Her Favorite Japanese Snacks - Cycling to Local Japanese Grocery Store

- What is it like grocery shopping in Japan? Today Thuong and I will be cycling to our local supermarket, Kanesue. Most people in Japan actually ride their bikes (mamachari) with built in baskets and racks to do their grocery shopping, and my wife and I are no exception.
Grocery stores change a lot depending on where you live in Japan, and there are lots of different local chains all over the country. We really like this chain because it's significantly cheaper than many of the other nearby stores, and they also have a membership program which gives you an extra 3% off on your purchases. The only bad point is it's cash only, but definitely worth it considering the savings we get.
Join along to see inside our weekly grocery store run to see all the foods that help fuel us and this channel :)

I never thought I would watch anybody shopping for groceries,
But Cruise, you make it interesting. Love your videos.
I never thought people would watch a video of me grocery shopping 😅 thanks!
That was wonderful, sometimes I just like seeing "Day in the Life" content. Great job guys.
Thanks, happy to hear that 🙂
I love how Japan keeps its money in the economy by having mostly local chains to shop at unlike North America who likes to pander to corporations who take the money out of the economy
I personally find this channel a comfort. especialy when both of them are going for shopping💕💖
-Love from the philipphines
Visiting a grocery store is a must for all travelers to Japan.
I. REALLY love and REALLY appreciate the little bits of translations you add. I’m trying to learn Japanese but I find it difficult to do. Please continue doing that in your videos
Thats what I love about Japan, I leave my bike outside Family Mart or Lawsons and no problem. I would never try that in the states. Great Video!!
Definitely a perk! Shock to the system when you go to another country though lol
It depends though. I had my Trek 400 stored in the bike area of my apartment and someone tried to take it apart and left it that way. And yes, it was locked up. Even though you live in Japan, I lock my stuff up there from experience. One of the biggest perks of Japanese grocery stores is the portion sizes and how cheap meats and veggies are (outside beef). I lends to making more home made healthy meals.
Ya, from living in two different cultures, I find many of my fellow Americans destructive and very disorderly. Any nice statue is defaced, any thing of value stolen.
Yeah in the US you'd used a better lock. Probs one of the Kryptonite locks. You can still get jacked though. That's why do you wanna go $3000 for an ebike or just go around $1000 for regular bike. But on the downside in Japan if you look in the store there is plastics everywhere, I don't know what is recyclable and where were the free range eggs???? I'm not even gonna ask about organic free range.
Cruise: You can get bread with the crust already cut off...
Me: Sweet!
Cruise: ...if you’re a small child.
Me: ...
🤣🤣🤣
You and me both.. 😒
I live in the U.S. but I am visiting family in Japan this week. As you know the cashiers take the grocery you picked out of your basket, ring up the products on the register and then put it in another basket for you to take over to the table repack the grocery's into your reusable bag. On this trip we saw that for 500 yen the grocery store sells a reusable bag you insert into second basket the cashier is loading into. When she is done you just pull a drawstring tight on the bag to secure all of the grocery's, grab the straps on this bag and off you go. No need to repack. And that bag fits nicely into the basket on the bike.
I've seen a few people doing that, but actually prefer to organize it in my bag myself 😅
Love your everyday life in japan vids cruise.👍 makes me feel homesick, even though I don't live there. Wishfull thinking I guess. 😥🙏😎🦘
Thanks Mark! These videos will probably also make us homesick if we ever leave lol
Always a Great Grocery Shopping experience in Japan.
Love the store. When I visited japan, I remember the produce looked so much better than our stores in the USA. I also remember that their milk, bread and tofu, taste so much better than ours.
I also love japanese curry, and the same brand you use.
Thank you for taking us on your trip to the supermarket. Take it easy.
They definitely go the extra mile to make the food look good. And yeah, the milk here is surprisingly good. I'm not the biggest fan of the bread here though, miss my grainy options
He:Loves her cucumber her meat
She:Smiles
Bed at home: Here we go again
Anyone else thought of Onoda's and Manami's first encounter the instant TWC picked up that Pocari Sweat??! Ha, ha.
The variety (and low cost) of prepackaged food is incredible. You'd never see those prices in the US.
