Nikon is going to sell a lot of these. If Fuji can get $2K from people for an APS-C retro styled body this is a no brainer for Nikon. Especially with the improved AF, articulating screen and dual card slots. In competent hands, this camera can be a workhorse for sure.
Fujifilm does however have a large selection of lenses with a marked aperture ring to provide the full retro/classic experience. Use a third party lens with no aperture ring with one of its classic styled cameras and it's just not the same. Meanwhile at Nikon it's just crickets in the lens department. No ZF series of lenses? Not even one for the launch? And what's up with having a PASM lever as well? Training wheels? You achieve that with the dials if you are buying the camera for the dials. Open goal for Nikon with no Fuji FF for those that feel that they need that. But it feels Nikon is only half committed to retro - just after the superficial aesthetic. And I agree with Fro, if you just want the aesthetic, the zfc is plenty, or go for the real deal with a Fuji that actually provides the full retro package.
@@stra998 I thought so too, when I first tried a Fuji, but I quickly learned how to set up the camera and edit the files properly. In the right hands you'll struggle to see much difference if any between pictures taken with Fuji APSC or M4/3 for that matter all other things being equal. Start with don't use Lightroom and go from there. There's reasons to choose any brand or format over others, but these days if you get bad images out of any system, it's not the camera.
Who cares if it looks cool. This nikon camera is an ergonomic mess. Canon has been getting praise for years for their class leading ergonomics for years. There is no reason for them to stop, a camera is not a fashion statement.
@@EddySawaya8637Who cares!! Speak about yourself, there are many people that cares how cool the camera looks. And no it’s not an ergonomic mess, I would take this over Leica Q3 when it comes to ergonomic. Anyway, not everyone has the same taste as yours.
It's prolly quite suited to street, equipped with a manual focus lens. But street doesn't need 14+ fps, clever AF, 8-stop IBIS or ultra-capable video. I suppose you could use it in the street one day then go to a ball game the next with some long glass (though sounds like that's not advisable) then on safari with the same long glass or do a bit of landscapery, then set it up in a portrait studio after that; if, indeed, you're into multiple genres. But then what's the point of the retro look? If you just want something for the street, buy an old film camera, a nifty 50 or 35/1.4 and go forth.
As a Nikon Z6 II owner you were absolutely right about the Z6 III part, like they gave this the Expeed 7… in combination with higher fps, better screen rotation system. A retro looking camera that outperforms my Z6 II. On the other hand this gets me hyped for the upcoming Z6 III!
@@cottonbomb8272 Will you take better photographs when you have one? Some of history's greatest and most memorable and famous photographs were shot on film with manual everything. I can't help feeling that if you get carried off on the AF/FPS/MP tech wave you're missing something about the art.
@@Adrian-wd4rn As a Fuji shooter, I will tell you the crop sensor size literally doesn't matter. As a pro, it does absolutely. But I'm a systems architect and a hobbyist photographer, I couldn't care less. Too many sacrifices for a bigger sensor. I bought the D850 when it came out and I ended up not shooting much because it was big and bulky with all of that full frame glass. But I didn't know any better at the time. I was just taking advice from professional photographers always going "you have to have full frame". So I did. It's not even a money thing for me, I could buy two Z9's for the cost of my watch. I just don't need the low or wide angle performance of full frame. A LOT of people don't. I don't do giant prints. And I'll bust out the D850 for a family portrait once in a while but otherwise it's just collecting dust.
Fuji has proven the retro styling cameras sell and that is why Nikon created this and released it before the Z6 III (IMO) so that new camera wouldn't eat into the Z8 sales.
That’s exactly it. They want Z6/II users to upgrade to a Z8. They want to use the Zf to capture a new market that wouldn’t even consider the Z8. One Nikon has exhausted all users that will upgrade from a Z6 to a Z8, the Z6iii will come out. My guess is an announcement late Feb/March next year.
I am directly in the target market for this camera. I like the ZFc but wanted Full Frame. Didn't care for the modern-style cameras. I have old Nikon film cameras and just want a digital version of those. The Zf is exactly what I've been waiting for.
@@danieljones8706 Hello other person in the target market. I have a Z7 II but don't really need the high megapixel count. I also have a Zfc and really enjoy it, aside from wishing it had IBIS. In theory it might be a downgrade in tier, but I'm going to trade in the Z7 II for the Zf. I really love the aesthetics of the retro style cameras and the amount of performance you can get from such a good looking camera now is insane. I'll add the Smallrig grip like I did with the Zfc and as a non pro, it'll be enough for anything I do.
Here's another angle: I love the tactile experience of my Nikon film cameras and I do think they're cool and just a little easier to hang around the neck and go (large lens notwithstanding) and I've been waiting for a proper digital full frame camera in this form factor for my entire time as photographer. And it's brilliant! So yes, I'll be buying one to replace my Z5 as my backup/travel camera
Current Nikon Z fc owner here. Nikon is going to crush it with this camera, and I absolutely cannot wait to try it out. I don't agree that having dials is just for the "cool" factor. I sometimes like using old lenses in full manual, and being able to manage shutter/ISO just as I would adjust lens focus and aperture with chunky tactile controls feels totally natural.
I have one and I broke out lenses I haven't used in decades. Other than the first day I was playing with it right out of the box, I'm shooting with old glass and in full manual. For me, it's basically my brand new digital FM 2 with a few bells and whistles.
