Onyx Guards are supposedly the elite units for the COG and yet they seem to get destroyed pretty easily by the Locust. I think they rely too much on their advanced equipment, leading them to be overconfident.
They didn't have access to the most advanced armor, plot armor.
That's true but then again, how many Theron Elites and Palace Guards have Marcus and Delta Squad killed alone?
They didn't have the most important armor of all, PLOT ARMOR!!

Yea, that's true. Even tho most, if not all of GoW media presents them as "elite soldiers", the games so far showed them as nothing more them douchebags in shiny armour.
Heck Sofia Hendryk, the only Onix Guard used in the games, didn't make up alive (unfortunetly).
To throw in my two cents, I think the Onyx struggled in Halvo Bay because of inflexible leadership rather than lack of skill. Frankly we see their corpses littering places a bunch, but we also see the bodies of normal Gears littering places too, so the Locust likely clean up their own dead and leave human dead to rot or be eaten by Wretches. Whichever comes first. Edit: Meanwhile when you fight them in RAAM's shadow, even on normal it isn't very hard for them to down or potentially kill RAAM, Kryll shield or no.
The onyx guard got rekt because the locust knew how much a threat they were, and so also deployed elite units against them (Karn at the museum in halvo), but I'd love to see the story of s full onyx squad but in the early days
I think Sofia was the only Onyx guard besides Keegan that actually did something useful in the whole series. Hopefully the next gears of war game we see the last carmine as an Onyx guard

I laugh at the fact the onyx guards are supposed to be the best of the best in the COG but in gears 3 and judgement there either getting their asses kicked or have been killed by standard locust drones
They're trained for stealth missions which make them a disadvantage in a real fight. Since delta squad are more experienced and better skilled fighters is why they are never killed easily lore wise.

@@NikosM112so they’re like the clone commando’s in Star Wars. For context, at the battle of Geonosis, the inexperienced Jedi sent the commandos, which were meant for black ops missions, to frontline combat, and then were disappointed that the troops meant for close quarters combat didn’t do well in the open field
I love the onyx guards…I still play the onyx guard till this day, just because how mysterious they were back then
Funny thought actually at about 4:50 , the lead Onyx Guard isn't actually shoving Marcus and is making a point to move out of his way if possible. Though the second guy definitely goes all shove mode.
Just thought it was a nice touch making the one in charge seem a lot more reasonable. Otherwise aesthetically, the Onyx Guard are definitely my favorite characters in Gears of War.
Though the only competition they have are the Carmines, and no one beats out Lizzie.
I’d have disagree there, Lizzie was cool but you can’t beat the “Grub Killer” Clayton

People tend to forget elite troops are still human, their training accounts for conventional warfare not eldritch horrors that crawl out the earth that just ripped your friend in half.

Normal gears like delta squad bodied the locust the locust also bodied the gears they're supposed to be the best but always lose

Really lame when no matter how “elite” and badass they are, they ALWAYS get wiped out and absolutely dunked on in every single gears of war game ever

This is a good question. The technology is a lot more advanced in the Halo Universe. That being said standard ODSTs aren't always that elite in comparison to the hand picked Onyx guard members. A squad of top ODSTs, with the best equipment the UNSC has, would probably win against the top of the Onyx guard. However, it would be a lot closer if you compare average ODST to the Onyx guards.
@@coolspider295 Yeah. And the main thing that geas of war has over halo is strength, durability, stamina, and endurance. So the Onyx Guards would be able to tank more hits and can stay in the fight without stopping. And I do believe that the Onyx Guards armor is a lot more durable, and I believe (correct me if I’m wrong) that they have a lot more firepower than a normal ODST soldier.

Being an elite fighting unit against other Serans is a lot different then being elite against the Locust like Marcus and Delta squad were.

I could see the Onyx Guard being similar to the Nazis Waffen-SS troops or the Soviets NKVD troop rear guards (the guys who shot retreating troops during battles) during WW2.

Well they were cocky since they were given advanced armor and equipment then a regular COG gear. But that arrogance in mind is what lead to their downfall

It really changes your view point when you realize the Onyx guard are more like Saddam's Republican Guard then the US Delta Force.
Better then the regular army in funding and equipment and likely with more skilled officers and soldiers but they're really just a class based military.

Where do you immerse yourself in all of this lore? I’ve played all the games but a bunch of the stuff I see you talk about aren’t covered in campaigns
What do you think is better the Onyx Guard or the Cog Commandos?
Hard to compare them. The comments were for stealthy, small unit, infiltration type missions, and sabotage. (At least by real world commando standards) while the onyx guard seem like massively beefed up elite infantry seeing as they have their own air wing and tanks battalions and brigades
Like any none delta unit in GoW, the onyx guard are extremely underwhelming and on screen weak.

I always loved the onyx guard. But I hated how they would just die off so quickly in cutscenes or in game. Bros in black deserved better for being elite soldiers

I know it’s a game and it’s for gameplay purposes but why does the cog wear bright blue car lights on their armour? Is there a way to turn it off?
just game design and faction affiliation, there's no way to turn it off
Because its cool and iconic😐, plus in that universe I'm sure there is a way to turn it off, I think it's for dark places and the helmets are supposed to be intimidating, although the Gorasni or UIR have them beat with that

Have you played beast mode? I'm mostly a armored Kantus main and I fuck a single lonely kantus can kill prescott in his Silverback and his group of Onyx Guards with ease.
