In GoW 1 even Drones take almost full clip from Lancer to kill. Better go for headshots. Locust just let Berserkers loose on enemy, not caring if they live or die. Considering how rare Berserkers are, it's kind of counterproductive. One thing that both the game and this video undervalue are the mortars- holy cow, are GoW mortars good! They're like a cross between airburst and artillery, and can kill the big guys with ease. Against swarms of infantry, mortar barrages are a murderously effective countermeasure. If every human squad (8-15 soldiers) had a mortar team, then the locusts would have sustained even higher casualties. Also, flooding the hollows with ocean water was the right choice, but how did it take 14 years and a scientific prodigy to think of that? And how come the researchers who studied immulsion never performed chemical analyses (which would have shown that it's a living organism)? It's great for plot, but even the USSR wasn't that scientifically backwards.
Good point on the mortars, but the issue about them was that they couldn't simply start pouring hell because of the number of casualties it would have caused(not that it stopped them from using the Hammer of Dawn). On E-Day the locusts moved quickly and by sunset the kryll had covered most of the sky which blocked radio communications and made it next to impossible to know if it was safe to again launch mortar attacks. As for the flooding, it ultimately failed because they didn't know the extent of the hollows and just how big a network of caves it was. The only 2 scientists that knew about the immulsion where the parents of Marcus, but the mom was killed off before being able to disclose her discovery and the dad kept it hidden for unknown reasons. The rest of the world only saw the immulsion as oil from our perspective so they didn't know what was going on.
@@jaimegarcia4436 I'll grant that in the first few weeks of combat, the COG was not fully mobilized and couldn't rapidly respond to the locust attacks. But the war dragged on for almost 2 decades, so it wasn't won or lost in a single stroke. Once the initial shock wore off, then the COG should have had no difficulty employing mortars en masse, before or after using the hammer of dawn. I can also understand that not all of the tunnels would be flooded at once, but once flooded, it's no longer usable, and dangerous to work next to. So even if they only flooded tunnels as they popped up, over time the effects would add up. As for the immulsion, any scientific research on its chemical properties would have discovered it to be a living organism. Oil today is processed and refined using techniques derived from hundreds of experiments. Even if most experiments were for the purpose of optimization, they discovered lots of other useful things in the process. So in order to be totally ignorant as to the source of the fuel (oil or immulsion), there would have to be zero experimentation, and no attempts to improve efficiency or cost-effectiveness.
@@michaelmccabe3079 You make very good points, I wasn't really going in on trying to think of it like that. I was simply answering the overall question with regards to the lore known, my bad if it seemed otherwise ignorant on my part.
@@jaimegarcia4436 According to the lore, the leaders of the COG have no scientific interests, nor any military competence beyond 'Carmine Jenkins!' charges. As someone who’s dedicated her free time since 2011 to scouring wikis about Gears, I’m impressed with how thorough this video is. I’m glad to have clicked on this.
Gears 5 rewrite and recontextualization of the lore was crazy. Myrrah, being rewritten as a sort of rare-form queen-type locust with queen-types all being mostly human and slow aging but being psychically linked to the entire horde was pretty cool.
Myrrah was not a scientist but a patient, and she became rogue 'cause she had a kid with a scientist, and that the scientist was killed and she thought her daughter was killed too
“The mystery” is almost always a bs excuse for lazy writing. Don’t want to explain anything in your story? Just have a character say “we may never know the answer” or something akin to that. Boom, now you can explain absolutely nothing about anything and people will praise you for it.
I must admit, I'd love to see an alternate reality spin-off game/trilogy where Myrrah decides her best hope is to warn the Humans about the Lambent and ally with them. Imagine the Locust and the COG working together against the Lambent infection?
I always hated how the Locust was “created” instead of “evolved.” It never made sense how the locusts had have made their own religion, culture, mutate to have a unique biology to no longer be considered human, rise to the numbers to rival the surface world and tame such underground creatures like the corpser, brumak and berserk near flawlessly ALL within a single human lifetime. It would have been cooler if they evoled to be like that then we could have had a underground universe before E day like how we got the world before the Prendrumn wars
David the locust and most of its beast were humans and animals that started mutating because of their exposure to impulsion. Less then 70 years is all it took for them to mutate into the locusts, then forget their human organs completely, create their own culture underground then make a war machine that topples the surface sole supper power. If it took 300 or a thousand years before the locust showed up then I wouldn’t be complaining. All I’m saying is that I hate how so much happened in so few years that it is physically impossible. They did evolved from humans, dogs, apes and whatever made the reavers from exposure to immersions but happened in such a small amount of time you can’t actually call it natural evolution. Thats why I say they’re created even by accident.
@@ReaperofValhalla No one said the lost all their human physiology, it just mutated because they were part lambent. The lambent supercell is not similar to humans at all. If anything, they are closer to human-lambent hybrids.
DivideByZero your not wrong but my point is that it happened all to fast. If the locust were the descendants of humans who got trapped underground because a large part of land got sunken hundreds of years ago then thats fine but they were humans that were locked underground by the government sometime during the predruim wars. Why they didn’t just turn into lambant straight away is a plot hole in the lore. They were created by accident by human influence circumstances. Yes they mutated but mutations are unstable, locust are stable enough that can (though dangerously) breed reliably
Now now! We may not have ground troops built like four brick shithouses plastered together, but we do have way more practical toys than the COG does, I don't care how many redundant organs a gribbly has, if it's made of meat, an Mk19 automatic grenade launcher will sort it out, as will an M2 Browning.
We also have the good sense to support infantry with vehicles - like, three to five tanks working in tandem with mechanized infantry units and close air support. That's something the COG really doesn't seem to be good at. I have yet to even mention our ultimate weapon: we have guns...With flashlights ATTACHED to them! I have every confidence that a modern military would prevail without nuking the planet into a helllscape (mostly because deep tunnels are pretty good at containing radiation) but we, the general populace, would still be rather screwed.
No our military will be desimated, you're overestimating our military and talking as if locust aren't fucking massive buff creatures who are 7 feet tall, have heightened senses, tough skin that can take a variety of small to medium rounds and can't be punctured by blades, night vision, are just as intelligent as us, have a variety of massive and extremely deadly creatures at their disposal, and like they dont know tactics at all. They're bread for war, they will slaughter all of us. Even without a Queen they were still extremely deadly, resourceful, and managed plenty of tactical genius. Locusts are also very well trained, fearless, and never back down until all the puny humans in sight are dead. They also use weaponry with high caliber rounds our armor today is still shit. You can go ahead and attempt to defeat Locust Drones, theron guards, boomers, wretches, Brumaks, corpsers, beast riders, blood mounts, berserkers, reavers, etc your with your tanks, air, and infantry support. I bet if they were real you along with myself and everyone else we all know n love would either be food for their bellies or just ripped to shreds by their powerful weaponry or their own hands
@@makavelishakur9394 They're still made of meat, they're large targets and they apparently have no concept of camouflage, vehicles or armor that isn't inspired by a heavy metal album cover. I agree that ground troops with small arms would be boned - that's why we, unlike the COG, don't send out unsupported infantry squads. A Brumak can be killed with a mortar. I don't like their odds against a 120mm HEAT round. or a Hellfire missile.
@@Leafy1-j1l You have a valid point, but our toys won't be enough hell it took a global bombing to delay the locust, even then they came back to slaughter people. I doubt brumaks will be killed by a single mortar when you put it this way. Locust skin can easily handle blades and small arms fire, now tho brumaks aren't locust, they themselves have powerful skin just you know up to their scale. They take on and destroy COG tanks at all ranges, COG tanks, im willing to bet are much more powerful than ours in terms of fire power yet brumaks can tank those rounds. (Brumaks are killed in game by the player controled tank for gameplay purposes balance, so dont even use that shit argument) the COG has extremely powerful weaponry standard COG weaponry packs heavy firepower that doesn't stop locust from ripping into them does as little difference as the heavy armor they wear. I know our marines are badasses but against locust?? I don't think moral will last against these beasts.
@@makavelishakur9394 How 'bout the fact that the snub pistol is stamped as a .50 caliber sidearm? vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/gearsofwar/images/2/2e/Snub_Pistol_Caliber.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20090324050552 We do have .50 caliber sidearms, so that gives us a baseline to extrapolate from. Let's be generous and assume the snub is an autoloader that fires rounds comparable to .500 S&W magnum, not .50 AE. That's probably not possible on that frame, but I'm going to assume future tech somehow fixes that. That means the snub puts out 3091 joules of energy at best. The fact that the locust are able to take more than one of those is impressive! But a 30-06 can easily manage 4050, and a 12 gauge slug gets around 4453. If you don't think we can issue hunting rifles quickly enough? Firing .50 Beowulf out of an AR platform is just a matter of swapping in parts, and that'll get .3092. The lancer is clearly a less powerful weapon than the snub, considering the amount of ammo it takes to down a drone, but it still penetrates. I'll leave what that means for the AKM to you.
The cog used to be a benevolent representative government but the war with the locust forced Marshal law and extreme measures for survival such as the breeding farms and hammer strikes were taken

