  • [Ep. 961] Cycling on the former railway from Tilburg in the Netherlands to Turnhout in Belgium. The line was called Bels Lijntje (Belgian Line) because also the part in the Netherlands was owned by a Belgian railway company. The line was converted to a cycle way in the early 1990s. The ride is 32.4km long. More information in the blog post: bicycledutch.w... There is also a sped-up version: • (Fast) Ride Tilburg (N...

    I grew up in Tilburg and just found the Bicycle Dutch rides. The Tilburg rides used to be my stomping grounds and 50 years later it's a real joy to be able to do these rides at home. Can't tell you how much I enjoy them.

    Very familiar to me. My hometown.
    I would have taken a slightly different route at the start. After the NS train station, go right and go left an drive in the direction of University train station, Wandelbos and Warande. At the end of Warande go left and you’re on the original route of the railway track Bels Lijntje. You would have missed a lot of traffic lights that way and a lot less car noise.
    I haven’t been further than Baarle Nassau because I always go in the direction of Poppel there. Or earlier from Alphen in the direction of Nieuwkerk.

      @@steemlenn8797 Belgian cigarettes, Dutch butter, Belgian gasoline, Dutch vegetables, Belgian fireworks...
      There was even a bank with only access in the Netherlands and its vault in Belgium, so no tax accountant could inspect it.
      A lot of this funny 'stupidity' has been resolved by treaties, and later ofcourse by EU law. Both municipalities share one police station where both nationalities are represented, and where they cooperate to keep an eye on the 'naughty' citizens.
      During the Covid lockdown a textile supermarket had to reorganize because rules in both countries did not match up. The border goes through the shop and it has an access in both countries. On a few days the Dutch part had a 'Do not cross' tape to prevent customers to get 'forbidden fruits'. No wonder the citizens have always resisted a solution, which happened in many other places along the border, just to keep their smugglers paradise.
      Talking about beer, there is an Abbey on the border, not in Baarle but in Achel, where the monks brew beer and which is accessible from both countries. ruclips.net/video/XdnDFEdmx8I/видео.html

    At 56:40 the motorist gave way to the cyclist even though he (the motorist) had right of way. This would hardly ever happen in the UK.

    • @BicycleDutch
      @BicycleDutch  Год назад +3

      Well spotted. The priority arrangement is a bit strange there. Normally a cycleway like this (parallel to a road with priority) *would* have the right of way. That gives drivers a bit of an incentive to let cyclists go first, I think.

    Wow, your fitness levels are back aren't they Mark?! Thought you did sound a bit tired towards the end there...and I kept wondering if you were staying overnight before returning or if there was a public transport route that took you and your bike home? That station reminded me of St. Pancras in London.
    I had to look at a map to discover that crenellated border between the Nederland's and Belgium. An amusing thought occurred to me: if you're coming from Belgium are the enclaves Dutch? ( I hope the subject is not sensitive, I meant the comment in good humour😊 )
    Amazing trip, I enjoyed the ride👍💚🚴

      There are patches of Dutch territory within the Belgian enclaves, so technically these can be considered Dutch enclaves. And it's not a sensitive subject at all, it is sometimes quite complicated though as the border runs right through houses so imagine your front door being in the Netherlands while your backdoor is in Belgium :)

      @@neorejbeck well that's got to feel a bit schizophrenic, how peculiar! One wonders if the houses were built on the boundary or if they just didn't care that they plonked the boundary on a house?! Bizarre, thanks, I learnt something new. 👍

    • @rutgerb
      @rutgerb Год назад

      Perhaps. In Belgium you are not obligated to clean it up. In the Netherlands it differs per region, but its rarely upheld. Horseshit has been around for ages and I guess people have accepted it.
      In cities like London and New York it did was a big problem before the car. People on here like to complain about cars but 1000s of horses on a street per day is a lot of ammonia and other nasty stuff.

      The great horse manure crisis ruclips.net/video/GmVLo0JeAlQ/видео.html
      Wiki:
      "The great horse manure crisis of 1894 refers to the idea that the greatest obstacle to urban development at the turn of the century was the difficulty of removing horse manure from the streets
      ...
      The name refers to a supposed 1894 publication in The Times, which said "In 50 years, every street in London will be buried under nine feet of manure".[3] The reasoning was that more horses are needed to remove the manure, and these horses produce more manure.
