Remote & restless
США
Добавлен 25 апр 2022
I love remote and lonely places. Join this novice as I build my Alaska homestead and hike, camp, fish, hunt and explore the most remote places I can find. My restless soul is sure to find joy in overcoming obstacles, challenges and fear as I begin this new and unknown chapter. Join me in this journey where the only destination is around the next bend, but each step brings adventure and hard won experience. This story isn't about fancy gear, knowing all the answers, never failing or building an expensive home. Instead it is about the power of wild and natural places to fill the human heart.
I'm not ready, but winter's here
Winter is here on our Alaska homestead, and while we had hoped to be more prepared, life didn't turn out that way. We moved to southeast Alaska to simplify and refocus our lives in the beautiful wilderness, but this winter could test our resolve. Fall has had many unexpected setbacks, and we have so many unfinished projects. We're doing our best to adapt and push through the challenges, but it won't be easy and it is likely to be a rough winter. We're determined to make it through, and the Alaska wilderness is likely to remind us what is really important in life.

YOU don't have to be rich to homestead: If only I had known 30 years ago

My Alaska homestead journey has cost me a lot of money. People think of homesteading as a frugal way to live. I've put nearly every penny I own into my homestead and still don't have a house, but there is a better way I wish I would have known about 30 years ago. In this video, I show you some of my neighbors who have the freedom of being debt free while living an independent lifestyle on a mod...

With the help from a couple of great friends, we are tackling a southeast Alaska homesteading project that has been years in the making. Taking friends fishing is risky: Alaska homestead life

You got a couple “heats” out of that wood (cutting it and stacking it twice) 😜
@HuntingFarmerOfficial I'm good at that for sure. I'm hoping it drys out enough to get the heat I really want out of it... looks like you've been having a great time up in your neck of the woods
Thanks for sharing
@@ShadowMoonFarms thanks so much!!
I would hate to hit a log in that boat. Better make getting wood the priority
@@FishfearmeStudios we hit a small one on the way in and a 6 incher right before I started filming. Taking out a lower unit or two on 350s would be a pricey day. Enjoyed your brook trout! They are gorgeous
Evening the dog was sick.
@OpenAirAdventureFirewood she was definitely not a fan! I knew it was going to blow up but didn't know it would change that fast!
@remoteandrestless ya made it out alive that's what matters.
That boat ride was pretty intense 😂
@fatefarmspa it went from flat calm to 4 and 5 foot waves in 15 minutes. When we started back to get the kennel it got even sloppier. It was an interesting day for sure.
wise words
@MinuteontheMountain turns out the greatest man ever spent every opportunity focusing on others. I struggle to forget about my self long enough to give those I care about the most the attention they need and deserve. I've got a long way to go!! Keep those minutes coming, I need every one of them
I'm sure the pace seems slow sometimes, but you sure have accomplished a lot. Keep up the good work.
@MinuteontheMountain thanks so much for the encouragement! It has been exactly what we were hoping for, but we've got a lot to learn about starting a new better life. Keep the great minutes coming, they are very inspiring!

@FishfearmeStudios that's crazy funny!! Hope you are having a great holiday season. You've been killing it through the ice! Thanks for all you support for the last year!
@ Merry Christmas
@FishfearmeStudios same to you!
I so appreciate your sharing your story. I had my sawhorse by my side for 53 years. There were days that we weren’t the best of friends but the love was always there.
@suedavis681 there have been days like the country song "I know she still loves me but I don't think she likes me anymore" The daily little decision add up fast. Part of the reason we moved up was to keep working on liking each other. That a long time, but I'm guessing not long enough. When you find the right one it really changes everything. Thanks so much for dropping me a note!
Make time for just each other is my advice.

Walls, roof, windows, and now a door? You do know... insulation, wallboard, and heat is just around the corner.
@@mikeh5896 she certainly is very unreasonable 🤣 but in the end, I suppose it is a small price to pay for a woman that will move to AK with me... thanks for the heads up. I'll try to prepare myself mentally 😃
The best way to fix the condensation issue permanently is sprayed on insulation. Not cheap but I tried in my truck shell and I can camp without waking up wet now
@@FishfearmeStudios thats a good thought. I'll have to look into it
I would just wondering.. you build a big big work shop … why is you cabin so small..??
Wants the simpler life so builds a massive structure.
@Marius_vanderLubbe for true. I'm not very good at the simple life yet. Since it rains 250+ days a year here, dry space is a premium sobthe shop will give me someplace to build the house out the rain, but I probably overdid it on the size. I've been living the modern consumer driven life so long changing my mindset has been way harder than I ever expected. Appreciate the input
I would just wondering.. you build a big big work shop … why is you cabin so small..??
That's a great question . We built the cabin inside a shipping container in 2021 when we lived in UT and then shipped it to AK. The plan is to live in it for a year or so while we build the house. Because it rains so much here, the plan is to build the house inside the shop and then assemble it when the weather is good. If the shipping container cabin proves too small we will build a temporary living quarters in the shop. We decided to build a porch on the front of the shipping container cabin before winter so we would have a place to take off wet clothes and a place for a wood stove to dry everything out. Trying to choose the right order to build things has been more difficult than I thought🤣
When we put our barn up, they put a vapor barrier on the metal with bubble wrap so I’m sure you could rectify the condensation problem with bubble wrap. They sell it in 4‘ x 200‘ rolls down here.
I'll have to look into that. It is a challenge I wasn't expecting. I think I'm going to have to put gutters on as well to keep some moisture out of the soil
@ yeah I agree with that as well. Best to keep the water away from the building as much as possible.
@fatefarmspa always good to have a source of fresh water as well. Many of my neighbors run their house off of rain water
Asking a little much for a Door isn’t she? 😂
No end to her demands apparently 🤣
@ never 😭🤣
Evening Jarod. You lost 20 lbs and I found it. Nothing wrong with your lumber by the look of things. Government stamped lumber is a joke.
@OpenAirAdventure I'm sure it won't stay gone long🤣. I was actually surprised how straight it stayed. With zero drying I expected some warping. Most of the stamped boards at home depot would end up in my burn pile and I'm not really even that picky...
Thanks for taking us along

Good evening, Jarod. You guys are doing a great job. That's a lot of work you guys are doing. Ive noticed the lines aren't buried very deep.
@OpenAirAdventure hope you've been well and staying warm. Our temperatures bounce between 20 and 40 in the winter so the ground doesn't get very frozen. It ended up being a little shallower than I planned but I'm hoping it will be okay
@remoteandrestless i was imagining colder weather and lots of frost.
@OpenAirAdventure most of Alaska is that way for sure. Being on an island makes us quite a bit more temperate. Of course 35 degree rain is less fun...
