- In this video, I demonstrate king salmon fishing on Anchorage's Ship Creek. If you want to go salmon fishing in Anchorage Alaska, you don't have many choices. Grab your pole and head down to Ship Creek. You won't be the only one fishing Ship Creek, but the chance to catch a king conveniently close to Anchorage shouldn't be passed up. Awesome video! Coming up for a week, what rod, reel, and line setup should I bring to Ship Creek? I typically fish light setups in the Southern California Surf so wondering if what I have is weak sauce. 😂. Looks like it might be close.
Thanks for watching! If you will be there when kings are in (mid June - 1st July) you'll want a substantial rod (see my reply to Aloha grinds for my exact setup.) However I've seen people land really big kings on a Walmart ugly stick so it depends on your skill. Most kings range from 15-30lbs so that should give you some indication. If you are going up later then it will be silvers and pinks which range from 3-10 lbs which your gear should easily handle. Hope that helps.

I see more fish lost on the netting than any other time on ship creek. Sometimes people are successful despite their best efforts!
Hello..when is salmon season there ?
King salmon run starts roughly mid June and then sockeye (not on ship creek) in early July followed by silvers late July into August. However within these time frames there are definitely some weeks that are better than others. The Best way to plan a trip is to decide on where specifically you want to go and then Google the run timing for those specific rivers. If you are still deciding where to go, I do have a video about the fishable waters in the Anchorage area. If you make it out there I hope you have good luck!

@Crypto Currency there should be silver salmon around. Places I would research more are susitna river tributaries (willow, montana etc), bird creek, Russian river, and Kenai streams like anchor and deep creeks. If you have a little money to spend, a short hop across the cook inlet in a float plane can be some of the best fishing in the area.

@Crypto Currency if there are fish in the river, there will be bears. I've carried both firearm and pepper spray. It requires less skill to effectively use pepper spray than a firearm. However, you can't fly with pepper spray so it kinda seems like a waste throwing it away if you don't have to use it. You also have to explain to fish and game if you end up shooting a bear which can be a really big deal
2-4 ounce weight is overkill no?
I've tried to use lighter weights and they just end up rolling down the river. You need enough weight that your bait stays put
Dont go past the overpass over Fish and Game will get ya!
They watch the area like hawks for sure. Don't fish outside of allowed hours either. Almost learned that on the hard way.
Why is it heartbreaking to release fish
You have to work pretty hard for these fish and they are delicious so release is always bitter sweet. Losing on before you can land it is definitely a rough moment in the life of a fisherman
Can you recommend the type rod and reel for this spot ?
Great question, I should have mentioned that. I am using a medium heavy 7 foot two piece 15-40 lb rod I got upsold on at Sportsmans in Anchorage. Didn't want to possibly miss the fish of a lifetime, but it has been a good rod. For a reel I have a Quantum Optics 60 with 30 lb braided line. If you were going to chase kings at low tide most people use a 10 weight fly rod. With that being said, I watched one elderly gentleman fishing next to me a couple of years ago successfully land a king every day for a week using an Ugly stick with a walmart reel. Hope that helps.

Here's an observation: You will see a lot of bargain rod and reel setups when "community fishing". And people put them to good use. When you fish in other stream environments, meaning outside the city, the quality of tackle usually goes way up. The correlation makes sense to me.
