    I have the Pocket 6K now and I'm quite happy with it. I know eventually, I want to go into the RED or Arri ecosystem in the near future, but man, your work is amazing. What's really cool, is that I couldn't really tell a huge difference between your work with the Pocket 6K and the Komodo which speaks to your talent and eye. Someone could give you a toaster oven to shoot on and I'm sure the footage would still be dope. Good music choice as well during the talking head portion.

      @@eladbari I think the “red ecosystem” isn’t so much of a thing anymore because DSMC3 cameras have a lot more 3rd party accessories :) With DSMC2 cams you had to pretty much buy Red everything and pay an extra $10k just to get your cam up and running 😢 But that’s becoming less of a thing, which is exciting!

    Btw, the 16 bit linear in Red cameras is the same amount of data as 12 bit log in Arri/Blackmagic, just packaged in a different way.
    Would like to hear more about the dynamic range differences between the BM6K and the Komodo, most tests I’ve seen have them as nearly identical. Have you found the Komodo easier to grade?

    • @LukeHolliday
      @LukeHolliday  3 года назад +2

      That's interesting! I'll definitely look into that more!
      I did notice a dynamic range difference between the pocket6k and the Komodo. I also watched all those tests (which is why I was skeptical about the Komodo in the first place), but once I got my hands on the camera and used it in different scenarios, that's when I noticed the difference. And I would say the Komodo is definitely easier to grade. It can handle more pushing and pulling with the colors than BMPCC6k footage can.
      If it's not technically getting more color data than Blackmagic cams, I'm super curious as to what makes it so good! Like what makes Red footage what it is? Any ideas?

    • @mikenicholas8375
      @mikenicholas8375 3 года назад +4

      @@LukeHolliday Same here! I went from BMPCC4K (obviously a different sensor than the 6k) but the RED Raw can handle way more latitude than the BRAW. @@mikenicholas8375 ahh that makes sense! Yeah I never got too in the weeds with the technical stuff, but all I know is that the Red footage feels much better, like there’s more to it than what you get out of pocket cams

      It’s a different codec so the colour science is different and I think you would notice that. And with a couple extra stops of DR you will also see the color in a more pleasing context too. However the Ursa 4.6k g2 has 15 stops of DR so it’s probably the best comparison to the Komodo.

I still feel I didn't squeeze out every drop of quality from Blackmagic. This 12 vs 16 bit raw is rabbit hole though... some say the image you'll get will 12 bit no matter what. We have had many cameras from Blackmagic, Sony, Canon, Panasonic, but as a film purist, I enjoy the cinematic "it" factor that the sensors from a RED or Arri possess. In our workflow, lighting and precise setup is an expectation, so a camera like the Komodo is perfect for us. I do some sports shoots as well, and when that is the case, I pretty much use only the mirrorless variety body types.

      to get the global shutter (which i think is a very important feature) you're gonna pay $6k for either the Komodo or the Z-Cam. So with that said, I'd go Komodo for a variety of reasons:
      - The famous RED color science
      - Depending on the industry, there are benefits to owning a RED camera and studios are familiar with the image quality and thus it opens doors to more work (seriously)
      - The aftermarket support is greater for the Komodo

    Hey, just had a question on what is your workflow for grading your Red Komodo footage?
    Also when working with red files have you had any problems in Preimere Pro (If your using that software)?

    • @LukeHolliday
      @LukeHolliday  3 года назад

      Hey! I always edit in premiere, and then round trip through Davinci Resolve for color. I do a combination of LUTs, color space transform, and primaries adjustments. I'm also a big fan of resolve's glow effect, and I also use their film grain :)
      I've never had any issues in premiere! The only thing to be aware of is that you have to import the footage through the media browser in premiere. If you just drag and drop it from file explorer, .r3d files won't import correctly. But the footage itself runs really smooth!

      @@LukeHolliday I've had some recent problems in Premiere with Red raw footage, footage would go to black and would have to restart Premiere.

    What lens(es) do you use with Komodo? I saw a lot of footage with green tint ( chromatic abberation) on edges. What do you think of it? Is it lens issue or Komodo sensor? Do you notice any green chromatic abberation in your footage?

    • @LukeHolliday
      @LukeHolliday  3 года назад +1

      I use a lot of different lenses! In this video, I used the Sigma 18-35. I've also used the Vazen anamorphics, DZO Vespid primes, and Zeiss super speeds. I haven't noticed any chromatic abberation with those! The only time I've noticed any is with the DZO Pictor zooms. I got some purple and green in high contrast areas.

    How do you satisfy your needs for high frame rates with the Komodo?

    • @LukeHolliday
      @LukeHolliday  3 года назад

      Great question. I don’t really have any high frame rate needs, which is why I think the Komodo’s great for me, but it might not be good for someone who shoots a lot of high speed stuff. If I ever had a project come my way that absolutely needed 120fps or higher, I’d just rent a Sony probably :)

    Great video man! Just sold my Komodo and went back to a A7S3. I have to some but disagree with your opinion about a videographer and a DOP. Being a videographer you can use either or camera and it would do the same thing minus some technical specs that usually don't matter or is even noticed by the viewer. I've been a DOP on quite a few short films and used my Ursa Mini 4.6K, Sony A7S2, RED Raven, RED Komodo and now back to my A7S3. What I learned is that no one hires you for the gear you have or even use it's your ability to understand what tools are needed to get the job done. I never predicate what I create on a camera but the understanding I have about how the image is captured. There is people I know personally that still use the 5D Mark II and no matter what they shoot it comes out exactly how they want.
    We have so much tech now that even the simplest cameras can produce at a professional level. Anyways phenomenal page and stellar work man. Really can appreciate great cinematography when I see it. Great information and hell of a channel man! Definitely subbed!

    The 16 stops of DR isn't accurate. We all know that. Don't fall for marketing hype.

    • @LukeHolliday
      @LukeHolliday  3 года назад +1

      When I said 16bit, I was talking about the color bit depth, not dynamic range. Those are 2 separate things.
      But yeah I totally agree! I don’t like using numbers to assess dynamic range, since ARRI is king of dynamic range and they only claim 14 stops.
      I feel like you have to really put a camera to the test (shoot and grade) to get a true feel for how it performs.

    • @glennparker8247

      @@LukeHolliday my bad. For some reason I thought you said 16 stops of DR. Don't get me wrong, I love the komodo as well but a lot of people really believe the 16 stops claim.
