    This is my transcription of Oscar Peterson's blazing over his "Boogie Blues Etude"! From the legendary 1974 Trio performance at Ronnie Scott's Club. Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on bass and Barney Kessel on guitar. Today's sheet music trivia (first to answer correctly gets PDF): name the "course/map/level" which shows up in this transcription video.

      Don't we all
      Thankfully if you have money there's a workaround...custom built pianos with slightly smaller keys. I'm not talking toy keys I'm talking slightly smaller which enables people to reach 10ths in the same way they could reach a 9th.
      For some reason they have not been mass produced in stores which is sad (probably because they think they won't sell)
      I'm trying to add links to resources about this but they keep getting deleted for some reason

    Those left hand tenths are to die for. In his autobiography, A Jazz Odyssey, Oscar talks about how he spent 'countless' hours practing those left hand patterns. Thing is, he was already an accomplished pianist before starting that persuit. That endeavor was triggered when, at one particular gig, after Peterson went on a departure and decided to play a few tunes solo, Ray Brown made a comment to him about his playing, suggesting that his solo chops needed work if it was going to come off as competent. We're seeing the results here.

      I remember him talking about when Carnegie Hall first asked him to give a solo concert, still in his early days like 1949, he asked if his drummer and bassist could join in since he was so used to the trio format and he didn't know if he could do a solo set, and they compromised by only having Ray Brown playing behind him on bass. So evidently he'd been sensitive about it. But man did he work that out like you're saying. His solo work ended up pretty incredible and later on his left hand could keep right up with his right. It's inspiring that he kept growing as an artist even after he became famous. Gives some hope to mere mortals like us.

      @@cademosley4886 That's interesting. Never knew that side of the story; things definitely make sense with that bit of added information. And yeah, I used to fall into the trap of trying to transcribe and then play technically difficult stuff of the giants, not considering that, that music represented a time when they were were well into their careers, sometimes with a few decades under their belts of post success honing of their already great chops... I learned lessons quickly 😬

      Just curious, is something left hand 10ths something most people can’t do? I have a lot of friends with small hands so I just thought that my friends are just smaller

    • @TinyMaths
      @TinyMaths Год назад

      @@seansrcrazy9758 I assume it mainly depends on hand size, and also the size of the actual tenth because they vary in size. For example, C with a minor third raised an octave isn't too bad (if you're able to reach further than an octave); same with E and B, but those with a major third raised an octave are apparently sketchy for a lot of people and out of reach for many. Eb, Bb, Db, and Ab seem to be the most out of reach ones (notice that for those tenths the outermost finger's going to be on black keys, but the thumb will be on white keys and I think that's what makes those major tenths difficult). But over the years I have heard quite a few people say they can't reach a tenth at all. And the crazy thing is, there are players out there with a big stretch that can add notes inbetween the outer, like Oscar himself. The mind boggles 😧
