Fray we should not stand in a hole and swing flys and beads threw there lol you do the same dang thing in a lot of your videos have a fly with split shot almost five feet in front of it and you throw and swing your just special
Austin, you make a fair point, I'm going to pin your comment so people can see my response, and the story of how I got into all this. When I first got seriously into river fishing at age 13-15 I almost exclusively fly fished (all the time, not just for salmon). I had an old timer teach me the "chuck and duck " split shot- long leader- two fly rig at a popular dam , and I used it to hook a few fish. Noone ever mentioned flossing to me, just how hard the fish will slam black yarn and subtle nymph patterns that I now realize those fish can hardly see. After using this method awhile and getting a few negative responses to videos about flossing, I realized quickly. The technique was all about presenting in a way that put a sweeping horizontal leader in a fishes mouth. The flies used had nothing to do with it, as long as the hook point is exposed it will result in a head shaking fish. Once I realized this, I discovered with the right technique and long leadered rig I could hook any fish that were in front of me, in the mouth, with ease. I would argue I got pretty good at it! Everyone around me on the rivers was doing it And it was fun, but the negative comments I got from serious fisherman continued. I loved fly fishing so much I didn't want to give it up, so I switched to fishing streamer flies, which got me visible strikes and restored my faith in fly fishing. However, once I learned to fish skein and hardware my confidence in getting legitimate bites on a fly setup faded quickly. That's why all my more recent videos are skein and hardware based, with the exception of streamer cohos where I have shown tons of evidence that they bite. I have removed a few older videos where some blatant flossing was occurring, even if I wasn't fully aware at the time. I have mixed feelings about the technique, especially since it is by far the most widely used method on every great lakes trib. It is super effective and leads to action packed fun. I don't want to alienate or villainize those who do it. I think it should be all about intention and if you know that you aren't attempting to get bites from fish, it is a bit shady to be targeting them. But I get why it is so popular, and yes I was once an active and enthusiastic participant in the "chuck and duck" "bottom bouncing" fly fishing community!

Awesome message about realistic expectation. Had a buddy of mine guide me on my first ever salmon and centerpin experience and hooked into over 12 fish, with 3 landed. Since then I've been going on solo outings, and out of 4 trips, only hooked into 4 fish with 0 landed (all of which were in 1 trip). You can't win every time, but I know that I just gotta put in the hours and effort and it'll eventually pay off.

Yes theres a group of local angler's that would rather the flossers keep flossing as long as they stay out of their preferred spots.. personally I think an overall increase in respect for the fish would be better for everyone
I used to yank holes (a.k.a. flossing) because that is how I was taught. I was pretty good at it too so it took me a while to get into float fishing. Been fishing Chinook in Michigan and Wisconsin rivers for 22 years. I got into bobber fishing a few years ago and now that is all I do. That is the only way I want to fish Chinook now. I went up last week. Didn't fish to hard except for one day. I landed 11 out of 15 hookups (2 of which were foul hooked so I pulled on purpose). In the chuck and duck days, landing ratio was about 1 for 6 hookups. Sure you don't get as many hookups but you land a lot more fish, the fight is more fun too because you can turn fish when hooked in the mouth and keep them out of the lumber yard. I even built my own spiral wrapped baitcaster rod specifically for Kings. It's an absolute whooping stick. I can't get enough of the bobber fishing.
Have you ever tried Flatfish lures for steelhead? I have had tremendous luck with them in Indiana and in the Erie PA area. They have a slow wobble movement that is irresistible to steelhead. In clear water a size 7 in the Perch Scale pattern works well. In muddy water either a chartreuse or bright pink pattern works well. You can add split shot about 18 to 20 in above the lure to adjust for water depth. If you try one, crank it just fast enough to make the lure wobble. Slower is always better. The real thrill is when the strike happens; they just about pull the rod out of your hands. Cabela's usually has a pretty good selection available on line. Don't buy them with the spreader hook option. Just get them with a single treble at the rear. The Flatfish don't work well in really fast water, but are great in anything else.
Always a tuff choice in deciding what tackle is appropriate for the fish your chasing! You want a good 😊 fight, but if not keeping your fish you don't want to kill it in a prolonged fight!! Tuff to decide!!
Right on Fray! Back in 2006 I put 4 "snaggers" to shame as I went 4 for 40 at tippy dam. Ran flies through a pod of fish, watched most of them bite. The snagging crew,4 guys, dragged in 1 out of 9 "hook ups". My pole was bent over 90% of the day,but I had a blast.
I have personally swung, bottom bounced, and outright stripped in streamers and other flys and have watched not only coho but kings slam them in clear water. It’s a matter of pissing them off enough to get them to bite
I fish Steelhead in the spring, use same techniques, at tippy I was undergunned, using 12 lb leader and 14 lb mainline( mono). Couldn't turn most salmon back upstream, but watching line peel was great. Most fly patterns work, atlas Mike's egg flies worked except pea green. Could watch fish open mouth most drifts, match flow of water drift properly.

