Super Mario Bros 2 wasn't a dream. Yes, the game ends with Mario dreaming the whole adventure. But, if you read the opening, it says that he dreamed it up, then when to the place where his dream said it would be, and found it there in the condition it was at the beginning. So, it is hard to say if it was the true version or not, but I think it was just to emphasize that it came from a dream.