This place is crazy cheap 😁
I think you have to visit the local Asian grocery stores for them thin slices of beef. The Korean stores does lots of business here in Vanc. Due to hot pot demands. See if Han Kook Meat Trading Ltd. will ship to Michigan. :-).
Korea town to the rescue! hell you can even find some stuff in China town
HKgaming, not when our Chinatown is next to the poorest zip code in Canada and not a pleasant area for any shopping. Sad given the senior citizens are now being priced out of the new buildings.
Asian stores to the rescue :)
We actually have some Japanese markets in Detroit
Love it. Enjoyed seeing you content, it simple but interesting.
Glad to hear it, thanks! :)
Great video! Thank you for sharing😀🇯🇵🌸
The viewpoint of Cruise-san is very interesting to me.
I has become aware of a new aspect of my mother country.
Thanks! :)
Really like the theme of this video. But also enjoy your cycling videos. So keep producing both :)
Glad to hear it, thanks! :)
I won first prize in a competition, from the Adam and Joe go Tokyo tv show. One of the prizes was a bag of red crabs, it was too fishy for me to eat but the dogs liked them. lol
LOL
Fantastic selection of fruit etc in that supermarket, looks really good quality
Yeah, it's a really nice selection :)
Excellent video...you guys are great together, best wishes and happiness. Big fan of your channel here! So many informative videos👍
Thanks so much!
Very nice video. It made us feel like we were right there with you 🙂
Haven't seen too many supermarkets in Japan that aren't rather plain and utilitarian on the inside. Doesn't matter though when the deli sections are so good!
Exactly
Great vid, it's interesting to see everyday life in Japan, thanks.
Glad to hear it, thanks! :)
Really liked this one, man. Good job!
Thanks!
I love Japan and Asia so much!
Thanks for the tour. Very interesting
Thanks for watching 🙂
You are really a good supermarket guide! 👍
Excellent video. Thank you for showing us.
Thanks for watching 😁
Two Wheel Cruise you’re welcome. I look forward to your next one.
Interesting. Whenever I travel I like to check out grocery stores. I love food in Japan.
Exactly, I love doing this too :)
To that lady bike we call it old grandma in Germany.. I still have on since years. Steel frame. Like all your videos. Interesting.
Thanks!
Thank you Cruise & Thuong-Chan, I have never spent so much time in my life in a supermarket to get the weekly groceries and supplies. Vey interesting experience. Can we go to a fresh market next time, please?
Those are harder for us to go to with the limited business hours during work, but will try
Real good video guys
"Cruz enjoying the fall of Japan through cheese" the real title of this video.
Thanks 👍
Love the peanut butter tip. That Skippy price is crazy high especially for half the US size! 🥜👍
Best video you ever made!
Of course the one that only takes an hour to make 🤣 not the ones that take 15+ hours 🤣
I have a Timbuk 2 messenger bag as well, love it although balance can get sketchy with it very full
It's lasted me over 10 years, great bag :) But yeah, awkward sometimes lol
Nice video! 😊🇯🇵🌸
Japanese curry rice is the best, although I could never survive in Japan without Dr. Pepper. Thanks for the video.... love Japan!
A good "everyday life " video !
Thanks! :)
Fun video! thanks for taking us along. I enjoy your videos together about life in Japan mixed with bikes. When I'm in Japan, I love going to grocery stores and seeing what's new. My wife (Japanese) usually fills one large suitcase with food to bring back. Have you tried the Kirin Salty Lychee replenishing drink? I hadn't until this summer and my ride on Sado Island. Nice change from Pocari Sweat. a touch sweeter, so it takes care of my sweet tooth urge oo. But good.
Thanks! These ones are fun to make :) It's just a normal day for us, but it's easier to film. Always try to throw in bikes as much as I can though.
Haven't tried that drink, but I see it around a lot..
@@TwoWheelCruise If they're fun and easy, keep them coming! Your food ones are fun too.
As I watch this I am think where is all this food going to go on the bikes. Waiting in anticipation.
It's really a great deal supermarket. Good for you. Try Gyomu-super sometimes. They are cheap too.