I agree with you, that this camera is not the choice of a working pro, but don‘t forget that for most people photography is not business, it is hobby and enthusiasm. Like some cars make no sense in terms of usability or cost, but they are fascinating people. If I where a Nikon shooter I would order this camera at once and hoping, that the Sigma i-Series lenses would become available for z-mount! The i-series and the Zf would be a perfect match…
Precisely. There are more hobbyist photographers than pro photographers. Just like there are more pilots than there are professional pilots. That's one point that Jared doesn't get. He views things through the same narrow lens of just the professional. He's a good photographer, but over the years I found his transition from a humble professional who peddles in lots of great humor and sarcasm to blurring those lines between humor and sarcasm and now comes off as outright cocky and/or pushing an agenda. Case in point, a lot of the times he complains about foreground objects misinforming locked eye detection I've rarely replicated it. In the cases I have it was when a shot was captured while the lens was changing focus. It is if it was focused on the bubble wand it then acquired the eye and the shot that he captured was the transition shot after acquiring the eye but still focused on the wand. Perhaps it would be more informative in those cases if Nikon were to render the focus square as red until the I was in focus. If that's what he's talking about in terms of a fix I agree. However he presented as a failure the focus system. Given my own experience and watching his video I feel he is well aware what the actual problem is but to push the agenda of Nikon being behind he doesn't dig deeper in the video.
@@ElGrecoDaGeekI think he is doing it intentionally, he will always find a way to bash on nikon for whatever reason, probably the absence of a nikon money truck on his garage😅
It’s so obvious this guy hates Nikon so much and tries to find issues even if there are none. That’s why I watch it if there’s a real issue he will find it to burn Nikon down. Now I know it’s an awesome camera 😂 thank you
@@VIDEOVISTAVIEW2020 Sure did, actually he’s known for hating on Nikon. Besides being quite arrogant and not funny. He does understand gear but he’s biased. The Zf is awesome. Engraved dails, brass, a modern time FM2. This will be a success.
This seems like a wonderful camera. Not every photographer needs god tier AF and super high end specs to get the results they want. It’s funny in how specs keep getting better and better, eventually things like the camera’s appearance matters more; after a certain point these cameras are nearly perfect with ludicrous horsepower…what’s left? How about this camera I’m carrying around all day looks nice? The Zf isn’t an utterly perfect camera but it sounds like a win for Nikon, and to get in the door for $2240 for the camera and a lens, I’m tempted to get one myself.
Overall I would say Nikon did a good job. The autofocus is getting better for sure. I've loved everything about Nikon cameras except the autofocus. It has me excited about the Z6-III (if it ever comes to reality). I think Nikon's build quality is wonderful feeling. I'm hoping I can "come home" to Nikon one day. I love my Canon, but the egos just don't feel right to me, and the menus are still confusing to me after one year living with one.
Considering how the ZFC apparently sold bucket loads I'm assuming this is aimed at the Japanese market and younger people and college grads and such. There's definitely a market for it. Probably also parents that want something a little smaller, also looks like a great "date" camera. Something you walk out with put in a bag with a 35 1.8 or the 26 pancake and have fun with. It's basically chasing after the same low footprint crowd that the A7CII chases after. I'd buy one...easily actually.
I think the grip is fine if you're using it with a small prime or zoom lens.. like the Lecia Q and Sony Rx1 etc.. they dont have good grip too.. but if the whole package is small enough.. it's kinda alright.
As a wedding / portrait photographer, this camera fits my style and branding while having the perfect specs as well. I didn't need 45mp to process, don't need a big heavy camera ( Been there done that with D4s ), works perfect as I already had and sold a ZDF to make sure I was going to be ok with the ergonomics. First impressions as I've shot around the house, is that it is perfect for my needs. I will be taking them out this weekend for a shoot. I don't think I will be disappointed. I just hope Lightroom supports the camera files!
I'm an old guy with a LOT of vintage lenses. I learned to shoot with a Yashica FX-2... this camera will feel so right in my hands. The fact that I can go "old school" and the dials will make me feel right at home... and put on some Z lenses that bring me to 2023... all in one camera. Yep... I'll buy one, and use it a LOT.
This year Nikon has focused on releasing NEW cameras and lenses, not the next versions of existing ones. Next year will be the year of new versions. I expect that next year we will see a Z5II, Z50II, Z6III and Z7III. Nikon isn't as big as Canon or Sony, so it takes Nikon a little longer to release new stuff. But for those who are patient, with Nikon you get great gear at lower prices than Canon or Sony (most of the time).
