The 16mm f1.8 is absolutely sensational for the price. For a person like me who doesn't shoot wide very often it's hard to justify spending any more to get marginal improvements. Highly recommended. They're doing a great job.
Just got the 16mm Viltrox after drowning a Sony 14mm F1.8 and not willing to risk that sort of money again. The 16mm Viltrox is superb for the money and while slightly longer than the 14mm can also use a filter which the 14mm can't. Win win in my book

I have the Viltrox 16mm f/1.8, and it's pretty good, but a bit slow. I also have the Samyang 14mm f/2.8, which is much faster and has excellent geometry.
I have the Sony 85/1.8 and it's amazing, one of my favorite lenses. It's also 100g lighter than the Viltrox (not all of us are as young or have big guns like Fro) and uses 67mm filters. And a custom button and af switch. Usually on-sale for 549, seems like a reasonable "upgrade" for our $2500-6500 cameras.
I have the Viltrox 85mm F1.8 STM for the Canon RF mount on my R8, and I am very happy with it. I even ordered that lens before I got my R8 because I knew that they were not producing it any more, but one online shop here still had a few on stock back then, for about 320 Swiss Francs/$350. I was even able to get a firmware update from Rollei, Germany, which could be easily installed because the lens has a USB C port to connect it to your computer (no additional hardware needed).
I also just bought the Viltrox 20mm 2.8 z mount for only $158 and love it!. Looking forward to more z mount lens from them. These are the best lens for value.
I'm really glad that you had so many shots at the basketball court as I've used mine for a few sessions in the same lighting and was wondering if the color was just that way or if it was inherent to the lens or my editing. This lens is one of my favorites for sure, good to see it holds it's own
I've been using this on a Nikon Z5 for 5 or 6 months now and it's been amazing. AF is not lightning fast, but that may very well be a Z5 showing it's age, but portraits are amazing from 1.8, and if you want fine detail on something 2.8 is more than enough to get it much sharper. The Nikon Z alternative was about double the price, but I don't think it's double the performance.
I got the first version of this lens a few years ago. It works great for portraits. It is hard to justify spending more for an F1.4 when this one gets the job done.
I saw the Globe trotters years ago when Meadowlark Lemon and Curly Neal were playing, they were great then and by the way Wilt Chamberlain played for them as well
You should try their 16mm 1.8 from their pro line that thing is great one of the best surprises I have had. Focus never misses, images are very sharp and it has all the function buttons
I’ve been using the original canon RF mount version of the lens for a couple of years and I love it. Handles well, images have a lot of character. Great value. Not sure how the mark II differs. Hopefully will be back on the market soon for Canon RF.
I absolutely love my Viltrox AF 16mm F1.8. So far have been really impressed across the board. Has a few extra bells and whistles including lcd screen and 2 programable function buttons. Definitely worth checking out if you're in need of a ultrawide.
I have used this lens (along with 35mm f1.8 viltrox) yesterday on the dance floor. It is really, really good (on Z6II), my camera was basically seeing in the dark! (AF-C wide box with eye detect). Amazing lenses really
I have this lens for about a couple of years. Used on my Sony 6400 and then 6700. The protrait shots from distance is excellent as I shot mostly in f1.8. For the price, it is definitely worth it.
I've bought a Sony 85mm f/1.8 for ~US$330 and they work just fine. Viltrox isn't going to sell too many copies of this. Their 16mm amd 28mm for full frame and 13, 27, 75mm for APS-C are a different story.
The cheap Sony 85mm f/1.8 has a mediocre (harsh) bokeh though, as probably typical for lenses which are designed to be cheap but sharp. The Viltrox might possibly have a higher-quality bokeh? the +5 mm larger filter thread indicates a larger front element, and it has 10 lens elements (one more than Sony's 9). Also, the Viltrox has surely been designed with Sony's 85mm 1.8 as the competing offer in mind, i.e. Viltrox likely was determined to release theirs only under the condition that it is optically better than the Sony (thinking not just about sharpness, but also about bokeh rendering quality).
honestly, with the quality of glass of the latest Viltrox lenses, it should be considered a 2nd party... the 13mm f1.4 for fuji and the 16mm F1.8 for Sony are stunning lenses!
I purchased this lens for the Nikon Z system and it worked well on my Z9. I recently purchased the Zf and put this lens on the camera and it wouldn't autofocus on either the Zf or the Z9. I was puzzled and wonder if the most recent firmware updates for the Z9 bricked the lens. I also just purchased the Viltrox 20 mm f2.8 but have yet to use it and am wondering if I should return it if it won't autofocus.
That's a great review! Do you know how does it compare to the (newish, I guess?) 7Artisans 85mm 1.8? That one also seems quite interesting, and it's even cheaper.
I am one of the fortunate ones that snagged the Canon RF version before they were banned, and I absolutely love it. I got a bad copy the first time, that had this terrible crosshatching effect, everywhere but the center, so I knew something was wrong with it. I returned it and got a second one, and it has been fantastic for both photos and video. I'd love to get a second one for my work camera, but if you can even find a used RF version, they're over $600 now. Anyway, your glowing review will make them even more expensive now. Thanks a lot! 😂
I was lucky to snag a RF 85mm for my Canon RP before they pulled them. It works really well for a hobbyist / takes pretty solid photos. I assume it works very similar on Sony.
Hi Jared, I just bought a used Viltrox 85mm. Do you remember if you heard and internal noise when flipping upside down? Mine does it even when mounted on my powered up a7riii.
Its really an outstanding lens considering the price and the specs. It works really well with my Z6II. But I am not comfortable using it with my z9. The mount of the lens i have is a little tight and do not unmount easily from the z9. So every time i unmount it from my z9 I have near heart attacks. Probably it is the problem of the particular lens. Otherwise it is a really good lens.
I watch all your videos, your info and presentation is great! How about testing the TTartisen 500mm lense? Most of your audience is probably like me: amateur with a good camera trying to get the best lenses without mortgaging the house.
calling it 4th party is absurd... its just as 3rd party as Tamron & Sigma. Their 27mm and 75mm 1.2's, the 13mm 1.4 (i know all for APS-C, but who cares) are right up there with the big players. They dont deserve to be called 4th party. The build quality, especially their pro line, is really right up there. 3 weeks ago i took the 75mm 1.2 on a portrait shoot in pretty strong rain, and it took it like a champ.

Also the viltrox is frankly sharper and 200 less expensive than the sony 85 f1.8. There is no reason to buy the sony 1.8 anymore there are a lot of reasons not to. At 600 new you can save a lot and get the viltrox new for 400, or save 50 and get the samyang f1.4 for 550 (I think). The first couple years, I'd remove a lens from its box, and immediately throw it over my shoulder... never to be seen again. Years later, during some move, I would find it and be like..... "OMG, have I missed you, my precious!"
The problems I see with these "4th party lenses" are excessive grease all over it. I can see grease marks on this too which is a shame.. I'd be concerned about contaminating my sensor behind this.