Thanks! Looks like there's one not too far away..
Oh my, yummy alert!!! I would have to go to that market with a severe case of tunnel vision ( or a shopping list), because I would be in big trouble once I got to the Nori snack aisle.
Lots of dangerous sections lol
Looks nice
Gotta have me some, Cherry Garcia Ben and Jerry’s.🤣
Good peanut butter is hard to find here in Germany. So whenever I find big bags of roasted salted peanuts on sale, I'll just make my own. Throw it all with honey in a food processor and blend it until it eventually turns into peanut butter. Then I store it in sterilized Mason jars. It's way better because there's no added BS or palm oil. It takes like 10 minutes.
Haven't done that yet, but definitely want to try one day :) Everything is better when you make it yourself :)
Just followed your strava! Hello from Singapore 👋
Cheers! :)
いっぱい買い物しましたねー!エコバックがパンパンで、全部入るかドキドキしますね^_^
全部入れないとき困る! 😂😂😂
TWC - what equipment do you use for recording these episodes especially your 4K videos?
Great video !
I wonder if there's a Walmart in Japan. It would be great if you visited it at least once lol.
Keep up the great work !
Nope, but there are a few costco's around. They're building one somewhat near us, so definitely will visit once it's finished
there is seiyu supermarket which are owned by walmart..
Love you guys
😃
Thanks for this "day in the life" type of video, very informative. Fruits are very expensive (2 to 4 times what I found this morning in our local market near Paris, and that was a cheap store. On the other hand, the rest of the food looked cheap. Too much packaging and plastic is also striking me. I guess this is cultural.
Sums it up about right, expensive produce and overuse of plastic.. Most everything else is good though :)
Brave man eating that spider-web Natto. lol! Down here the big chain is "Aeon"
It's really good once you get used to it 🙂
We've got a bunch of those too, but this is cheaper for most items
Hey Cruise, thank you for showing some local costumes like the food in this video, I would like to make a request :) please do spell more things in japanese, I liked when you spoke mikan, kabocha, ringo, momo, sakana, tsumami etc. to compare the names in english and japanese
Thanks Pedro! I'll try to do more of that when I can :)
19:20 alright cruise steady there mate XD
haha 😂
Do you have Lawson stores in that part of Japan? That chain started in northeastern Ohio, where I grew up. They were a convenience store, kind of the 7-11 of their day. Through a series of corporate rearrangements, the same name and logo are used in Japan, though the stores are long gone from Ohio. This memorable TV commercial was ubiquitous back in the day: ruclips.net/video/gjZary6bbm8/видео.html
Lawson's are everywhere here.. I sometimes get my amazon orders shipped to a nearby one for pickup on my way home. I had no idea they were originally from Ohio.. I don't think I ever saw one before, and I grew up in MI and passed through Ohio a lot..
You need a mamachari to share the load. Hey a visit to a Cainz Home or D2 would be cool.
Hard to find one my size :/ But would like to get one..
6312 yen = about $58 USD Food seems expensive.
Oh boy, I’ve been binging on your videos since the lockdown. I need to get a life 🤔, oh well 😃
The problem I have with the whole of Asia is the amount of plastic packaging used, and they single serve sizes are small... so packing per unit of product is HUGE. But I suppose it hinders over-eating so Japanese stay thin and more healthy
It's go on a be nice video.
You know a place is expensive when you are happy for a 3% discount hahaha
Why does the price go up when you buy more of something. Like the noodles?
Because if you buy 100 of them you can re-sell them, when the price goes up there goes yours "profit" as well. Not only in Japan seen that in other country as well
Wow, you get the huge super nearby! Is this the cheapest super around there?
Somethings look cheaper compared to the cheapest super in Tokyo.
Yes, it's by far the cheapest one around here and believe my I've price compared just about everything and every nearby supermarket. It's actually just medium sized, there are some other bigger ones around.
@@TwoWheelCruise that's nice! The cheapest one I can find in Tokyo is OK Super Store. There are three branches not far from my house. Even though they are the same super, somehow they sell the things differently (for example, different origin of pork). The medium size super in Nagoya is so huge!!!
