  • Today I'm sharing with you an interesting account of a duel as reported in an Austrian army newspaper (Danzer's Armee-Zeitung, 28 Oct 1909) that happened in Budapest between a civilian and a hussar officer.

I'm a real nerd for the Austro-Hungarian empire. I'm always fascinated about their society and how the war changed it.

Amazing. Duel history and culture interest me a lot since, after all, is the root of our art. Please, do share with us more duel stories like this!

Very cool story; my dissertation was on dueling in America, so my research focused more on firearms than swords, but I always love a good duel tale

Nice to see you back! Also, it is an interesting story to listen with a mug of beer (as I did). But was this duel legal? I thought that duels have already been forbidden in all European countries for this moment

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video!
      Yes, you are right.
Criminal Law had outlawed duelling decades and decades earlier and even the military code of 1855 had. However, the duel was still mostly deemed an appropriate way of dealing with affairs of honour among the military, even though it became more and more regulated. Several regulations were put in place around the turn of the century in an attempt to contain the "excesses", a layered term by itself. The main mechanism at work were the so-called honour courts, and later the so-called honour proceedings, basically a commission of officers dealing with a given affair.
Given that the duel between B. J. and Fränkel here took place the day after the insult, it could very well have taken place without the knowledge of the regiment or any kind of honour commission, which seems quite rare for the time it happened - also given the relative severity of the outcome. By the way, duels between officers and civilians were also different to affairs among officers where the military was mostly able to exert full control on what happened next.
      Cheers!

Nice, if you are interested in duels, check and read Boziewicz's code of honor. In Poland, despite the bans, it is estimated that about 500 duels a year took place in the Second Polish Republic.

I don't know if BJ is the most fortunate alias. :oP
Dueling culture was kind of wild in Europe there, for a while. I have a pitted and bent but wonderful 17th century dueling rapier. At the time psychos with combat experience would during peace time get bored and go around looking for trouble. From my understanding, a not uncommon occurrence would be a conversation like this:
Him: "Sir, I heard you've insulted my mother! I demand a duel!"
The other guy: "I've never even met your mother! In fact, I don't even know who you are!"
Him: "A-HA! So you are calling me a liar! I will have justice! I challenge you to a duel!"