When I first started fishing for salmon, I was on the first bend of a popular stream and wasn’t having any luck. Watching guys hook up drift after drift with flies was defeating but sticking with it eventually paid off. I’ve never went 3 for 45 like some but I’ve never been a snagger either lol

I have tried spinners for salmon and steelhead I just never had any luck. I have to admit it is fun to see you catch on that spinner! Keep up the good work!
I been watching you since you started and you are doing a great job. I also chase salmon and use fly and spinning in the harbors. Some people will never believe that those fish bite. Great message to people who want to try it. I still enjoy flying most and a few fish per day is definitely what if realistic. Keep doing what you do and would love to see you using flies again. There is a clear difference fishing and floasing. Thanks for videos each season.
Love your videos and passion. I have been trying to find the arctic spinner since I seen you first introduce the lure. I CANNOT find it. Where can I find one to purchase? Please, share a link.
People just don’t understand the feeling of the bite, it’s CRAZY fun. I use spawn bags a lot because I just make my own but sadly last year people were snagging so much that the fish wouldn’t want to bite. Had success this year early run with them smashing the spawn bags thankfully.

Awesome Frays! I'll be hitting the river too this weekend, good to see that they are biting! I'll be using the same tactics myself. The offer still stands to get in contact with me for a free campsite to fish the area.
Good on you Fray for trying to change the snagging culture of river salmon fishing. I live on the west coast and it's the same in California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska! I think it's mostly just greed and laziness that causes it. It's SO prevalent, especially where king salmon congregate that I don't know if using reason and trying to teach will be effective? Keep up the good fight!
Fray I'm from San Diego and have been wanting to plan a trip to Michigan to fish some rivers and creeks like in this video. I'm a lover of rivers and streams being my father is from PA so lake fishing is bland to me. If you could not exact spots but what are some great river systems to point me in the direction to fish? Thank you in advance fellow fisherman
Hey Fray I’ve been watching your videos for a while I’m still a beginner. I have bought like 7 arctic spinners where should I fish on the river. I’m trying to get on my first salmon this season. I live in Michigan. I’d love some helpful advice.
I've been wanting to head up to Michigan to try for these salmon but I have no clue what access looks like up there... been looking at the southern salmon rivers like the grand but I can't seem to find any access lol
I have used 7ft medium action spinning rods in the past. Now I am using a 10 foot Medium heavy and love it. It's from blood run tackle but not available yet on the site
You should come to Washington and fish with addicted fishing. It was cool when the came and fishes with you but it would be really cool if you went to there neck of the woods to. And as always killer video bro
Spinning reel is a pflueger president 35, spinning rod is a rod from blood run tackle that should be available soon. Centerpin rod and reel are linked in the description. Thanks for watching !
@@FishFray gottcha. That makes sense. Wasn’t sure if I was missing something. Got my first king yesterday floating a bead and it was awesome. Do you run straight braid for the spinners or are you using a leader? I figure if they are so aggressive they are chomping those spinners then the line probably isn’t gonna scare them off but I’m curious to know your thoughts.
If you order online this time of year they wont come in time for the season. And any shops that do have them will be sold out of good colors! It's definitely best to stock up before the season starts..
@@FishFray yeah I been trying man. I was banking on my low key little shop to have some but the odds were against me. That’s fine. I got my float setup and bait. Been at it for a while this season now with much success! Guess I’ll have to order up. However steelhead season this year is gonna be a massacre, almost feel bad ;)
@@FishFray I'm from erie,pa. The steelhead alley state, also owner of a baitshop, im looking to go to Michigan to fish for salmons, any pointers on where to go and what river or streams. Or where I can possibly meet you .
Thanks for all your videos through the years, I've learned a ton. Two questions. Do you notice a difference early/mid/late run in relation to skein vs spinner bites...or does it really vary more day by day or in different holes? Do these more respectable methods work in the higher pressure areas like homestead or tippy, or is it really only suited for quieter areas (which is more enjoyable but not always an option)
I haven't noticed any real trend to be honest. Some days the skein is hot (like in this video) and other days the bobber bite is dead but they are chasing spinners. Both of these methods do work in high pressure areas, I make videos showing that, I am right in the action with everyone else. However those areas require more patience, those fish won't always hit in the first few drifts , in my experience. Don't let pressure scare you from trying to fish legitimately! But of course , nothing bites better than a fresh run king that has not seen a fisherman before ..
@@FishFray thanks so much for taking the time for a thorough answer. Heading up in a week and a half for my only trip this year. Later than I prefer, but with this weather it just may work out. Thanks again
To make your point, I fished that same bend from the other bank with skein for half an hour with no luck and turned it around after switching to a spinner. Just the opposite of your day.
Great message man! But don’t kid yourself into thinking that guides in boats don’t floss the shit out of the salmon! Not all of them do , but it’s fairly common.
Not so many salmon( coho&chinooks) are planted in the grand anymore but they are available. Coming upstream you have g.r. ,the rogue, lowell,, Lyons, webber, grand ledge, then up into Lansing area. Not sure about dams and fish ladders there. Steelhead do better in the spring, but start coming in behind the salmon. Fish are in the system all winter.

