I believe that Detroit 2 strokes should be saved... In trucks that are worth saving. That thing was a piece of junk. Great show to watch and certain bit of satisfaction knowing that it still held up for anytime at all under those conditions. Always love watching how you get those darn things out of the frame.
@@Bignardo18 those straight 6L runaways are more likely in the 6k maybe 7k range of rpm’s. Lots of balance in that bottom end compared to the 8V/12V/16V engines.
Yeah when it's not trying to run away. I like for people to preserve these types of engines. There's not many of these relics left. the truck itself in this one is complete garbage, but the engine was salvageable.
So I did some bad math. I noticed the main sound frequency the engine is throwing out is about 698 Hz, or theoretically 698 exhaust pulses per second. Multiply that by 60 for pulses per minute, divide that by 6 for 6 cylinders, and you'll get about 6980 exhaust pulses per minute. And since it's a 2 stroke, that means it's 6980 RPM, and because each cylinder has a power stroke each revolution (vs every other like a 4 stroke), it sounds like a 4 stroke running at 13960 RPM. I don't think I've ever wanted diesel nascar more than right now tbh. I could be completely wrong, who knows. It feels right though.
"I want to clarify something for you real quick.....This is a piece of s**t" Absolutely brilliant man. No other way it could have been said. Love the channel.
It was a running 671... even as a core it isn't worth less than scrap. So yeah, a waste. The truck itself clearly was a lost cause.... would have taken a lot to restore that.
we had a 1977 Detroit Deisel and it survived 2 runaways at 6000 rpm. it finally died last year. we pulled it apart and it had thrown a rod. (not out the block mind you.) had signs of piston/valve contact on cylinder 4 3 and 6. and a snaped valve spring on cylinder 1. but surviving two diesel runaways? that thing was a trooper
I gotta tell you. I worked on these pieces of junk many years. I often wished I could have done this many times. This was a very satisfying video! Thank you! What happens is the collets on the valves fail and then the valves fall into the cylinders.
I had an injector stick on a brand new Detroit 60 series motor. Drove it from Ruse, Bulgaria to Kaiserslautern, Germany and it didn’t let go. Drained the oil when I got back and there was about 20+ gallons of fuel/oil mix in the pan

I tried hard to get him to sell it while there was a dollar to be made but nope an I told him that that last engine was the last save, no more. I was thinking the same thing, right into his shop and a few good pieces of equipment parked at the front door.

I'm amazed at how well four cylinders survived after that amount of heat and WOT.
Heat or lubrication were not the root cause of the failure with this one. It was simply metal fatigue from over revving. ☠️
