I was a big fan of Doctor Who when I was a kid (Tennant / Smith years), and stopped when Capald came in, for a multitude of reasons. Went all the way back to "Rose" in 2022 & binged all of New Who, including Capaldi's era for the first time - loved it. So when I got to this episode, I was thinking all throughout: "that guy looks like the Saxon Master...nah, can't be", and then picked up on his theme in the background as well. Due to me having stopped watching the show, I wasn't spoiled about John Simm's return, which I'm heavily grateful for because Simm is my favourite Master, so I properly freaked out when he pulled off his disguise - i love him so much!!!
John returns as The Master. God this is gonna be insane.
The music in the build up to the reveal in this episode is INCREDIBLE
I wasn't very taken with Series 10 when it was first out. If you look at the original broadcasts we find they were released between April and July 2017 (barring the Christmas special following) but they pretty much all have a horror theme. Horror stories demand cold dark winter evenings for atmosphere, but there they were as summer came in; shockingly crass marketing.
Now when I dip back in I think there are some brilliant episodes in there and this was one of them.
Series 10 is my fave and agreed ....horror is my bag and since Moffat left the horror became so rare sadly ....this two parter is absolute peak 💙💙 if it aired winter 2016 it would've likely had bigger ratings and such atmosphere but still summer 2017 slapped with this every Saturday
You want to pay very close attention to the next episode.
After you watch it, I will explain something very important.
Compare this the later Doctor’s and it’s chalk and cheese. So dark and so well written.
So when is this Master? Post Gallifrey Stands? Post drums and after he goes through to Gallifrey?
I do not mean to be mean, but Deepa forgets people a lot.
I would say, in future, Luke must give her a "here is the important shit. *REMEMBER THIS BECAUSE IT WILL BE SUPREMELY IMPORTANT AND DO NOT EVER FORGET IT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES EVER!*" speech before each series where things recur.
Because the fact that Deepa did *not* have an "OMG IT IS THE MASTER!?!?!?!?! LE GASP!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!" reaction is very disappointing.
If you follow, you would know this is Deepa down a T. And it's great. If you want full on sweaty reactions I'd imagine other reactors are better suited for you lol.
Also it's kind of crazy you want her to be reminded of something before it happens in order for you to go, ah good she remembered. Crazy take IMO
@@markmckeown87 I do follow; the fact it's STILL recurring this long is worries me. Because there are things in the future that she'll have to remember and you can bet your bottom dollar that she'll forget them and be going "Huh? What!?" instead of "OOOOH, THEY'RE BACK! WFBHSJDBFHSDHVFGVWHJEHVASVDHVAERR!"
Honestly we can defend her here. It has been a while since she saw him and that happens with Doctor Who because I did forget things as well because it been a while since it happened and saw them but then I remember.

Not Deepa laughing at "I am Bill Potts" 😂 probably the most heartbreaking line of the episode as well 😂
If anyone was going to manage a laugh in that moment… it’s Deepa 😂
Quite possibly the best Cyberman story in all of Who, certainly the best one since the show came back in 2005 - it nails the grim body horror aspect of the conversion process, really exploring the tragic and nightmarish circumstances that would lead to them coming into existence, and putting someone like Bill, who we'd really grown to care about, through that process is just devastating to watch. And bringing the original Cybermen back (actually a gift from Moffat to Capaldi - these Cybermen were his favourite monsters growing up) was the perfect way to explore this angle

The pre-surgery Cybermen were fantastic. So much creepiness yet the understandable need to survive by upgrading.

Maybe a hot take but Moffat was Who's best showrunner. He did Holy Shit moments better than anyone. Even with a certain recent one notwithstanding.
If I hadn't been spoiled beforehand I definitely would've thought that was Mark Gatiss under the makeup, it looked a lot more like him than Simms IMO.

@@lukeyreadI knew straight away from the eyes of "Mr Razor" who he was (prob speaks to how much DW I've rewatched & how much I adored Life On Mars thou) but we knew John was coming.
For those who forget at the end of "The Pilot" there was a "Coming Soon" trailer which revealed John Simm 🤦
It played at the press screening & was plastered all over the tabloids the next day especially, if memory serves me by "The Sun" newspaper & then showbiz reporter Dan Wootton, front page news "Guess Who's Back" headline!! 🤯
Moffat was absolutely furious (he might of spoken about it in his farewell interviews with Christel from the fan show i think?) but I guess he thought once it was played to the press there was absolutely no hiding it, so it was included on broadcast instead of being taken out.
It's was such a shame because when he was filming outside with Pearl under heavy prosthetics no one had a clue who he was on the night shoot.
John Simm: “Do you still like disguises? Of they are rather necessary when you happen to be someone’s …FORMER PRIME MINISTER!”

The Master really likes to mess around with humans almost as much the Doctor does, except the Master really messes them up in the process.
(Cybermen/Toclafanes etc.)

This penultimate episode and series finale was much better than ‘Legend of Ruby’ & ‘Empire of death’
This one was damn good, I would have to say. I was pretty keen on 12's season with Bill.
Come on they where good even though I thought Empire of death had it up and down I be honest on that but they where good.

Meh... The Doctor Falls is nowhere near as good as World Enough and Time. The Doctor has some good moments, but the plot is pretty terrible, compared to this. Doctor Who has a real problem with finales, in my opinion. Series 1, 2 and 5 stuck the landing, but Last of the Time Lords drops the ball, so does Journey's End, so does Wedding of River Song, Name of the Doctor, Death in Heaven, Hell Bent, The Doctor Falls, Battle of (whatever), Timeless Child, the last few episodes of Flux and Empire. 3/14 final episodes being good (in my opinion) is a shockingly bad ratio.
Close to Pinnacle Doctor Who these two episodes. We didn't know how long we'd have to wait for this quality to come back to the show after this 😢
We needed a convo about Missy and who is Deepas favorite master so far. Then we could have done a ‘mines the Harold Saxon master do you remember him’
8:00 The issue wirh going to the present - is that Tardis almost always takes them to place where someone needs help. So you are going to Aldis, and it turns out to he infested by Cybermen, you want vacations in Hawaii - Weeping Angels gonna get you. Even if you gonna get lucky and you end up having great spa day - it's probably Doctor and dozen other people who gonna get ended, like in Midnight, where Donna just chilled and Doctor had one of the most horrifying sightseeing visits in his life.

So far as I can tell this is the first time the Genesis of the Cybermen has been shown.
It is the first time the Mondasian colony ship has been seen on screen.
Moffat is a real fan of the show.
The Cybermen were humans that came from the sister planet of Mondas.
As the planet was dying and falling out of orbit and earth refusing to take the refugees, they had no other choice to sail through space without a home planet

I totally agree with Deepa. This style of cyberman is way creepier. I wish RTD had realised that and hadn't updated them so much when the show first came back. I never found them scary and this was the first time I did. The big booming stomping cyberman of RTD's original era just didn't have the creepiness. He always thinks everything has to be big and bombastic.