I started fishing for salmon when I was 11 in downtown Grand Rapids
My Father was a snagger from the 70s
I’ve watched the culture change so much throughout the years and I can’t tell you how glad I was to see snagging done away with at Tippy and the Marquette
I’ve been a part of all the Salmon fishing techniques and cultures
I appreciate that you have a willingness to show some insight and let people catch on rather than a judgment about how they fish
I’ll be be 53 on the 21st of Sept
I’ve lived in Georgia for 30 years but still make the trip regularly to the Betsie The Platte and make my last stop my spot In the Grand
My favorite hookups are on spinners and I’ve gone 2-3 day trips a couple times empty The Chuck and duck is a fond memory of 15-20 hookup’s and landing 1 or 2 fish
I was 11 when I started 24 when I landed my first King
25 landed my first Steelhead
Then I killed it when I was in my 30s if there were fish I was catching them
My limit was the most important thing
Now I’m back where I started but if I get 1 slamming hit out of a 3 day trip I’m good till the next season

Awesome Frays! I'll be hitting the river too this weekend, good to see that they are biting! I'll be using the same tactics myself. The offer still stands to get in contact with me for a free campsite to fish the area.
I have to work this weekend unfortunately, good luck!
Probobly wont get out this season but I have a new BER spinning reel a BOOM that i am dying to try on kings.
Awesome!
When do u think they will be in the bestie river running good I'm going over there next week
Next week there should be at least a few around !
well put fray good job
Way to go fray. Very well said. Education and expectations are the key. Nice work 👏
That's how I see it too, thanks
Good on you Fray for trying to change the snagging culture of river salmon fishing. I live on the west coast and it's the same in California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska! I think it's mostly just greed and laziness that causes it. It's SO prevalent, especially where king salmon congregate that I don't know if using reason and trying to teach will be effective? Keep up the good fight!
That's too bad! I'm not sure education will solve the problem either, I certainly haven't seen much change so far
Love me that Taylor rd spot hahahaha
what river is this?
The only reason they won’t bite is if it’s too warm
Low and or clear
Or if someones snagged them
I had a nice silver buck smoooke my bag the other day
Good job my boss❤️👍
Thanks for the tips
Fray I'm from San Diego and have been wanting to plan a trip to Michigan to fish some rivers and creeks like in this video. I'm a lover of rivers and streams being my father is from PA so lake fishing is bland to me. If you could not exact spots but what are some great river systems to point me in the direction to fish? Thank you in advance fellow fisherman
Muskegon, Pere Marquette, grand and platte rivers are all big systems that offer fantastic fishing for just about anything you want to fish for
Manistee river is another good one
Quick question,Do spawn sacs work good for catching Chinook salmon?
They can! I have not used them much compared to skein chunks though
God I've been dying for another spinner video! lol. Almost our time in the big WNY. Waiting for you to do a trip up here to get some more Kings!
It would be awesome , someday!
@@FishFray you wanna do that one day hit me up i got you dude.
Hey Fray I’ve been watching your videos for a while I’m still a beginner. I have bought like 7 arctic spinners where should I fish on the river. I’m trying to get on my first salmon this season. I live in Michigan. I’d love some helpful advice.
Fish are spread out up and downstream in all of our NW Michigan tributaries at this point in the season
What spinners do you suggest for steelhead?
I like a Mepps #3 in gold or chrome
I've been wanting to head up to Michigan to try for these salmon but I have no clue what access looks like up there... been looking at the southern salmon rivers like the grand but I can't seem to find any access lol
Try 6th st dam downtown grand rapids. Lots of pressure though