I switched over to Fuji from Canon FF a few years ago and now shooting anything else just feels boring. Having physical dials that you can adjust, even with the camera off, is genius. But not having FF has always bothered me. Now this camera could be what I’ve been itching for. Shame non of Nikon lenses have an aperture ring however. Still, there’s a few nice Voigtlander lenses for Z mount now. Which also compliment the “cool look” I know Jared not everyone cares about looks. But some of us do. Otherwise Apple wouldn’t be in business. 😁
The normal level of snarkiness from the JP - no this vid was a we bit more optimistic. So thanks for that. OK what did JP hate -- let me predict - EVF resolution, LCD resolution, Auto-Focus, battery life, micro SD, LCD flippy great but no tilt on back like Sony. I was wrong - you did not HATE the EVF or LCD well not upfront. No views on most of the rest. Then at 2 mins in test version did not have the optional grip - SO BUY the Freekling optional grip. The camera is NOT FOR YOU - it is for Asian men who carry handbags and their beret wearing german/central european equivalents. I expect most will buy some matching colour. It is certainly NOT a camera for either working pros nor blue collar parsimonious mid-westerners or most folk on forums. Few potential owners would understand portrait orientation and simply will shoot landscape. OK a very few "vlogger"?"selfie idiots will stick this on a stick and shoot themselves - well the grip is a non issue and I expect SmallRig will have an l-bracket with grip out soo as well.. The target audience will get a camera to match their handbags and shoes and probably hair colour. AND how about this don't freaking shoot at f/1.2 when your subject is close !!!! NOT an issue if you use a reasonable aperture. Yes slow shutter read will lead to warping. Well it is HALF the price of the Z8 so... Lack of documentation leave many questions - but one for YOU -- what card were you using to get a hot warning? Clearly not a top V90 UHS II. Were you writing to both cards. Most should not use the Micro SD EVER. The iii's will come in 2024 - as has been predicted for some time. in the meantime any working pro Nikon shooter should buy a Z8 and or a Z9 -- if you need the capabilities then buy the gear you need and stop whining.
Nail on the head. With its bang up-to-date internals, the retro look is a head-scratcher and seemingly pointless. Want the retro look and to 'slow down' and attract interest from passers-by who think you've gone all last century while telling you they, too, used to have an old Nikon and shoot film? Go and buy an old Nikon, some manual primes and go shoot film. Cheap as chips*, as much 'tog fun as you could poke a viewfinder at, all the dials you want without the cheaty finger wheels and digital backup and hugely beneficial to your 'tog skillset. * I'm talking about acquisition of course. Film and processing costs can put folks off. But do it at home rather than pay to have it done and costs come down and enjoyment goes up. And, believe me, when you know that each shutter release costs you actual money, you learn to take far fewer shots; compose, focus and expose right first time; and up your keeper rate. And you learn to chimp in the viewfinder before, not on the screen after. Which is not really chimping. It's being a better photographer.
I do think these new Nikon retro digital cameras are absolutely beautiful but I do 100% agree with what you said about sticking with old Nikon legacy gear and just the real tactile experience in general. That's what stopped me from caving in and buying a ZFc or ZF. I couldn't justify the upfront cost (especially the ZFc). When I took a breath, contemplated, emptied my shopping cart and then looked at my Nikon FM2N - I realized how long it takes me to finish rolls of film and develop myself, so it's really not that pricey at the rate I shoot. Just...messy and a bit of work making visits to the chemical dump facility. Until the day film is officially dead, then I would totally go for one of these. So for now, a Nikon D850 and D800E for work, FM2N for fun....and then someday I'll upgrade to mirrorless bodies.
Great to see they worked out this micro sd thing, lot of storage at cheap price and redundancy, in a small space. Amazing to see the Expeed 7 processor, better af and new great features. Great product overall Nikon 👏. Very HYPED for the Z6iii to update my beloved z6.
This is why I love Jared's reviews. What I wanna know is how these cameras perform when there's a kid running around or playing with toys etc and Jared tests these situations. Thanks a lot, Jared and hope you keep doing such reviews!!
I'm a Z fc user and I'll do the upgrade to the Z f. Why? I miss a full frame sensor (I also got a D800, not much used in the last 2 years) and I like the look of the Z f and it's small size. Also some features like improved AF, improved IBIS and eye-detection in manual focus mode (I like to use some older lenses). I'm not a pro, so maximum usability is not so important. Thanks for the pReview and your thoughts about the camera.
I still have the Nikon df, the camera that everyone hated on release, and was heavily critized. I Absolutely love it and will probably get the ZF as well
I got my sunset orange Zf today. It’s heavier than expected, reminds me the old solid metal body. So I understand the grip complain, but retro style camera should be held retro way, with left hand resting on the palm, so I don’t have issue with the lack of handle. I’m glad I bought this Zf after unloading all my Z gears two years ago. It sits next to the very first camera I bought, a Nikon FG (couldn’t afford FM2 when I was a student) and the only DSLR I kept, a Nikon Df, Zf definitely looks like at home other than the loud orange color. Tried it with Voightlander 40mm f1.2, it is an excellent combo. The EVF is better than Z6 to me. Also added an orange color shutter release button, it’s perfect now. Yeah, I would prefer a photo only, tilt screen camera. For video, I have Sony FX30 and Insta360 RS One. Hybrid just means compromise to me.
I agree with you on holding it the retro way. I just got back from a two week trip with a friend of mine. Hell, we carried FM 2's for decades of our careers. We also carried medium formats. We pretty much had our cameras around our necks for two weeks unless we were in a restaurant. I can't recall her complaining about her hands cramping, and I know mine weren't. That said, if he really needs a grip, attach a $25 flash bracket on the camera. I use a flash bracket all the time when I feel like I'm going to be taking a lot of really critical shots. Honestly, I love using a flash bracket. I've often used them when I'm not even using flash.
Im slipping into semi retirement from a long career as a pro. I just sold my Z6ii in favor of this camera. This will basically be my walk around and vacation camera. 8 stops of VR, and a good conversation piece to boot. Also, since I started shooting film in the 70s, its a nostalgia thing for me. Im also going to have a Z8 in the wings if I get a few work gigs here and there.
