do you recommend for indoor basketball and lastly what lens do you recommend for outdoor American football. Please help. Thank you. Love the channel.
If this is the S-Line, imagine the G-Line how it'll be. I'll hold off until then.
So the question is this or the 50mm f1.8 S??? Can't decide!
Your right..getting frustrated with adapted lenses. Going to either pick up the 35, 50, and 85 or should I just go with the 24 70 2.8?
Bought the 50mm when I got my Z6 but I’ve barely brought it out of the bag since nabbing the 24-70 2.8. It’s just so great for my workflow and I don’t feel like I’m making any “zoom” compromises when shooting it. Can’t recommend it enough.
Maybe people wouldn't call you a shill if you didn't forcibly remind us all the time that you're using Sony and their superior lineup in a goddamn lens review.

Exactly, he needs an I use Sony shirt.
Jared, what are your thoughts on the D780 for filmmakers? Stick with the Z series?
A dslr with a mirror flipped up is a mirrorless canera.
@@froknowsphoto I know ;) I was referring to other key capabilities like continuous autofocus for those that need subject tracking, detailed 4k, color accuracy...,
Nice ones, good review man!

Steve
Do you use external flash when doing portrait's?

This review was a good one, glad you didn't bash Nikon too too hard here haha. Considering this lens soon
can you please review the Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 S and share the Raw file?
I have no doubt you took Sony money. You did a lot of Sony marketing while doing a review of an excellent lens.
That’s cool. You have no doubt. And I have no doubt you have no clue what you’re talking about. So there’s that.
The ignorance of commenters like you is insane. You have no clue.
Lens hoods are outrageously priced.
Any time you're taking lenses off cameras mid-shoot it totally sucks the fun out of the day. I hope my comment wasn't too negative, I really enjoy your videos and insights. And with so much out there, it's impossible for everyone to love every opinion all the time. Your avoidance of push back from nikon fanatics has been pretty impressive tbh. I think you have a future career in politics... ;)

Thanks!
Great video 👍 sure it's a decent lens.

Jared Polin better or more? I would like to know in what way the Sony cameras have given you “better” moments? That may make a good video to do. This is essentially saying - Yes - it is the camera that makes the photographer and not the other way round.