To be fair I'm technically in a suburb outside of Nagoya, so there's a lot more space compared to the inner city
B!M!C! is Good!
野菜炒め is also good
Red bean bun, super cheap. Bagus!
reason to love Japan: sweet tooth
Great place if you're 甘党
What flavors of Doritos are popular there?
Strange how you usually save when you buy in bulk (where i'm from anyway). but in japan it seems as if you're penalised for buying too many of the same product and increase the price. i had never heard of that, fascinating.
Yeah, I'm curious what the reasoning is behind it is. Doesn't seem to benefit the company directly
So much plastic!
These stores do not have a fresh bread department? It is so nice over here to get a freshly baked product still warm from the oven if you come at the right time.
Those prepackaged noodles are so cheap! I can buy them per 2 for like 200-300 yen if I convert it. And they only sell 1 kind of tofu here :(
There's no fresh bread department in any supermarket here really. Sometimes there will be a small bakery nearby, but lots of individually wrapped pre-made bread options..
Is everything wrapped in plastic?
Pretty much 😥
God bless 😁
🙂
Why does it cost more each
if you want to buy more?
Not sure, but someone suggested it was to prevent reselling
Can you get roasted peanuts? that and a blender and you have peanut butter
Need to try that one day..
Always go for the premium banana and the big peaches
that's what she said
big spender ;)
Dont be afraid of sugar. Its just a nutrient
😬 I'm more afraid of my addiction to it
300_Grams Oats for about 2.75$. Are they Gold Coated or what :)
LOL, you still get Zima?
why is almost everything's price end up at 7yen?.....
19:57 Could this be the Japanese version of Marmite? 😃
except it's delicious, super cheap and really healthy for you. 😉
6:06 笑
15:32 the lady in the back kinda look like thuong-chan
That's Thuong-chan! There is a mirror!😁
I like Vermant curry.
It's good stuff
im to cheap to pay them prices i would have to add some more fasting days
My wife would not allow that 🤣
Grocery shopping on a bike... Officially called "Quaxing". Going shopping using any means other than a car! It is named after a local New Zealand Politician Dick Quax (said quacks). He said he couldn't understand why anyone wouldn't use a car to go shopping in context of providing alternatives other than using a car in Auckland. The phrase was originally a dig at him and his out of touch attitude and has now been picked up. Great irony! Cool quaxing!
Hmm, he obviously never experienced the horrors of Japanese traffic lights 🤣
Fully stacked lasagna! Got any in that store? LIKE if you are team Pew the Swede
Don't think so, lasagna is pretty rare here..
So much plastic. Does japan have any decent recycle program?
Do you know where the fruit & veg is grown?
What? no helmets? jk
Do you ever feel naked without a helmet whenever you go riding your bike? I'm so used to wearing a helmet now that if I don't have a helmet on while riding a bike, I feel naked lol; so strange.
and YAY, the mamachari made its cameo again. \o/
Yes and no. I feel nervous without it for anything longer than a few km, but feel fine not using it for local shopping trips. Especially since we usually take it slow on the sidewalks and it's only a few min away.
I find that drivers actually tend to be nice and more cautious around more pedestrian looking cyclists on city bikes in regular clothes with no helmets, so I actually feel safer in a way without it ironically
I remember GCN had a video about a study that showed drivers give more space to less safely-attired cyclists. Not that that’s recommended, but it is something to think about.
Soo much plastmass :/ thought japanese people were more careful with this, ewen in Georgia we have less in supermarkets probably depends on region of Japan and yes prices are soo low :D
Do either of you eat out of those vending machines....?
Nope
is not safe if she bike with along skirt like that, the skirt can go trough the gear..
All That fruit must be unripe
Maybe you would give the $ prices also so much junk food surely,Do you have time to buy and cook fresh vegetables ?.
Not really since we both work a lot, but Thuong still cooks most days :)
OMFG! Frozen fried rice wrapped in plastic. Aduh! Sesuatu dari setan.
YOU LOVE ICECREAM BUT YOU ARE NOT FAT …..I AM JEALOUS
Never cared for the automatic cashiers! Prefer human ones!
I miss being able to have conversations with cashiers :(
