      @@chickensinmygarden 🐤💖 hello again, I can tell from your videos that you really love your birds and take excellent care of them. I would value your thoughts on my chicken problem. I just got my first baby chicks about 4 weeks ago from a local person that keeps lots of chickens and incubated her own eggs. As it turns out two of the chicks are Sillies. The bigger birds are picking on the Sillies quite a bit. Is there a way the two sizes can live together happily? I would love to keep them all but I only have one coop.

    • @chickensinmygarden
      @chickensinmygarden  5 лет назад

      Chickens start establishing a pecking order when they are about 6 weeks old. That's probably what's happening. I don't usually mix different ages of baby chicks and on the occasions when I have, I have mixed older smaller breeds with younger ones that will eventually grow bigger. I don't know if that makes a difference though. The key to successfully mixing chickens is to make sure each has access to food and water (and the bullies can't keep them away) also to the heat source if they are still that young, and plenty of space and hidey holes so the small ones can run away. If there is already a big size difference you could divide the run with something the little ones can get through but the big ones can't.
      Unless it's really savage they will probably work it out and get along ok together eventually if you just give them time and space. Good luck

    • @voygirl1954
      @voygirl1954 5 лет назад

      @@chickensinmygarden thanks so much for your reply. I will wait and see if they establish a pecking order. One of my problems, I discovered today, is that 3 of the chicks are roosters. When I separated them the others got along very well. So things may work out. I have one other problem that I'm not sure how to deal with however. One of the chicks developed splay legs and later broke her toes on one foot. She is a small bird about half the size of the bigger birds
      The problem is she can't seem to stay on her perch very well because her legs won't stay together and her broken toes don't allow her to hang on very well. I'm trying to come up with a perch so that both the big chickens and the injured chicken can sleep well at night. I've tried a wider perch but that was even worse for the injured bird. She is the sweetest chicken and I want her to be comfortable too. I know this is an odd problem but I hope I can find a way to keep all the birds comfortable and happy. Any advice would be awesome. 🤞🐥💖

    • @chickensinmygarden
      @chickensinmygarden  5 лет назад

      @@voygirl1954 Oh dear poor thing. What a rough time she's had. I too would have thought a wider perch would be more comfortable but apparently not. You are obviously paying attention to what she is trying to tell you so my best advice is to keep doing that - give her as many options as you can and see which she chooses. Sometimes birds who have trouble perching do better on the end of the perch leaning against the wall or can squeeze in between two friends that prop her up on each side. And I guess trying to keep the floor well padded with soft shavings or straw etc will not hurt so much if she does fall.
