- When people hear the word graffiti, many no doubt think of vandalism, but these days a growing number of enthusiasts are calling it art. Rita Braver tours a N.Y. museum exhibit of graffiti, some of which is worth upwards of $100,000.
It's an unspoken rule for graffiti artists to never tag people's homes or private property. It's art for public spaces, that's up for grabs.

dotpoke well I was being sarcastic to a point but your right in a sence but you theirs many graffiti artist who I've seen up for years and never showed improvement always with the same wack style running with a crew that is just fuckin up our streets with no type of creative art those are the one I'm talking about, but to you other point of course no is born piecing it takes practice I know a couple legends and they started simply by fucking up piece books till they got a lil better than they moved on to mobb inside closed warehouses and finally when they masters it they when on the live streets and bilboards I think that's how it should be done not just hit up because you think your creative I'm all for freedom and shit but that's just makes us looks bad.Js no disrespect.

I think a solution to the whole Graffiti Vandalism thing is just have big random walls or walls that are marked where they has been permission for the public to do art right there. I think that would help.

It’s amazing! This shouldn’t be overlooked it’s a form of expression, I don’t think it’s bad at all! It expresses urban ideas that I don’t think are just “vandalism.” It looks better than just a blank train, or a blank building! It looks very good!

Who cares what that lady feels about graffiti.. Take away our Boys Clubs, YMCA's, Parks, and we as kids had nowhere else to go, so we expressed ourselves with graffiti. Worth the risks it took to become that Banksy In life.

I love graffiti. What I consider vandalism is those billboards (fast food, alcohol, etc.) that come into my community; I didn't ask for those.

Art and vandalism are not mutually exclusive.
If it is done well, it is both. If it is done poorly (i.e.- simple 'tagging'), than it is pure vandalism.
it is rules graffiti artists follow,unless the last vandelisers. never private property, churches or schools. and other rules that i am not gonna get in to. I think it is art, even taggs. it gives the streets some colors. for the writers out there, dont get caught and have fun! I live in norway and here it was a war with graffiti and the government, eventually they did put up legall walls that helped younger people to get started with this amazing art and community. last time i was at the wall a freaking 6 - 8 year old was with his dad painting. it was the best site ever to see a so young child doing something that is fun and creativ! so art yes, vandalism yes. No graffiti = no hip-hop that many people in the world love today.
I just finished reading The Mole People by Jennifer Toth. She dedicates a chapter about the underground graffiti scene... This is really beautiful.

Imagine being this much of a boomer
Imagine a young person full of anger depression etc. and having artistic talent for graffiti but no way to express himself legally. Public places specifically for aerosol art would be his outlet. He could really spend time on his work (it takes a few days to do a great burner) and there would be a lot less tags around the city. At least that would be my perfect world.

I believe tagging and graffiti is two different entities using the same tool (spray can). Graffiti is an art form but tagging is a form of vandalism or protest. But usually to boast the artist name.
Nope. Tagging is a part of graffiti. It’s what we graffiti artists started with. Our own tag, that we stylised in our own way. We then moved to throwups(the most simple form of a graffiti piece) and then we moved to graffiti pieces.

all you need is a brush and paint to make real art like mona lisa if you have the training and the dedication and the mastery to do so, you don't need to go around puking tag on the wall and call it "art" it's not art, it's a form of degeneracy.
You'd be surprised that graffiti artists do use stuff like oil paint and canvas for their work.

I think it is the thought that count's. Sometimes i make graffiti and sometimes i vandalize. I dont think either is art, but since i force it out there for people to see my opinion does not matter.

Most of this stuff is pretty poor. Check out the work of people like DAIM, MODE 2 or AROE to see really good stuff.

Stephen Hilton no they’re not. Tagging is the root of graffiti. In order to make good pieces, you have to have a nice tag. It’s a form of caligrafy.

Tagging is territorial "turf" marking for gangs...and the sloppy , dripping over lapping simple "writing" of spray paint letters onto a subway car is merely intimidation by gangs to declare their area...it is vandalism and junk.
Graffiti with preliminary drawings..sketches and "meaningful" social messages or artistic expression with skillful execution and insightful thought IS art.
its rarley marking for gangs, just a simpler form of grafitti. if you're gonna do it ilegally you usually spend time practicing all types of grafitti to progress ur style
