- A series of apparently unrelated New York City murders are being committed by a killer dubbed “The Hydra” by the press. Co-Starring E.G. Marshall, Skye Aubrey, Coleen Gray, Morgan Sterne, Bill Zuckert, Bob Hastings, Than Wyenn, Pat Delaney. Teleplay by Ted Leighton (alias Richard Levinson and William Link), based on the novel "Cat Of Many Tails" by Ellery Queen (pseudonym for Frederic Dannay and Manfred Lee), directed by Barry Shear. Some on-location filming in New York City.
"Ted Leighton" was a pseudonym for Richard Levinson and William Link, creator of Columbo and Murder She Wrote. They wrote the original adaptation of Ellery Queen's book as they were both big fans of mystery writers. But it was rewritten and even changed Inspector Queen from father to uncle to allow the older Lawford to play Ellery. They insisted on not using their real names, they were disgusted with the changes. Four years later they tried again with Jim Hutton and David Wayne, much better, although it only lasted 25 episodes.
In my opinion, it should have lasted longer. It was a very well written and well acted series. Jim Hutton was great as Ellery and David Wayne never disappoints.
@@estang1030 I agree, it's one of my favorites. About a decade ago they released the series on DVD, it's one of my most re-watched sets (aside from Columbo, of course). I watch it not only because I'm a fan of the original novels, but also the setting during the golden age of radio. In fact, Ellery Queen was a radio show for 10 years in the 1940s and 50s before transitioning to television. There were several movies in the 1940s as well, some of which are here on RUclips.
Wasn't there an episode of _Ellery Queen_ like that? "The Adventure of the Sinister Scenario." Seems like they were indulging in a little wish fulfillment.
I didn't like the script change to uncle/ nephew. It generated too much cognitive dissonance resulting in me not favoring a favorite character. (I didn't think Lawford looked too old to be Harry's son.)
All they needed to do was color all Peter Lawford's hair a darker color so he looked young enough to be Harry Morgan's son.
If they did not have anything that would dye Lawford's mutton chops, he could have just shaved them off while shooting. (Never like that two-tone look favored by so many men; looks ridiculous; imho.)
@@jb888888888That’s the only episode of Jim Hutton’s you can find in full here on RUclips. 😂 Weird, I just watched it yesterday.
I was a child-into-teen in the 60s-70s and I can't help but feel nostalgic over TV movies like these, no matter how good or bad they might be. They give me a comforting feeling.
Ok even I have to admit that this one is no forgotten gem! I guess they can't all be Emmy winners! 😄
Marvellous Stefanie Powers. ❤
Can you imagine NYC making such a big issue over one killer? As if the city was safe before he came along!
Wow!!! I used to read these!! Fond memories!!
Only watching for Stefanie Powers
That's a long set of opening titles
This was a pilot intended for Universal's new "wheel" series, "The NBC Mystery Movie", but was passed over in favor of "McMillan & Wife".
I loved the NBC wheel when I was 11 in 1971. Only two channels to watch made these special.favourite was and is Columbo
Thank god
One of my favorite episodes! My family recalls several of its one-liners even to this day. Classic!
Thank you very much for posting 😊
Any time!
much preferred Jim Hutton as Queen, Lawford's wig looks ridiculous
Ellery queen Will always be my old time detective crime series I've been watching it since my younger years back home 🏡 ❤️ thanks for xharing it on yt 😀 😊 ❤️ 😄 🙂 😅😅😅
no love for philo vance or nick and nora charles? dick tracy, the shadow, rocky king, martin kane, eddie drake, mr and mrs north, micheal shayne? nero wolfe??
The animated snake gives me the shudders!
Oddly enough, I didn't remember this one & it's strange to me seeing Peter Lawford as Ellery instead of Jim Hutton.
😂 When they're buying the hotdogs, pretzels and chestnuts, everything is the same price, which is one coin! 😂
They must've done a "take 150" as when she needs to eat some of the food she has just bought, she eats couple of pretzel nanoparticles, and that's it!😅
I was going to say the same thing. All of that for ten cents or a quarter. Come on we're talking about new york.
Wonderful! The 70s was an Aladdin’s cave of excellent TV movie’s!

Okay, cheesy, but it’s a delight to see Harry Morgan. Earlier Harry roles- “Inherit The Wind” and “High Noon.” And ‘70’s notwithstanding, the writing isn’t bad. Sorry about network politics. The more things change…
I agree with the majority. Harry is the only redeeming part
Jim Hutton version was far better than Peter Lawford's .
Sadly, this version was pretty flat. Harry Morgan makes a great Inspector Queen, though. I agree with many that casting Lawford as Ellery was rather bizarre. Thanks for sharing this.
This is crazy Lawford is too old for this part.
" I'll be wearing a leather patch coat, and a 'No Smog!' button" ... oh my God, we were hilarious in the early 70's 🤣
Please don't take the Lord's name in vain.
This movie is getting trolled, but it's really good.
Has similar suspense like The night stalker movie 🤠🦅⭐👍
And music too.
Peter lawford is not an actor that i would imagine as elery queen and his hair style is hideous. I like Harry morgan, tho.
Excellent thank you
You are very welcome.

sfinthecity -Do you have The Jim Hutton Ellery Queen series complete with the opening tags?
I don't have it.
@@sfinthecity I Love your channel. So many rare Tv series from the 70's and 80's.Another rare series to see if you have _"Kaz" It was a lawyer show back in the late 1970's.Only ran for one season despite being well-written.
