Love that your videos are a tiny bit sped up and have zero music (music can be so distracting) - Would love to have a video on making circles and stencils. Kathy, thank you! I am so grateful to have some help editing the videos...and I am working on the DIY circles video. You might be able to make the mats work but pro tip...the reason the Tyvek is so successful is that is is literally paper thin. Even the stencils give less stellar results when they get a lot of paint built up on them and become thicker, at least in my experience. Thank you for subscribing and commenting!

Yes…. Use the tyvek pieces once they have various layers of paint. Because Tyvek is so thin, it is SUPER easy to glue onto something else. It’s gorgeous!

Wow so beautiful loved all your gell plate prints and the price at the end absolutely amazing!! Would really enjoy seeing you do a video working on a pice like that and how you chose what gelli pieces to use and how you apply them.

Absolutely love your videos Vikki. Thank you so much for sharing your gorgeous art piece at the end. It's great to see how you use them in your own art practice. I would love to see just MORE. X
Everything you created in this video is beautiful! And of course the collage art at the end is simply exquisite. I know you always say to use the smooth side of the rice paper. I bought the same rice paper you use in your videos and tried both sides. I found I really like the results better when using the slightly textured side. It almost has a fabric look and feel after it picks up the paint. Either way, I’m smitten with rice paper for gelli printing, but what is the reason for using the smooth side? Thank you for your marvelous, generous videos-so well done. 🙏🙏🙏👌
Cathy, thank you! I would definitely go with what's working for you! In my experience, more tooth (or texture) in the paper leads to a less clear (crisp) impression, it all depends on what you like to achieve, knowing the "rules" is great so you can break them when you want to!
Thank you, Vikki. You are right-the textured side gives a less crisp image, so there is definitely a trade off. I’m sure I’ll be using both sides for the different effects. Such great paper!
Luciana, thank you! I did the piece you saw on paper, (pinned to gatorboard), which is unusual as most often I work on canvas or panel (I'm going to mount that one to panel), and yes, I used acrylic paint with the collage. I do have a video showing a very similar process, you can see it here ruclips.net/video/h37OCbiosB0/видео.html
Vikki, I LOVED this video! WOW! The piece of art you made at the end is absolutely amazing! If I were to use the prints to make cards or journals, is there a particular glue or adhesive you think works well since the rice paper is thin?
Judy, thank you! For the rice paper, adhering it to a journal or a mixed media piece, I use Golden Matte Medium. For greeting cards, the rice paper is challenging to get adhered smoothly to a card so I use 32 lb. copy paper!
Hi Brenda, the piece I showed at the end was the original and I did get giclees made of it, I will be selling the original, it is on paper and my intention was to mount it to panel before offering it for sale, which I haven't done yet...you can find the giclees on my website, www.vikkireed.com and thank you so much!
Suzi, I don't see a weight, it is the JapanBargain Calligraphy Rice Paper from Amazon in the blue and clear packaging. It is very thin, which is why I love it so much for collage!
HI Vicki, I stumbled on your channel after member of my fiber guild offered to do a course on this. I am fascinated. Two questions: do you ever print on fabric? And...have you used these for book making? Thanks!
I Spinsjal, thank you for your questions! I've tried unsuccessfully to print on fabric, but I have seen other videos that had good results. I have not used prints for book making, although I can't see why that wouldn't work. I use the gelli prints for collage in artwork, greeting cards and sometimes, just mount them directly to panel for an art piece.
question: videos I've watched have said to let layers dry, you pull right off the bat and it looks incredible. So can you brayer the paint on and pull off with any paper?
Hellyn, thank you for your questions! I didn't realize at first how the climate I live in, the usually warm and dry Southwest Desert affected the gelli print process. The humidity is a HUGE factor in whether or not your prints pull right away OR you need to wait. Very high humidity makes things very challenging, (and you need to wait quite awhile) but equally, so does very low humidity, especially if you have a fan blowing in your work space (and your paint can dry on your plate and the paper won't lift it). You can pull prints with most papers, I love the rice paper for collages, copy paper (24 or 32 lb. for notecards), book pages are fun, I have seen people work on Bristol which is a heavier stock, but I don't have much luck with that. The tip here is that the smoother your paper, the more likely it is you will have a successful pull of your print. I hope that helps!
I tried using rice paper today for the first time, but I ended up tearing it in several places and it did not pick up the 2-3 layers of paint on the gel plate. I suppose I left it on the plate too long? Do you have to be quick and not allow your acrylic paint to dry? Your artwork at the end was beautiful - thanks for sharing!
Laura, I'm so sorry to hear that...there are several things that could cause that. The thickness and viscosity of the paint is a factor, if you paint is too "saturating", it will tear the paper. Then if you could not pull the print, yes, the paint may have dried too long. The humidity of your environment is a huge factor and will affect your printing. I'm happy to offer you a 1 hour Zoom (live) instruction - introductory price is $59.00 - here's the link! vikkireed.com/buy-acrylic-paintings/ols/products/gelli-plate-printing-instruction---1-hour-over-zoom
