If I knew this instrument existed in elementary/grade school, I might have played this instead of bass in the orchestra. Part of it might be the recording device but it seriously sounds like a bowed bass to me if I move the video offscreen.
this may sound like a stupid question, but how heavy is a contrabassoon? Is it easy enough to carry around like a bassoon, or does the extra tubing add a LOT of weight? I used to play the bassoon, but not the contra.
About 4-5Kg for the bassoon (mine's a Fox). The case, as Joe Du states, is very heavy - around 20kg if you have a contra that doesn't come apart. Best to move it around with trolley. Not for short or understrength!
@@justincouch6964 Yeah... I know what you mean. I play piccolo, which itself weighs under a pound. But its case is made of pure Iridium, one of the densist materials around. The case, therefore, although it's small, weighs a whopping 83 pounds. What a workout carrying the damn thing. I woulda probably been better off playing (and therefore schlepping around) the conrabassoon. But, on the positive side, you should feel my biceps! 😁 (all of the above LOL and TIC [tongue-in-cheek])

I've honestly looked everywhere for it and I can't find it at all which makes me kinda sad honestly XP I play bassoon finally and even that would go fine with the solo. but ah. I'm thinking of messaging the channel owner to see where it's from because it seems the guy playing the contra is the same guy who owns the channel.

+James Hansen Nice! I actually wanted to play it but the one at our school has parts missing which are crucial to even making it play. I played bass clarinet before switching to bassoon and I love bassoon. but I'll definitely go ahead and look more and hit you up if I find a score! You could maybe check jwpepper too but I think it's the whole score of the aria but still cool.

as much as i want to love this instrument i can not get over the fact that all i can hear is the reed rattling. constantly. it’s just so harsh and not musical. i actually always wanted to switch from bassoon to contra until i realized it has that same belching sound as baritone sax. the reed is percussive and you hear it slapping. i can’t do it.

Basson is a lot harder to manage. A lot of bassoon players switch to oboe.

Go to the library and check out a piano/vocal score of Glinka's opera "A Life for the Czar." You'll find it in there.
What a great eloquent sound . I must write for this instrument sounds like the lowest cello which doesnt have this kind of tone .

It’s range is similar to double bass but it’s timbre is indeed more like a cello. Double bass is too flappy and chunky sounding from loose strings.

Not as heavy as it looks, but the case for it is a killer.