I just picked up the Nikon Z FC and I love it for travel. Wanted it while I waited for the release of the Z6iii, but now do I pick up the ZF or see what improvements come with the Z6iii when released
This type of camera is meant to be cool and retro, like fujifilm cameras keep alive. It’s not going to be the most ergonomic thing sin the world. I see it as a fun, enthusiast type camera meant for a pancake lens shooting street photography or point and shoot style photos. It’s definitely not intended for a professional type camera, which is why I am okay with the micro sd card as the second card. Still better than just a single card slot.
I'm definitely giving it a serious look, but then for my Nikon's I still haven't gone to mirrorless, so the question of do I want the Z8, Z9, or Zf, and how much am I willing to spend is still an open question. While I do like the retro aesthetic and dials, if I already owned a Z, I probably wouldn't give it serious consideration.
Yes, Ive got a Z6ii and have been waiting for a Z6iii with the Z8 auto focus. But this camera offers a lot. I Wonder if many people will just but this and the wait for the Z6iii. That begs the question... wwhat will the z6iii be able to offer?
The Zf is for people that want everything in one. If you are right Jared - it wont sell. But I reckon it will be popular and was a great choice. I want one. The market is Nikon shooters. A camera for the fans.
Yeah, I definitely wish this looked the way it does but with a deeper grip (a la Olympus). Then they could turn the battery, make the thing a little less wide (from screen hinge to grip) AND fit 2 SD/CFEtB slots.
I speculate Nikon intended to release this camera before the z6iii to test the waters with the expert 7 in the mid tier camera bodies. Excited to see what the next line up will look like. Seems nikon is finally stepping up!
Well I bet they came out with this first to sell more of them, then the Z6III on Expeed7 will come. Strategically released timing. That and more focused production runs.
I use my Nikon z fc a lot for video calls. I realize that having dials is a retro thing, but it sure is nice to be able to reach out and adjust ISO without repositioning myself.
OMG, it cramps his poor little hands!! Glad to report I've had no hand cramps, nor did I for two decades carrying an FM and FM 2. Also, one of my friends just bought one as well. She is a very well known photographer in the US. We just got back from a trip where we carried then pretty much everywhere for two weeks. If you want, I can ask a 60 year old petite woman to tell you how to make your poor little hands not cramp. Pretty easy to tell who never spent a day carrying a Mamiya RB 67. 😆
@7:50 don't know what you are talking about. The Zf also has expeed 7 processor like the Z8 and Z9. So the computing hardware is pretty much the same but its AF is still inferior to the Z8/Z9.
People like retro styling, it’s a conversation starter, and it also doesn’t look “professional”. I just took my camera to an event that “professional cameras weren’t allowed”. I have a silver XT5 and had a Zeiss 50mm sonnar attached. I have a small rig grip but removed it for this. There is a use case for this type of camera, not everyone wants a bulky grip. I have the Z6 and I do like the ergo but I don’t think it’s bad to have the option of a smaller grip
As you said near the end of the video, a near full analog camera that uses a digital sensor, with the little winder lever and all that would be cool as all heck. I'd probably try and buy it and use it over my current camera.
It’s an awesome idea but Jaren’s idea of *removing* features usually adds to the cost. You need to raise the price of such a niche product to cover the R&D. Plus the winder mechanism would need to re-engineer a lot of the body if it actually was a functional winder at all and not just a little piece of metal like the Leica M10-D’s cosmetic advance lever.
@@Kevon420 Yea doesn't make sense to add that from engineering point of view. A lot of work and extra parts for something that doesn't add real function.
The Epson RD-1 had a winder; it was used to cock the shutter after each shot. Worked really well and made it look (and operate) exactly like a film camera. @@jgaffney567
Loved the real life test of the Auto Focus with the kids - exactly what I wanted to see and know. Up until now, the only system that I found up to snuff when trying to capture my kids running all over the place, has been Sony. Has the issue with missing the eye focus been fixed in productive cameras or firmware updates?
Great Jared, subtle mention about the back focus PROBLEM, which is in the field, a big deal. My Z9 firm 4.01 still jumps during a sequence to the back, or grabs on to bright white objects. Also has serious issues with vertical objects crossing the 3D focus path. This as been acknowledge by a famous Nikon Sports Ambassador as "... May have difficulty in trusting it ...". SO, you will get great pictures, but are they what you saw and wanted.
Do you think this issue is known by Nikon ? I saw a lot of people un acknowledge this issue, like it does not exist. In fact like you said, it’s a big issue, because you think you nailed it, but the evf does not show really the actual focus point. This happened to me a few times, nothing risky as it was not a paid job, but this should be like the number one priority at Nikon to fix this. This may be the only downside of Nikon right now. There have everything but the best AF.
No mention of face/eye detect with manual focus or the focus point IBIS? Strange. This camera will bring old MF lenses back into the mix and they should work well with the 24MP sensor. I think it makes total sense to come out with this now as they are able to leverage some existing technology to make a compelling camera (sensor, Expeed 7, etc) with some new features (pixel shift, IBIS etc). I can see them planning a 33MP stacked sensor in the Z6iii, or even a 20MP Z500, but want to let the Z8 play out first.
