  • 178. This is when inexperience sets you back months. Time and time again we have completed the haunching on the piggeries roof and then had to remove it again because of leaks, today we hope is the final time and we will solve the leaky roof situation and be able to continue with renovations.

It makes you wonder if there is some sort of agreement between "certain" vloggers to work together to boost numbers. Or have they discovered a way to manipulate the algorithm? There are a few really excellent, genuine people who are busting their guts doing the work AND spending their nights editing and uploading vlogs for us to enjoy. Just does not seem fair or honest.

With the leak….. I really suggest IF it shows any sign of damp again, to put lead down there. Take the lime up… again … cut the lead into the stone work with a small disc cutter and dress it over the tiles… I wish i was a bit closer, I would come and do it for you ☺️

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 Год назад +1

Exactly, cut a groove into the stone parallel to the roof line, 150 or 200 mm above the tiles, and put zinc or aluminium (I don't think lead is still used for roofing anywhere outside the UK) in there. There's pre-formed material for that very purpose that creates a gutter underneath the tiles. It's shaped like a J with a little lip on the top. The short bit goes under the tiles, the long bit against the wall and the lip straight into the groove in the wall. The mortar will probably crack at some point in the future and leak again.

But i look at your future cottage & i see so much change than when you started. It is no longer a piggery. I think it has been transformed. Look at the floor, the new roof & beams. I felt your discouragement when you said you had had to remove the traunching you had just put on because of the leak! It reminded me of a very descriptive expression my maternal grandmother (who was a country girl!) used to say about how redoing a job made a person feel. Be prepared to be utterly grossed out; I know I was. She said about having to redo a job you thought you were finished with, “It’s like having to lick your calf all over again!” (For those unfamiliar with breeding animals, it refers to a cow after birthing a calf, licking all the birth byproducts off the calf.) I told you it would gross you out! But the thought of doing that a SECOND time compares well to to discouragement level! So glad you don’t have to do it again, Lesa!

Now what you feel like!!! We had a conservative built and for 9 years it leaked and no matter what the builder or us or other people did we could not cure it! Eventually we pulled it down and had a proper roof put on (at great expense) 3years of not leaks then it started again The company who installed it would not return our calls so eventually we called a local man in and after 10 minutes he came down of the ladder and said (l can fix it for £30 so we had it done and touch wood it’s fixed!!!!!!!! After all the rain we had in February it’s still water tight Fingers crossed ! Keep the faith love Caron xx

They are using that for the catering kitchen now if I'm not mistaken. I believe they wanted a cozy place during Christmastime.

Something has changed. It is so produced now. I like the channels and vlogs that don't look like a tv show and now this looks like a tv show. I like more natural channels.

I am very proud of my wife for the way she produces these vlogs, her perseverance and attention to detail is something to be applauded, and I think it is to her credit that the quality has improved to the fact that you thought it was of a television standard. Long may it continue.

I think, maybe, after all this time, Lesa and Ted have hit their stride, and are just more organized and focused. Less little jobs here and there and bigger jobs getting done.
Also, in the beginning, there was still a lot of discovery happening. Now it is more work.
It is hard to please everyone. Some don't want a lot of talking, some love the chatter, some don't like real time, others dislike time-lapse. Some don't want to see the set backs, others call it fake if everything isn't shown.
I find all of it interesting and I learn loads of stuff that I would never encounter in my own life.
Hope you change your mind. Cheers

Sadly cutting corners with a roof does cause even more misery. Using lead for roof flashing has been a standard for many years. A lesson learnt we have all made mistakes only way to learn. Onward and upward.

Haunching has also been used for years and years, lead is prohibitively expensive, and I guess we thought with the advice we had would have worked, however, circumstance and inexperience was more the cause, than as you say "cutting corners"

Why waste time and money at the gym. My neighbour recently had roofing work done roofer removed lead flashing and replaced with plastic and some sort of mastic was horrified time will tell ,suppose like plastic guttering, glued fish tanks ,car gearboxs etc life & technology moves on ,keep my fingers crossed it holds long term.

Did anyone else have issues with the audio this week? I heard the opening music just fine up until Lesa began explaining what was happening with the roof. ...NO SOUND! I went back and turned on , Captions, in order to follow what was happening. * shrug * So sorry about your roof....couldn't figure out the captions but something wrong with hauntings ? Sounds like you need ghost busters. lol

Great work fixing the leaks. In regard to the floor in the "piggery", have a look into rammed earth, it will keep with the theme of a barn and can be polished with linseed oil to a beautiful and serviceable surface.
