Interesting thing is when I was 25 years old, this would have sounded like meaningless talk to me. Now at 52, this is eventually where every drummer should arrive. Build (who you are ) from the ground up. Erskine is the man.

Good comment. There's a reason Neil Peart chose Erskine to teach him.

He's a natural born teacher. I saw him at clinic way way back in 1983 in Trenton NJ. I still use a lot of things he taught to this day.

He speaks the truth. It takes many years of playing to get your confidence to the level of being able to play simple. Even then when you are playing something "complex" it really doesn't feel that way. Complexity is all relative. Groove and taste take precedence over everything else in my opinion. What an inexperienced player doesn't realize is that what he views as complex is very simple to a master who has spent years working at it. Its all about taste and groove. "Chops" will come from practice and years of playing. Don't think complex. Just work at it everyday and you will progress. You WILL get better. Enjoy the journey. If you are committed you will spend your life improving. That is where the real enjoyment is. In the work.

Simple drumming with taste and good internal time on the part of the drummer is so important. This is what all drummers should learn soon after they begin playing.Thank you Mr. Erskin for saying that so well.

Building the foundation: Erskine wisdom...50 years of musical experience to say, "Less is best" "Play time and groove" in a humble way. We can all hear those drummers in our head as he speaks who seem bent on throwing in everything lick they have practiced. Try the 1, 3, 5 min exercise...same beat NO FILLS

Erskine is speaking to the drummer being subservient to the Music, as everyone should be. So why doesn't this transfer to everything we hear from even alot of experienced great players? EGO!

Peter Erskine plays simple, but he can also play very complex as he showed. What happens if you practice simple and play simple, and there's comes a moment where you have to show some chops or licks and you don't have them at your disposal? I totally agree with playing simple but you have to be ready for all the other complex stuff when the opportunity arises.

It's funny but as with so many things, until you are ready to 'hear' this advice (which is spot on), it all sounds like nonsense. Part of maturing as a drummer, and as a human.