There is a latency problem between eye detection and setting the focus, which can be clearly seen in the video, for example. at 9:35. was the shutter release or focus priority set? we don't know. what we can see, the expeed 7 is fast enough for a very fast object detection (eye dection). What should Z6 or Z6 II user think of this camera? In terms of price, both are close together. Nikon itself did not have a conclusive answer at the Photopia in Hamburg (Germany). I think it's a camera straight from the marketing department, many people wanted the Z Fc in full format. It will probably sell well.
I sold my z50 and i choose z6-2 bnib, thats my core cam for 5-7years. Small advice from me for next zf: zf-2 later: 1.use f3 grip design, 2.This is street photo cam: use either one of these: tilt+flippy/ tilt/ 2way tilt/ tilt+flippy with second screen inside.
@@truthseeker6804 I just sold my d500 and upgraded to canon r6ii Yes the camera is better but try to take picture of swifts with busy background Then you realise that the technology is not there yet
Spec-wise this looks amazing. All I wanted out of the Z8 was at least 10 bit video with N-log, a fully articulating screen and slightly better auto focus at half the price of the Z9. As cool as Z8 is, 12 bit raw is overkill and 10-bit works just fine for many things without the hefty data cost/logistics. Having 4K60 probably would've been an instant buy but I definitely find myself hesitating on the retro styling. It's very cool and does look great, but I have gotten very used to the ergonomics and practicality of modern camera grips and could see it being very annoying after several hours of shooting. Looking forward to what the Z6iii/Z7iii might bring to the table
I love film my Nikon film camera without a grip and can imagie to switch to digital now. But why no F-Mount? I want to use my manual Nikon lenses with aperture ring on the Zf. And what about a digital microprism for focussung? I think nobody wants to use AF on a retro camera. For me AF takes the joy out of the process of taking a photo. Regards from Germany!
Actually I would love a fully stripped down digital retro as you described. You could literally put the fake film advance and just have that serve as a thumb rest or shutter reset or something fun like that. Remove the back LCD, just have very few buttons, great high megapixel full frame sensor, average AF. Literally build it retro, high quality build but remove a lot of the modern conveniences and save on cost. Personally that's all I really need for what I do. Something like the leica D cameras with no backscreen but include AF and an EVF. Very niche but would be very fun.
I’m about to jump from Nikon to canon to get better auto focus for wildlife photography. So, please keep us updated on the Z6III !! Fro, great work on most of the things you do! Keep it up!
Don’t do it, af isn’t everything and you will miss the image quality from Nikon, I switched to a canon r6 mark ii and r6 from Nikon z6II and z6, the image quality from Canons isn’t as good as Nikon, I’m a wedding and portrait photographer and as muchas I love Canon’s af the Nikons NEF are unrivaled
@@yovanimartinez2393you are talking about the RAW File and what you can get with it or the pure quality of the image ? You miss the NIKON AWB ? Is it not better on Canon Side ? For weeding with the Z6 you didn’t have some eyelashes focus instead of eyes ?
@@random_dev for weddings you mean? No the af isn’t as bad as the Fro and the northrups make it seem, yes canon’s and Sony’s eye af is better but these days you don’t get a bad camera and my Z6II af is competent enough to get the shot. And yes I was talking about the raw file and what I can get with it.
As a Z6ii owner I am more than annoyed that Nikon didn't come out with s/w upgrades to fulfill the promise of the twin expeed 6 processors: some working AF for moving subjects and better AF generally is long overdue. I can only think this came first, because the Z6iii will come with some other enhancements (be that a different sensor, viewfinder resolution(unlikely) or whatever and the Zf is an intermediate model.. Fantastic subjects by the way 🙂
Nikon please add film rewind sound to shutter sounds. add sound of FM2. add film emulations like B/W and more styles. and in future make its size like FM2!!!!!
This with the 40mm kit lens would be perfect for taking some photos on a holiday. Slow down, relax and just use a retro style camera. Sounds good to me (can't get my hands on a Fuji X100V for the life of me).
@@froknowsphoto Of course that would also be awesome, but if you want the cool factor or the feeling of a retro camera and still enjoy modern image quality then the Zf is the perfect mix of those things. I'm not saying that it makes a lot of logical sense, but it makes emotional sense.
If you’re complaining about the grip, you’re using the wrong lens for what this camera is. =) Simple as that (at least to me). The grip IS an ergonomic compromise, but one that the target audience is probably willing to make (I have a Sony A7C - I should know).
Nikon seems to agree having chosen to make the kit lens the pancake’ish 40mm f/2. To me it’s more cute than cool. The ergonomics are super important for me personally. I won’t be disappointed if it’s a hit. Photography is in a weird state where absolutely everyone I know is constantly taking photos. Yet so few people ever use a dedicated camera. Sometimes marketing is more important than practicality?
@@adamaufdencamp5080That could definitely be the case. Heck, I sometimes seek out the OPPOSITE of practicality, e.g. when I shoot a 70’s film SLR. Even though I love well designed equipment that gets out of the way and just lets you get your work done.
I would absolutely love to have a full frame digital camera that has only manual mode but DOES have autofucus. I don't need any other bells and whistles that would manipulate the image outside of shutter sheet, f stop and aperture. I used to shoot with a Mamiya 6 and if I could find a camera that looked and felt like that but was digital I would be so happy. I also would love it if it had an old school split prism manual focus manual focus. If anyone has any recommendations please let me know!
