After watching this, landing and taking off in the MiG 21 is probably the most dangerous thing to do in life.

    Cap,
About the general flight operations of the fishbed:
Engine management is something pretty important and should be considered when flying here. You must have understood by now that that engine could easily be overstressed and requires engine management which becomes second nature once you are experienced. The fishbed cannot fly in afterburner for a long time and by a long time I mean a few minutes. During the takeoff procedure, I recommend having a 10-15 degrees afterburner climb until you reach 600 meters agl, 600kmph ias and gears are closed before you switch it to mil power. This is because too much of a steep climb will not help with the ias, so it is best to maintain an optimal climb to get an optimal altitude and speed to switch off afterburner as soon as possible. If you stress the engine too much, you will get an orange warning light on the top warning light on the warning panel left to the left of the engine temp gauge. You will also hear some beeping noises telling you to come off afterburner. These only happen after take off. The whole start up procedure should be completed in one minute.
When flying, it must be ensured that the fishbed only flies on mil power unless you are in turning combat (positive Gs in combat help the engine survive longer for some reason). About having positive Gs. Feel free to yank your stick with an IAS more than approximately 700 kmph because she will not enter a high aoa. She will only enter high aoa at lower speeds, so try to keep her at that speed most of the time. Mil power is quite powerful in her, and you can sometimes reach mach 1 just with mil power. I would recommend binding the max afterburner on/off switch to your hotas so that you can switch between afterburner and full mil power with a flick of a switch (pretty effective for lazy pilots and beginners).
When landing, try not to have a shallow glideslope like you did in that video. Have a 3-5 degree glideslope like every other plane. Try not to flare too much, have between 5-10 degrees aoa (not more) during touch down. To do this, have a glideslope such that you have the runway threshold within pipper diameter glass or the center of the fixed net on the end of the runway (in a steep descent). When you flare, you should have the end of the runway within the pipper diameter glass just as you touch down. Too much flaring will destroy your rear wheel tires. Maintain 350-400 kmph at stage 1 (with intermediate flaps) and 300-350 kmph with full flaps and touching at about 320 kmph. The Fishbed is arguably the most difficult jet to land in dcs because it requires a high touch down speed and more of perfect everything because it is easy to damage the gears, especially during touch down (like you did in your tutorial where you damaged the right gear).
I already pinged you on discord about it and I am doing it again. Have a nice day

What do you mean by too much flaring will destroy the rear tyres? When you flare you are still in the air. Or you mean rolling with the nose up will destroy the tyres?

  • @MrTheDridge

Great job lads. Remember that the MiG-21 uses blown flaps on landing and which is why you don't want to lower engine power too much until touchdown or you will lose a good portion of your lift, so sitting around 80% engine speed is usually good for your approach. That combined with the general behavior of the Delta wing at low speeds and high AoA make this a plane that you fly down to the runway. This is one of my favorite birds to play around with, but if I haven't flown it in a while I have to re-teach myself how to land the damned thing.

Hey cap, good job for the first time!
One thing you could correct with yt notifications is that you lower your gear again when you say it is neutral and after a cut it is neutral.
For the learning folk this could be missleading. Oh and dont forget to always return the gear leaver to neutral (after gear up and down) to not waste your breaking pressure :)

idk if its just me, but its actually very hard to control imo, when im pulling half of my joystick backward the AoA goes over 30degrees and become very unstable.. and btw there r no G-limiter ? because if i pull the max of the joystick i litteraly break the wings.. so its kinda hard to deal with the AoA, and g during a dogfight because u cant pull too much.. I mean it feel rlly hard to control compared to other delta wing aircraft as the M-2000

Great vid, if I may add, it's a bit trickier taking off with combat load(pull up gently at, say, 300-320 IAS) If you could make a video about how NOT to stall the engine in flight, that would be superb:D

    • @robertcurtis1191

The way you don't stall the engine in flight is to go to settings, special, mig 21 and click simplified engine management.