The entire series is unfound but another contributor has 11 episodes: www.youtube.com/@Spiritgumm/search?query=kaz
Try Daily Motion. It looks as though quite a few of the episodes are posted over there, but I'm not sure whether it's more than 11.
never understood their big surprise at having 2 25yr old victims when earlier 2 other murder vics are 29 when ellery gives break down of the connections. sure it's the whole point of plot with 2 vics being born same day and all, but their amazement at their both being 25 at first is ridiculous given what is given earlier. unless it was a flubbed line and was supposed to be 29, 28 but editting missed the flub.
The advent of cell phones has changed the plot of B-grad movies.
12:42...must be some reason the taxi dumped her a 1/4 mile from where he could have driven to and watched until she was inside. Other than a lazy Director. Hate to mention it but the old hidden headlights were vacuum operated and that car's engine wasn't running.
Jim Hutton made the role his own. Lawford? Mediocre at best.
Peter Lawford was miscast as Ellery Queen. Jim Hutton was much better in the role. I forgot how bad this one was compared to others.
Ellery Queen was a college boy when I was a boy reading murder mystery magazines.
Asking anybody to be as good as Jim Hutton in this role is asking way too much.
Was he wearing a toupee???
14:57 Poor Peter Lawford looks very haggard with the 70s shag hair and the Atticus Finch eyebrows. It puts 15 years on him. Too bad. I can't imagine the 70s, where the clean cut look was so out of style that it couldn't be used anymore by anyone on tv or movies. I guess that's the result of mass disenchantment from JFK, RFK, Dr. King assassinations plus riots in every major city, where folks burned down their own homes block by block. People wanted to go back in time. No more modern 50s stuff. Grow extra hair, sideburns etc. Put woodgrain on the cars and inside the houses. Paint everything earth tones. Even the TV sets themselves were encased in replicas of antique furniture.
It would have been interesting to see the chemistry between Jim Hutton and Harry Morgan (rather than David Wayne) in the eventual series five years later. Morgan by that point was well entrenched in MASH. The series starring Hutton suffered by being set in the 1940s. It automatically made it Grandma's and Grandpa's show and it was forcibly dated in its approach. This here is just weird with Peter Lawford. I keep expecting to see Sammy or Dean at any moment.
Goodness I just finished watching Harry Morgan in blacke's magic and now he's with another. Peter lawford,, since when did Ellery queen become british??. I personally love the series with actor David Wayne and Jim hutton. Much better than this. Glad the studio went for McMillan and wife and not this tripe. .
"Since when did Ellery Queen become British?"
About the same time that Philip Marlowe left Los Angeles for England (as in the horrible 1970s movie version of Raymond Chandler's "The Big Sleep").
Also his uncle has the same name as his father. So two brothers are both named Richard Queen???? Lawford lousy actor. 😅😅
@@valstone52 Peter Lawford was actually a very good actor - but not as Ellery Queen, and not in this movie.
Thankyou 🎉
You’re welcome 😊
The credits stop @5:01
Must have been a BIG water bed !!!
I didn't know anyone who talked like that. Groovy? I dig it? Cheesy!
I did.
A lot of us did in the 70's. Better than that skibbidi word or rizz like the kids now use. 😂
@marthajohnson2775
Ha! definitely before your time! I was a teenager during the 'sizzling sixties,' and those words/phrases were used quite frequently for those who were involved and participated during the birth of the drug/psychedelic culture.
Ha! You had to be there! I remember that era, and people who were not naturally cool, used that 'lingo' trying so hard to be cool. I never used that so-called hip talk, as I thought it sounded...so...un-cool!
Far better than the filthy language you hear today!
Spoiler Alert:
When the killer entered the apartment for their next victim, they must have had a key. That meant the killer was a relative.
The killer is not a "they". The pronoun is ""he". This can apply for women also.
All of that ‘musical’ noise that introduces this feature grates on the eardrums and the brain. Disgusting.
Aren't Harry Morgan and Peter Lawford pretty much of an age?
Harry Morgan was born in 1915. Peter Lawford was born in 1923. Maybe that’s why they made the characters uncle and nephew rather than father and son.
Marvelous 💻🖥️
bob hastings as tv announcer.
One of many remakes of "M". Not bad.
How does a middle-aged woman overpower an young girl?
Adrenalin.
I don't think Peter Lawford was really "into" the part, it was a lousy script & a typical '70s flick. Probably did it for money & got to kiss Stefanie Powers. LOL.
Yup. Lawford, who wasn’t really much of an actor anyway, was sleep walking through this thing. And after just five minutes the writing is so bad I’m turning it off.
@@Nicksonian You got to see it, I'm telling you.
WELL!!!! They don't make 'em like used to! Almost didn't recognise COL Potter! Anyway ---------
A FIVE-MINUTE intro? Gawd, I almost fell asleep. The first three minutes is so bad, I don’t think I can take anymore.
Give it a shot. You don't know what you're missing.
Please don't take the Lord's name in vain. Mis- spelling it still doesn't make it appropriate.
@@Fred-mp1vf Jebus! Are you serious? Maybe in your book but not mine. What century are you from?
@@Fred-mp1vf You need to examine your head.
I can’t get past that bad Toupee!
Wow, this was bad....I have to say that I was not a fan of most films and TV in the 70s which was my preteen years through high school,
Stupid scene, where cobs not watch near--is the dr going really to the plane or not. Script blue it... 🙂
Is that supposed to make sense?