I have a Nikon Zfc...why? Because it reminds me of my first Nikon F and Nikorrmat FTN bodies. I shot semi-professionally and sold camera gear right out of High School in 1974. I just came back from Southern Utah with both my Nikon Z6 and Zfc, and really used the Zfc manually most of the time, along with my 70-200mm f2.8. Loved the extra distance with the crop sensor with the 70-200, and am torn whether or not to replace my Zfc with the Zf. I do plan on getting the 180-600 new Z-mount lens when I can get my hands on one. I guess I'll need to talk myself out of this after buying the 180-600.
Kindly guide me as i am confused between the two Fujifilm X-T5 & Nikon ZF..!! I shoot students in school in outdoor sports, indoor class activities, low light stage performances. Which is the best camera for me out of the two and why you do you think so..??
I always appreciate the reviews, and thank you! That said, this camera to me is a perfect 10! I'm actually sitting here contemplating purchasing a 2nd one. I'm a full-time pro, and have always been a Nikon shooter, for over 20 years, and when I was a teenager. I've been through most the digital models, and I have no real complaints over this work of art. I'm all for technology! But, honestly, we've been spoiled, most the features we have now, are so unnecessary! Most competent photographers could get high-end results from a Nikon D70, it's mostly about the photographers abilities not the camera. The FM2 had no features, a basic, beautiful 35mm film camera. They probably released the ZF first (over Z6iii), to see what people would complain about, so they could tweak the Z6iii appropriately. I say to everyone, just enjoy this masterpiece, I just purchased mine while on vacation in NY from B&H, had a few days to work it out, it's amazing. If you come from the FM2 days, you'll so appreciate the ZF! Excellent job Nikon!! It really is awesome!! Don't change anything (a battery grip would be nice)!!
Can the Nikon Zf camera with the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 lens and a 2x teleconverter be a great setup for all-around use and moderate wildlife photography as well? Can this setup be the best of both worlds? I would love to hear your expert opinion, and it would be great to see a review of this setup on your channel as well.
I agree with the reviewer. If I’m going to spend $2000 for a camera body, it’s not this form factor. For the street photographer, the phone is becoming more and more a competitor even if it loses out on optics. I’m still looking for a sub $1200 camera that is smaller, potentially has a fixed pancake-like lens and a first class autofocus system that can be used for creative filmmaking and street documentaries. A 35mm sensor is more than fine.
When things began going digital I wished that Nikon just took the FM2 body and swapped the film area out for a digital sensor. Of course at that time I worked with totally manual cameras - the FM/FM2 series. And I was veery happy with those cameras.
It’s still the 2nd best low light sensor in the world though, according to phontos to photos, 2nd only to D5/D6 that make major trades in low iso performance
Why should they change something what works? That sensor is a beast especially in low light. Also works very well with adapted vintage lenses wich I use a lot on my z6.
“I’m experiencing a problem with my Nikon Zf where the image on the LCD screen appears choppy or laggy, almost like it’s displaying at a low frame rate. This happens in manual mode with settings like 1/200 or 1/160, f/2.8, and ISO 1000-1600, both with and without a flash. The final photos come out fine, but the live view on the LCD is not smooth. I’ve checked the firmware, and it’s up to date. Does anyone know how to fix this?”
I'm exactly the audience for this camera..i have several FMs and shoot film still regularly. Got a X100v for the looks (camera and pictures) but am missing my old glass, eg the 50:1.2...
I don't want retro per se; I just want external dials for aperture, shutter AND ISO. I don't want an unnecessary PSAM dial with that. Full frame is better than APS-C, since I don't shoot straight to JPeg, and really push the images in edit ...I shoot raw. ;)
🎉 I am so excited about this camera I'm an old guy and I used to shoot the FE all the time so this fits right it my love of old cameras. Jared yes screwed up you didn't use all the features that this camera has the ability to shoot the old Nikon lenses app the iris through this camera is out of this world take a better look at it.
Dear Mr. Firstly, you have an easy way to convey the information. Is it possible for you to make a vid for beginners on how to operate the Nikon ZF camera, as well as the settings and organization of menus? Many thanks and respect to you.
Hi, just a quick question in between: How good do you think the Eye AF (for stills) of these cameras is in comparison??? >> Nikon Zf Nikon Z7 II (with LATEST firmware) Sony A7R III (with LATEST firmware) Thanks!
I'm excited about what this portends for Z7iii and Z6iii. Seeing the Expeed 7 processor in a $2k body is fantastic. And, yeah, I think they're going to draw a lot of Fujifilm hipsters over to the Nikon Z ecosystem with this.
Hello mate , i want a buy a new camera and the choise is hard .. Sony a7iv or Nikon zf ? I use for street pics for 70% and other 30% landscape and portrait Thx
The Z6iii is going to be another camera that is better than the competition for less money “again” . Like the Z9 Z8 and this camera. It’ll be the beast of the $2500 cameras.
Dont forget..USA price only ..outside USA price are 40% more . In Norway this camera is 2800 dolars..Z8 almost 4700 dolars .It is so sad that Nikon and other companies treat Europe as this.Phones the same 😢😢
I love my Nikon Zfc. I have a Sony A7R V for serious stuff but my Nikon Zfc with the 28mm f2.8 ( 42mm 35mm eqv ) is great fun. I agree, no need for a full frame at 1000 pounds more and its not worth it. Poor Autofocus and nothing special can be justified when the fun camera is 1000 pounds less and weighs less - having something built like a tank around your neck isn't fun for long.
