Poor Charlie. Barlet's staff does NOT make it easy for him. Heh.

I think Charlie was looking for any reason to troll his surrogate father

      One of the best lines

I love the little detail of Toby not noticing because he looked at what they'd actually done... but because he noticed the unused card.

i thought it was because they mentioned, "president" a few seconds before, and human nature being what it is, he began to look for where the president was--like, "don't think about an elephant"

The end of that cold open is one of my favourites. It's right up there with ”Ginger, get the popcorn” 😂

I sense that Sorkin came up with that punchline first and then wrote the cold open around it. Brilliant stuff.

I like that both scenes are about very smart people making very dumb mistakes

This scene just proves that the entire senior staff are occasionally, humanly dumb, and that makes them adorable.

The Sorkin years are basically a screwball comedy

Fun fact: in the season one episode “Six Meetings Before Lunch,” there is a fire in this fireplace.

I think the channel editor is getting the hang of punch lines now.

It's Sam's ashamed head duck when Charlie glares at him right after the alarm goes off that really gets me. A kid getting caught by a true authority figure. Perfectly done.

“You’re not using lighter fluid or anything are you?”
“Nooo! No flammable liquids to start a fire, ever!”
    “Found it!”
    “What?”
    “Kerosene!”

For a drama series, "The West Wing" had moments of comic brilliance and this was one of them. Expertly written and played to perfection.
We have CJ and the team painstakingly arranging the seating of everyone and forgetting the President.
We have Josh and Sam trying to get a fire going with disastrous results.
Donna is the connecting factor running back and forth between the two and Charlie's comment at the end when waking an annoyed Bartlet is icing on the cake.....

Continuity issue. In season one Episode 18 there is a nice fire going in this room with no problem.

That's where it cuts off in the show. The credits immediately roll after Charlie says that.