@@freetimeoffshore3157 thats a good starting point for sure! Thanks mate 👍
@@crazywormy5869 gonna Google maps that and see where it takes me... thanks mate
@@crazywormy5869 I like the sound of that! Thanks for the info!
We have great access in Michigan. Parks , boat launches, and road crossings are all good places to start.. good luck !
Great video!
Have you ever used nightcrawlers and had success?
I have not tried using worms for salmon
What rod would you recommend to use for casting lures? I know you mentioned it before but I just can't find the video
I have used 7ft medium action spinning rods in the past. Now I am using a 10 foot Medium heavy and love it. It's from blood run tackle but not available yet on the site
I love your videos bro! They the best
Thanks !
@@FishFray no worries man keep up the great vids!!
Let me know when you get another spinner I ordered some in mid august and still havent gotten them.
The guy who makes them is absolutely slammed this time of year, however I bet you will get them soon!
@@FishFray we should invest in that company and scale it in the Great Lakes region and PNW. Supply and demand lol
You should come to Washington and fish with addicted fishing. It was cool when the came and fishes with you but it would be really cool if you went to there neck of the woods to.
And as always killer video bro
Someday!
What is the rod and reel setup are you using in the video
Spinning reel is a pflueger president 35, spinning rod is a rod from blood run tackle that should be available soon.
Centerpin rod and reel are linked in the description.
Thanks for watching !
Curious why you put snagging and double bead rig in the same category in your PSA?
Its all about intention, I said dragging double beads through the bottom of a hole.
I run 20 lb fluoro leaders, not sure if it effects the bite or not !
Nice video dude👍
Thanks man!
Where do you find your arctics these days? My shops don’t carry them anymore :/
When we going Fray? I’ll trade fishing trips for a day! River salmon for Saginaw Bay walleye?
Ha, do you ice fish? I'm pretty busy this fall but you can shoot me an email frayd@ferris.edu
Do you think they’ll be running in Wisconsin yet? Debating on making a 4 hour trip this weekend
I'm not sure ! Probably
I hope they will be in the bestie good next week that's when I'm going there
@@xxhelldemon91xx52 I’m probably gonna head up and fish around Milwaukee. Never fished for them so ig we’ll see what happens 🤷♂️
Crazy you’re using a pin I can’t imagine fighting those timber savages on a drag less reel
It's not the easiest way to get them out for sure but it's what I am most comfortable with !
Where do you fish for this fray, im coming up for Michigan to fish kings, been watching you since you were a young child getting your first fly rod.
I fish all Western Lake Michigan tribs in my videos, different rivers each video. Thank you for supporting my channel !
@@FishFray I'm from erie,pa. The steelhead alley state, also owner of a baitshop, im looking to go to Michigan to fish for salmons, any pointers on where to go and what river or streams. Or where I can possibly meet you .
R u using braided line sounds like it?
Yes I run 40lb braid on my spinning reels
Very nice
You are completely right I truly think they will bite in the river
Just gotta believe!
Good 👍
Thanks for all your videos through the years, I've learned a ton.
@@jeremykenward3082 I think that will be a great time to be up, good luck!
To make your point, I fished that same bend from the other bank with skein for half an hour with no luck and turned it around after switching to a spinner. Just the opposite of your day.
I hooked onto a huge king yesterday but it spit the hook
Great message man! But don’t kid yourself into thinking that guides in boats don’t floss the shit out of the salmon! Not all of them do , but it’s fairly common.
Ha, I hear you there.
Is this northern michigan or southern?
Northern
I am chompin at the bit to get out there and get on em 😭
Great video! I’m in Lansing, anybody know of any spots near by that might have some salmon 👀
6th Street dam in grand rapids
Hit the grand. Coho make it to Lansing, try webber,Lyons ionia,Lowell, dt gr 6th st dam.