Pretty cool, and I'm glad they put expeed 7 in it instead of trying to repackage an old Z6ii to capitalize on the retro trend. I agree though, why release this before focusing on a Z6III?
Because the Z6III will be close to this price and cannibalize sales. If the released a ZF with an old sensor after they released a Z6III with a new sensor it would not sell as well. Product pipeline. I think the Z6III is right around the corner.
@@BenjaminSandness I agree - I also think the Z6III will have a massive improvement in the video area. They need to compete with Sony and Canon in this camera tier on the video area. It is very behind. It doesn't need to be a video camera - but needs some better native recording functions which the newer processor will help with. I shoot mainly stills but more and more clients are asking for video as well. Would be nice to just have one camera - I am on the verge of just going z8 currently. But the Z6ii is a great sweet spot.
Nikon is going to sell a lot of these. If Fuji can get $2K from people for an APS-C retro styled body this is a no brainer for Nikon. Especially with the improved AF, articulating screen and dual card slots. In competent hands, this camera can be a workhorse for sure.
@@dinkobilic9078 Matt Granger just posted sample RAW files anyone can dload and they open just fine in PS and Capture One.
My only con is the lack of aperture rings on Z lenses, but that didn't keep me from preordering the green moss 😍
@@stra998 You should probably stick to your phone camera.
This looks awesome. Why does canon have to make their cameras look like they were designed by the same guy who designed the 1997 Ford Taurus...
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Because canon knows since 1970 that camera design is all about egronomics 😮
Lol. Canon definitely make the least cool looking cameras.
I would use this for street. Not so much with a 70-200. That's where the grip issue comes in with a huge lens like this.
Exactly my point! Why would you use a camera like this with a lens like that… today? Use it with the 40mm, i'm sure it will be fine.
Small lens ... with an aperture ring
If you just want something for the street, buy an old film camera, a nifty 50 or 35/1.4 and go forth.
there is an optional grip
Yup. This body with the 40, 28SE or the 26mm pancake would be a great street combo and what it's geared towards.
I hope they use a stack sensor. Nikon AF needs all the help it can get. The next year we are going to have new cameras from canon.
Dude Im hyped as fxxk for Z7iii too, give us dual Ex7 and new sensor Nowwwwwwwwww
z6 iii isn't confirmed though no?
Z6iii should have come first for sure.
@@cottonbomb8272 Will you take better photographs when you have one? Some of history's greatest and most memorable and famous photographs were shot on film with manual everything. I can't help feeling that if you get carried off on the AF/FPS/MP tech wave you're missing something about the art.
I like this simply because I started my career as a commercial photographer using a Nikon F.
This gonna sell damn well. Nikon is killing it lately. Z8 and Z9 are outstanding and now. Well done Nikon.
Only five years behind the marketplace. That happens when you fire your employees en masse.
They aren't that far behind anymore.@@unclefart5527
@@unclefart5527 really? compared to shitty crop sensor fujis? lol.
@@MobiusCoin I dunno what to tell you my man, my nikon zf is pretty small and the lenses for it are also pretty small.
Now I know it’s an awesome camera 😂 thank you
You noticed it as well
@@VIDEOVISTAVIEW2020 Sure did, actually he’s known for hating on Nikon. Besides being quite arrogant and not funny. He does understand gear but he’s biased. The Zf is awesome. Engraved dails, brass, a modern time FM2. This will be a success.
@@seanpalermo7080Speaking as a retro camera hater, I agree. It should sell well. But I wish it was like a Z6, but with Z8 style top controls.
He used to be a Nikon guy if you back 10 years, but now hes a spec sheet reader with no artistic qualities
He has the same feelings for Fujifilm. So much so that he's no longer reviewing or even including them in his videos.
“Low footprint crowd”😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@dakotaxu4792 There are a lot of people that care a lot about the size of their cameras. I'm not exactly one of them, but there's a market for this.
I think the grip is fine if you're using it with a small prime or zoom lens.. like the Lecia Q and Sony Rx1 etc.. they dont have good grip too.. but if the whole package is small enough.. it's kinda alright.
Yes, it's nice being able to keep it compact and add a grip if you're using bigger lenses. This is better.
I just hope Lightroom supports the camera files!
looks like the perfect second body / vacation camera for me.
I would love a hasselblad style Nikon camera in a smaller form factor. A futuristic and clean touch👌
I hope a Z80/90 is in the line. They really need a top line APSC.
@@OnlyCitrus Nice names 😎👌
@@OnlyCitrus I'd like a new APSC sensor too. Pretty happy with the Z6/7 ones.
Great addition to the lineup. This can appeal to people who like the feel of a Fuji but want full frame.
Feel of a mirrorless Nikon Df maybe? :)
Nikon ZF Silver version is for PRO PHOTOGRAPHERS, Nikon ZF black is for OLD Photographers🥰
Nikon has cracked it with this..Big time.
Nikon has the best picture quality and battery life ❤💚
The normal level of snarkiness from the JP - no this vid was a we bit more optimistic.
Hey bud. congrats on your new place. Zf looks exciting.
Bam!!! Just got my Zf ❤️❤️❤️
I would like to see a stabilisation comparison between ZF and G9 II.
Good morning from Romania Jared! Have a good day !
I really wish they’d come out with the other colors. I’d buy a silver one now.