Don’t forget that the locust was fighting a two front war so imagine if they didn’t have to fight the lambent and focused all there forces on the humans
Actually if I remember correctly the locust did just fine with the lambent in gears 1 and they didn't become a problem until the lightmass bomb destroyed the outer hollow allowing for the lambent to go on the offensive closer to nexus
@@UzilKryll06 They were on an even playing field in gears one, not getting slaughtered but still falling in numbers to lambent. But the imulsion was what made the lambet very hard to deal with since the locusts were dying of sickness as well as the lambent.
That is why the locusts invaded in the first place actually since staying closer to the imulsion was killing them each day.
Nothing would happen. The lambent was the reason they rose from the surface and wage war with the humans.
The lambent exists for the same reason the locust do, and there is a reason locust are more susceptible to it. The lambent come *from* imulsion. and the locust mutate *because* of imulsion.

X'D This is also why I think Gears of War: Judgement was particularly fitting: it's a bunch of political officers who care more about procedure than results.

But we still don't know where they came from or what they really are
They did evolve, did you not watch the video?
“Why you wouldn’t survive a Pokémon, war,” was gold.
I love the lore you give with the videos, keep up the good work.
You always kick some BUNZ bro. Keep this AWESOME series coming. PS luvd the Pokemon ones TOO. rock on
@@makavelishakur9394 So analyzing a video game using the gameplay is a "shit argument"? What sources would you have me use, then?

vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/gearsofwar/images/2/2e/Snub_Pistol_Caliber.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20090324050552
We do have .50 caliber sidearms, so that gives us a baseline to extrapolate from.

"SHOW ME THE LOCUST R34"
You're gonna regret that.(?)
I'm playing gears 1, it's 2 years older than me bro and that berserker at the start gave me a stroke and a seizure
Breeding farms kind of explains the physical stature of the human soldiers in the lore, and roids of course. Also the UIR sounds better than the COGS.
The way I read it, UIR is as bad as late 2000’s Russia, while COG is an Orwellian totalitarian state. So yeah, ‘better.’
The cog used to be a benevolent representative government but the war with the locust forced Marshal law and extreme measures for survival such as the breeding farms and hammer strikes were taken
COG is more memorable. UIR kind of sounds like a catchy thing a bank would make to get you to spend money
