Maybe it is my age (72), but her abhorrent reaction to Murray's proposal should have been a non-negotiable for him. She didn't even look at the ring, even when he asked her "don't you even want to look at the ring?" after leaving the restaurant. He chose and purchased a ring he believed she would love, planned the dinner, involved the waitstaff in the proposal via ring/cake for dessert and all she could focus on was her lactose intolerance issue and making a scene in front of strangers which was intended to publicly shame him when she didn't even eat the cake - not a single bite. Rather than focus on the man who obviously loves her and wants to marry her, she was already comparing his brother's proposal to his and letting him know how lacking he was in meeting *her* expectations of a proposal. This gal is always going to compare Murray to his brother and (maybe) SIL, she is always going to want more, expect more, demand more and demean him when it doesn't meet her outlandish expectations. I would not put it past her to do something at his brother's wedding to ruin it/the day just so anything she plans for her own wedding will top theirs. Then to fake tears with her 'maybe' future MIL and complain to her about her own sons - not just the bf, but his brother as well, is beyond audacious, shameful and ridiculous. Murray's life, and the rest of his family, is going to be a roller coaster of trying to please her just to keep peace in the family. Family gatherings of any kind will always have drama, chaos, uncomfortableness and cringe wondering what she's going to do or say next because she will always make herself the center of attention no matter how outlandish she has to behave to accomplish her goal. Murray isn't the love of *her* life: *she* is the love of *her* life and that man is never, ever going to be a priority in her life and, in her eyes, he's never, ever going to measure up. He's always going to be striving to keep her happy, but she is never going to be satisfied. Murray made the right decision in going to his parents' home to be alone and think things through, but in my "old lady" opinion, he didn't make any progress: he regressed. I am hoping for his sake she does something so horrendous, or says something so intolerable, he ends it with her completely.

You also gave the audience clarification that even if the proposal were inexpensive but personal that it may not have been good enough. But no, Murray, no! You had the right idea before! Don’t look at texts from your partner during a fight!
“You’re focusing on the proposal and not the marriage” is such an important statement. It can also be said about focusing on the wedding and not the marriage. Life is long (if we are lucky) and we should care more for the long term lifetime commitment and not about having one perfect day.

Oh god. So glad my daughter not a bridezilla. She compromised with her future wife. My daughter wanted registry office and lunch with max 20 peeps. Her fiance wanted a wedding wedding. They are having a garden wedding at home. Very chill.
