  • mdshop.us/1Uj19Mf All of us here at Marine Depot are getting pretty excited for the new Disney-Pixar film, Finding Dory.
    When the original film, Finding Nemo, was released, we saw a HUGE increase in demand for keeping Clownfish and Blue Tangs in an aquarium.
    As responsible aquarists, we thought it would be a good idea to take you through a complete overview of how to properly care for these animals in a home aquarium.
    In today's installment, we will look at the Regal Blue Tang, which is the real life fish that inspired the quirky character, Dory.
    Be sure to tune in to our follow up episode which will feature Nemo, a clownfish.

    Thank you so much for making this video - now that the finding dory movie I can just imagine how many uninformed families and parents are going to just go out and buy a regal tang and put it in a 5 gallon with some table salt. I really hope this and the rising price of blue tangs stops many uninformed people and kids from going out and killing these beautiful fish.

    That was a big help. I believe algae, in the tank, is also healthy for the tangs...and it helps to keep that deep blue color! They like grazing on algae in my tank.

    Got my Red Sea reefer 350 at Marine Depot we love it, and finally got our Dory just about 2" and she's so happy and healthy with our clown fish and yellow tang. I am putting extreme garlic on their sea weeds and air dry it and then give it to them, hoping this will keep them healthy and ich free and my clown fish are eating seaweeds too if they are very hungry. this video helps a lot. ty Marine Depot.

    I had a fresh water aquarium for several years, now I have decided to switch to saltwater aquarium.
    can you tell me which fish I should be starting with, what kind of lights,filters I should use and what should I feed the fish.
    My tank is small (about 70 gallons) will it be fine or shall I switch to a larger tank ? Also tell me if it is safe to buy these fish from local small dealers or should I buy them from Large scale Breeders?

      Shreya Patil it depends whether you are getting a fish only or live rock system. If only fish only, there are some great, cheap leds on amazon that are made in China. Good value, however I'm not sure if it can sustain coral that well. As for filters, you can use a canister or Hob like freshwater, but if you have the budget and plumbing skills, I highly recommend a sump because of how flexible it is. You can put filter socks/pads, wet/dry filters! a refugium, a skimmer(which I highly recommend if you can afford it), and reactors for your chemical media. You can pick and choose which options fit your goals and budget. For fish, you can't go wrong with a clownfish as your first fish. Later some nice fish you can put are gobies, dwarf angels, fairy wrasses, and even a yellow tang(some might object but imo 70 is big enough). Saltwater tanks, especially fish only system, aren't much harder than freshwater other than measuring salinity and that diseases are more common in saltwater. Check out forums like reef central andreef2reef, websites like live aquaria for fish info, and videos like the BulkReefSupply 52. I hope your experience in saltwater is great!

    • @keturishi521
      @keturishi521 6 лет назад +1

      Shreya Patil honestly you are fine with a 75 gallon larger tanks are hard I have a 120 gallon it’s tough. The fish I recommend yellow tang damsels flame angel clowns and or dwarf zebra lion fish ( careful it needs to be DWARF ) if you are on a massive budget do not do sump use a hang on back filter. Lighting any not an expensive light. Lots of rock 1 inch sand caves and swimming space!!!! I wish you luck keep nitrates and phosphates low too.

    There should be a special permission for being allowed to keep these fish, which will help blue Tangs to find proper homes. Lot's of people, who want to buy "Dory" don't even have the experience with freshwater tank and they certainly won't handle the saltwater tank. And moreover, they don't even bother to educate themselves.

    I just bought one a week ago, then 3 days ago I'm extremely worried she got a lot of ich on her body, they were growing fast...so I was become worried. But miracle happened today, even though afther she got ich, it still has big appetite, then Dory made it, she cured herself...I dont put any particular medication or treatment just regular feeding basis and she cure herself, I dont know if it only happening to me or does dory do that??

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  7 лет назад

      Hi Ray, it is pretty common for Tangs to get Ich as they are very susceptible to it and can get stressed pretty easy. Despite this they are also pretty hardy when in a good sized tank and will often make it through as long as they are still eating :)

    Hey I have a question, I am converting my 20 gallon fresh water aquarium to salt water reef tank. I know those blue tangs grow to a max of 12 inches but I will be using a large canister filtration system so would just one tang & one clown fish be OK in that tank?

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  8 лет назад +4

      I would not recommend putting a tang in a tank of this size. The minimum tank size should be about 50-75 gallons at a minimum of 4ft long.

    • @maxxiang8746
      @maxxiang8746 7 лет назад

      fish can get depressed, and a large tank size is not just for the ammonia, its also for the highly active nature of this fish, oh and also a canister filter isn't going to do with marine aquariums.

    Hi Robert, I would like to know at what point of time can we add a juvenile regal blue tang into a marine aquarium tank. I mean how many months of cycling is required.
    Mine is now cycled for about 5 months. It has one percula, one clarki clown and one humberg damsel. All swimming healthy and happy.

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  7 лет назад +1

      At 5 months, I would say you are perfectly safe as long as the parameters are stable and the tank is large enough. With Hippo (Blue) Tangs they are actually quite hardy when cared for properly and in the right size aquarium. Just give it space to thrive, give it good food, and you should have great success!

      If you plan it right and take good care of your fish that should be fine. It's probably best that you just get a fish that can live it's whole life in one tank though. I don't own any marine fish though so you should go do more reseach about blue tangs before getting one.

    • @christopherburke3257
      @christopherburke3257 5 лет назад

      A baby blue tang still needs space to swim... it's not a size of the fish matter here. For ex. A 1" clownfish would do fine in a 30 gallon, as they tend to host a particular spot versus swim in the water column... on the other hand a 1" baby blue tang would never do well in a 30 gallon, since it needs to swim. The problem gets exponentially more stressful and harmful to the tang as they grow. Trust me I've tried and learned the hard way. It's not fun repeatedly wasting $80 on a baby tang that I tried to stuff into a 40 gallon. It's also terribly cruel.

      Tangs require a lot of room. How much exactly is very opinion based amongst hobbyist. Some say 180g some say 200g but in my opinion nothing will happen to juvenile tangs in 10+ gallon aquariums but as with anything, their is a spectrum of how much you can get away with breaking rules. The bigger it gets the more stressed it will be. As far weather that has any affect on it's lifespan though is a topic that actually doesn't have much scientific research in. Again, the bigger it gets, the worse off it will be though. Make no mistake about that.

      jackiekearney Sorry about that. But keep in mind these fish are extremely hard to care of and I would care if you killed a poor fish.

    Don’t keep blue tangs with other blue tangs because they don’t like their same type. Keep them with clownfish, turbo snails, and other types of tangs instead

    My blue tang nipping on corals

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  3 года назад +1

      That is actually quite common and can be tough to deal with. I would monitor your tang and see if it is just picking any sort of algae off the coral or if it is actually going after the coral. Something else to try is feeding less but more often.

      @@BulkReefSupply unfortunatly it nip on Clove polyps , zoa and kenya tree. I decide to sell it and get new one. Half an hour after feeding Seaweed, nips coral.

    All good info except for two things, I believe that they need 72” of swimming room in a home aquarium, 125 gallons for one, 75 more gallons for each additional one after that, and unlike other tangs pacific blue tangs are omnivores, meaning they require some meaty foods.

    Can I put one in a 20 gallon long

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  7 лет назад

      I would not suggest it, the tank is just too small for this fish in the long run. The 20 gallon long would only really be suitable for a temporary holding place. 4ft long is pretty much the minimum in order to give the Tang plenty of room to swim and grow.