Yes
There's 7 colours including black in australia
I have my eye on the blue one
Other colors are available on the Nikon site.
I can see people lining up to pre order this. Finally something worth buying from Nikon.
Great review Jared, love the photos you got!
I use my Nikon z fc a lot for video calls. I realize that having dials is a retro thing, but it sure is nice to be able to reach out and adjust ISO without repositioning myself.
Why are u adjusting iso on a video call?
I love the new Nikon Zf full frame camera 📸😍😍😍
OMG, it cramps his poor little hands!! Glad to report I've had no hand cramps, nor did I for two decades carrying an FM and FM 2. Also, one of my friends just bought one as well. She is a very well known photographer in the US. We just got back from a trip where we carried then pretty much everywhere for two weeks. If you want, I can ask a 60 year old petite woman to tell you how to make your poor little hands not cramp. Pretty easy to tell who never spent a day carrying a Mamiya RB 67. 😆
should have used widdle for little lol
Leica basically did that with the M10-D.
@@Kevon420That winder idea is utterly ridiculous....the retro is for function, a digital camera has no need for a winder
The Epson RD-1 had a winder; it was used to cock the shutter after each shot. Worked really well and made it look (and operate) exactly like a film camera. @@jgaffney567
Perfekt Kamera for me. Style is everything since every camera is quite good nowadays
I can't see what the issue is with the retro... I am waiting a small, light and cheap camera for street (Z50 II or Z30 with viewfinder)
Big thumbs up for Nikon.
All brands are great. But just want a cheap/fair rental and try camera body/lens service to confirm.
If the Z6/Z7 III Can match the AF system of the D500/D850 I will be ecstatic,
If it is going to be Z9 like, then it will blow them away.
And when is that?
D500 is your benchmark? You have to update yourself to modern autofocus systems
@@truthseeker6804 the stability of the flagship dslr af is way better than those on mirrorless camera
@@truthseeker6804 I just sold my d500 and upgraded to canon r6ii
Yes the camera is better but try to take picture of swifts with busy background
Then you realise that the technology is not there yet
Keep it up!
same, have the z6ii and canon is the best. thinking of switching
Z8? No? Too expensive? Think of all the money you loose selling your gear (objectives) on the used market.
Fantastic subjects by the way 🙂
I still have a D750 and miss my old FM2. Maybe it's for me.
Question the Z9 doesn't have a mechanical shutter if I'm right? So what about rolling shutter like you showed now with the ZF?
Nikon please add film rewind sound to shutter sounds. add sound of FM2. add film emulations like B/W and more styles. and in future make its size like FM2!!!!!
This with the 40mm kit lens would be perfect for taking some photos on a holiday. Slow down, relax and just use a retro style camera. Sounds good to me (can't get my hands on a Fuji X100V for the life of me).
So the 40mm wouldn’t be perfect on someone’s z6,z7,z8 or 9?
What is the Atomos product you are using for your video capture (viewfinder I assume)?
I'm the guy that had the Z FC that immediately upgraded to the Z F. This thing is going to sell like crazy
Jared @ 1:05 " Please dont KILL two birds with one stone rather , feed two birds with one meal.
Nikon still recycling the 24mp sensor from the Sony A7iii. It was a good sensor for early 2018.
@@pauka13 worked wonders with 180 AF-D aswell in the d780! Had to sell of the lens tho bc af wasnt fast enough for my needs :(
Nikon claims that the 24.5 MP sensor in the Zf is a new design.
Ye same as the new iphone xD
Full frame is better than APS-C, since I don't shoot straight to JPeg, and really push the images in edit ...I shoot raw. ;)
Already seeing a bunch of ZfC cameras on the used market today, is I think they may be right about that.
Releasing the Zf before the Z6iii is marketing and business genius!!
@JaredPolin dude….you still rock that Atmos ninja Star recorder? Got one sittin on my shelf in puuurfect working order. Sturdy pice of gear
Hi, just a quick question in between:
How good do you think the Eye AF (for stills) of these cameras is in comparison??? >>
Nikon Zf
Nikon Z7 II (with LATEST firmware)
Sony A7R III (with LATEST firmware)
Thanks!
I'm excited about what this portends for Z7iii and Z6iii. Seeing the Expeed 7 processor in a $2k body is fantastic. And, yeah, I think they're going to draw a lot of Fujifilm hipsters over to the Nikon Z ecosystem with this.
What is that "thing" you have mounted on your camera in the beginning images?
Hello mate , i want a buy a new camera and the choise is hard .. Sony a7iv or Nikon zf ? I use for street pics for 70% and other 30% landscape and portrait
Thx
Cool camera but my favorite part of the video starts at 9:17 and ends quickly after. Thanks Fro! Your work is priceless
Hello! I have a question. can this camera record 4k 60 externally? For redundancy atomos ninja v?
Pretty cool, and I'm glad they put expeed 7 in it instead of trying to repackage an old Z6ii to capitalize on the retro trend. I agree though, why release this before focusing on a Z6III?
Because the Z6III will be close to this price and cannibalize sales. If the released a ZF with an old sensor after they released a Z6III with a new sensor it would not sell as well. Product pipeline. I think the Z6III is right around the corner.
I suspect the Z6III may move to a bit higher resolution or faster sensor to differentiate itself, but probably the same processor and AF.
Jared, I want to shoot good stills, what Nikon Z camera should I buy?
70-200 with this camera….Interesting choice