Hi Vicky, I love your style with the leaves! I'm having problems with my paint staying on my gelli plate, and can't seem to find a video addressing this. I'm using copy paper, liquitex basics acrylic. It seems like my gelli plate is always sticky. I'm going to buy some rice paper to see if that works better. I want to use this paper for scrapbooking so I'm not sure about the rice paper. I'm trying to do your style with the leaves showing the veins, and the paint just stays on the jelly plate and doesn't come off to have that plain background to put the next color on...help please!
Karen, I know how frustrating that can be, I will share what I've learned in hopes you will get some answers! I DO NOT have success with the heavier body acrylics on the gelli plate (except in the case of image transfers and then just a VERY thin coat of Amsterdam Acrylic). Golden Fluid Acrylic is my number one choice. Liquitex SOFT BODY second choice. I tried the Liquitex Fluid Acrylics and did not like them at all. I don't know if rice paper is going to work for you for scrapbooking, you're correct about it being thin and not as durable, but it is perfect for collage. The Golden Fluid Acrylics (or Liquitex Soft Body) have a different viscosity and that seems to be so much more successful (at least for me), and you really don't need a lot of paint. When I brayer the heavier body paints, I get ridges and when I have that, I know I'm not going to get a nice print. So less paint, thinner viscosity, perhaps more drying time, I can't tell without watching you if that is an issue. Copy paper should be totally fine, as long as it is smooth and doesn't have a texture to it. Let me know if these tips help and good luck!
@@VikkiReed geez, I looked at several videos on what paints to use... I knew it was between Golden and liquitex... Of course I picked liquitex because it was cheaper... I wonder if I got a bad jelly plate, it just seems so sticky. So these ladies that are saying that you can use any paint and any paper is not a true statement! I got into this because I have so much paper laying around. Oh well, Thanks for the advice on the rice paper!
Sorry to bother you, what do you think of the folk art paint from hobby lobby? I bought four tubes of it to try it because it's affordable, and it seemed to be creamier, but again it doesn't come off clean from the jelly plate to do what you are doing
@@KarenElliott-i2g I'm so sorry you are having so much trouble, and I don't want to mislead you...there are a lot of differing opinions out there, I just watched a video in which the artist told people to never buy the rice paper that I ALWAYS recommend because she said it was not good...so I know there are artists that are making the heavy body paints work, but I can't...what kind of gelli plate do you have? Is it a Gelli Arts Plate or Gel Press Plate? Either of those should be fine. Have you tried conditioning it with Mineral Oil? Are you somewhere very humid? That can make a difference. Honestly, any paper will work, it just depends on what you want to use your prints for. I print the most on the rice paper because I love using gelli prints for collage. If I am making greeting cards, I use copy paper 32 lb. or at least 24 lb. You can print on old book pages, sewing pattern paper, last night I even used one ply of a 3 ply napkin paper. I can imagine how discouraged you feel, but I know you will get to the other side of this. Try the Folk Art Paint...creamy sounds good. I know some artists love the Deco Art Paint and that is less expensive as well. Do let me know how you're doing on all this and I will help if/when I can!
I hear you! You're not doing anything wrong...there are a couple of reasons why that could be happening, 1) the paint...I almost always use Golden Fluid Acrylics...the heavier body paints don't work for me, with the exception of when I'm doing a photo or magazine transfer. 2) the humidity and/or your drying time...if you are in a very dry climate, you can pull the print more quickly, if it is humid, you will want to wait five to fifteen, maybe more minutes before pulling your print, the print should no longer feel cool to the touch. 3) too little or too much paint on your plate...it is surprising how little pigment is needed to pull a beautiful print. 4) your plate might need a conditioning, a little mineral oil massage, then wipe clean with hand sanitizer. I know how frustrating it can be! But it is worth it when you can get it to work...gelli plate magic is irresistible! I hope that helps
Debra, Tyvek is an ultrathin, waterproof material that you can cut into shapes and use on the gelli plate. I re-use USPS envelopes for my shapes, thank you for your question!
Loved the final collage - the colours were superb,
Thanks very much, Philna!

The humidity of your environment is a huge factor and will affect your printing. loved the efx on rice paper/ what kind of glue you use for your collages.?
Sara, thank you for your question, I use Golden Matte Medium!
@@VikkiReed thank you for your kind and quick answer.
Will keep watching your videos to learn through your expertise.
Thanks
@@VikkiReed Thank you so much! I've never had a craft stump me so bad... I will conquer!...lol...
Love your artistry too!
Can you tell me what and where can I get circles (Tyvek) from.
Thank you
Justice, yes, thank you for your question, you cut the circles from Tyvek yourself, I'll have a video on it ready very soon!
whenever I try to use rice paper it always sticks and tears when I try to pull it off What am I doing wrong
What is tyvek
Debra, Tyvek is an ultrathin, waterproof material that you can cut into shapes and use on the gelli plate. I re-use USPS envelopes for my shapes, thank you for your question!
