That's hard work hiking in all that snow. I saw a couple of bulls north of Beaver last week while shed hunting, but they were all still packing their antlers.
I've watched a group of bulls for years and on the first weekend of April they are about half dropped pretty consistently. Once I saw a bull packing the end of May
It still looked like a beautiful day to be out messing around in the snow. I have never seen an elk in the wild. Its beginning to look like I may never see another big snow storm in NJ soon, too.
I love watching elk. They used to be easy to find around here. Last winter was brutal for us, this one was a lot more mild but we still got plenty in the mountains
What region of the state are you in? Elk are doing great in Utah, the herd statewide is above objective. In the vast majority of the state elk are fairing very well this winter with minimal snow lower on the winter range, but also a good snowpack in the summer range. I think what you are seeing is just specific to your area, not indicative of the entire state. By all accounts if you ask outfitters they will tell you antler growth will be really good this year, and that only takes place with healthy herds .
It is the wasatch west/currant creek area. The herds should be doing great with this winter. Down by Price I've seen huge herds on private land. I think the quota they have for Wasatch area is ridiculously low and I've steadily watched the number of elk in this area drop over the last 10 years. Hopefully where you hunt in Utah they have taken a different management approach.
Beautiful snow covered scenery, I learned that side hilling in snowshoes isn’t recommended 😂. Elk population on the decline sounds like bad politics to me.
It was a great hike even with my slow motion fall! Wildlife management is difficult and I don't know that I could do any better trying to balance everyone's interests. That being said, I don't plan on wasting my money on a tag this year to chase non-existent animals
I would have thought so 10 years ago but I've seen them consistently in this area this time of year. Even last year when we had crazy amounts of snow. Of course one trip probably isn't representative of the actual situation
Beautiful day !! Pretty snow ! Nice having a Good spotting scope!! That would be me falling with the snow shoes on !!
I am very good at obeying gravity. It is the law after all...🤣
That’s crazy how the herd has thinned out there so much ! Couldn’t help to laugh when you fell down😂. Glad you were OK there 👍
I was surprised I only went down once🤣 I can barely walk without tripping as it is but once I strap tennis rackets to my feet it is all over

Boy that looks cold
What’s up Tommy Tron
It got a little brisk once the wind started up. But the thought of work makes me break out in a cold sweat so it balanced out

Your out in the mid west?
@@tommytron2000 utah currently. Moving up to Alaska before the end of the year

Man down! 😁
Looked like the squirrel became avian lunch??
Yep. Would have loved to catch that on film. That's something you could probably do

Leave it to fish and game to mess things up. Great hike though.
Ya. I think they do a better job in AK than UT but trying to balance all the interested parties is a challenge. Always love a good hike!
The squirrel didn't have a chance.
Right!

looked like you were mostly up too high in elevation 🤷♂

Too bad about the elk
Hopefully they are doing better in other parts of the state
