Thanks for this video. Got my ps3 in 2009 and just changed the thermal paste. It was super dry after 13 years. Gosh. I can’t believe it’s been 13 years since I got it
Pro tip: dont pull the plastic piece of the power cable connector with the cable. Its a booger to put back on without bending the pins. Also, also, dont forget to plug the fan back in. Dont ask me how I know
I just changed the thermal paste on my PS4 Pro for the first time today. Then I thought I should do the PS3 since I've had it since 2011 and found this video. Thank you, this will help a lot.
Edit: I figured out why I couldn't get my PS3 back together. It seemed like the lid was just too tight to completely latch, and I suspected it was the disc drive because it looked like it wasn't level. Turns out it was the power button. My model must be slightly different from the one you used in this video, because the power button was blocking my disc drive from seating properly in the front. I removed the power button, put the disc drive back down, and then installed the power button and it closed perfectly. So for those of you who are having trouble with getting the shell to close properly, try installing the disc drive before the power button! I can not get the top shell back on no matter what I do. One of the teeth just won't clamp down for some reason
I appreciate this video, It helped me a lot as someone who is recently getting into PS3 systems and missed the console. I love my PS5 but when I'm not playing it I like to go back. You also made the disk drive cable look easy. It took me 5 times longer to get it in correctly.
I only wanted to dust and clean my PS3 completely but I was told if I remove it like this; I have to replace the thermal paste to prevent airpockets; this video helped in more ways then one since my PS3 slim was very speciic model; the fan cover was different then other PS3 slims I've seen dismantled. The only thing I'm not sure is how to carefully remove the old paste.
I would also say it would be wise to replace the CMOS battery with a high quality replacement, just since you already have it apart and it is super easy to do while you are in there. Also your dog is super thirsty lol, he was drinking that water forever lol.

Dig the background tunes. Thanks for the detailed tutorial! Got mine in pieces right now and knocked a few thermal pads off the top mobo shield. Now I'm digging through videos looking for a clear image of the shield - of my particular model - so I can finally reassemble and hopefully be able to watch a G$DD&?N BLURAY. Provided my bluray lens just needed cleaning and isn't burnt out, and I didn't break anything while separating the heatsinl from the CPU and GPU. Prayers are welcome and much appreciated lol.
I'm a proud owner of a PS3 Slim (model CECH-2504A) that I purchased last year and I would like to change the thermal paste. So I have a few questions: 1) 06:23 - How did you remove the old thermal paste? Would you recommend using isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab for the job? 2) 07:18 - Some people apply the thermal paste in a "X" shape, while you apply in a sort of "M" and then spreads evenly in the surface area. Do you think the method of applying the thermal paste makes a difference in the final temperature? Thank you for the video and help!
The slim and super slim use considerably less power than the Phat, haven't found that mine needs pasting, it's already quiet. Dry or not, if it's not getting hot it doesn't matter.
Mine is the same way, except when playing very intensive games. Like MGSV for example 😬 Gonna do a repaste on it anyways to see how it competes with the heavy games.
I change thermal paste at my slim model 3004b and i have 58° cpu and rsx 67 with 27% speed fun. I don't now if a best temperature but for a good temperature only chance is remove ihs procesor and change paste under ihs but is a dangerous operation.
@@fasttechvideo I can't find official ps3 temperature data and I don't know if my temperatures are safe, but removing ihs is a dangerous operation because I tried it on my old fat console and I scratched tracks after the processor. Now I set the fan speed to 29% and I have 58-63° for rsx gpu and cpu 53-56° after 1 hour play.
How often should I change thermal paste? I've had my PS3 for 5 years and never opened it to clean it or change thermal paste. It runs pretty well but when I play graphic intensive games the fan runs higher than usual. Do you think it's time to change the thermal paste?
nice vidio but unfortunately it isn't a total thermal paste replacement vid. those two squares you're applying thermal compound on are definitely important but what isn't obvious is that that those are metal plates that go over the GPU and CPU, their is a tuff to remove silicon under it(which keeps it in place) and thermal paste to which is what is on the die hidden under those thermal conducting plates should also be repasted as well, if you have the tools to do so. This can cause it to still overheat if bad enough. BUT for most people i recommend only applying were fastteck applies his paste as the thermal conducting plates(IHS) are tricky to remove with ought causing damage to the CPU and GPU.
Also I would add that it is still important to replace that paste underneath if I want to maximize it's lifespan so if anyone is uncumfterble or newish to console repair and has the expenses take it to someone who can do that part.
My PS3 slim bought in 2009. When it boot up around 30 second it sound be be be 3 times and shut. Power light keep flashing. Very rare time may boot successfully properly out of 100 times. What possible causing it?
Hi, I got to the ‘remove motherboard backplate’ part, however, 2 of the silver screws are impossible to get out. I’ve even tried pliers and they didn’t even move a little. Any solutions?
Make the screws flatheats by cutting a line using a dremel or a saw. If that fails use a drill to drill the head of the screw off but be careful. Good luck
I recently bought a never used CECH-2001A PS3 slim in mint condition still in its original box and everything. I’ve already opened it up to replace the dead CMOS battery due to years of not being used. I’m a bit hesitant on going further, should I just toughen up and re paste it? The manufacture date on it is June 2009.. so surely it’s in need of new paste? The paste goes bad wether it’s been used or not, right? Arctic MX4 or silver 5? Thoughts?
@@fasttechvideo is it enough to just replace the thermal paste like in the video? Or does it have to be made like the phat model? Where you remove the cpu and gpu plate?
@@fasttechvideo I see, I bought some 0,08mm metal cutting wire wich is used for removing displays. I will remove the cooling plates from the gpu and cpu. Because that will give the whole refreshing package.
@@fasttechvideo I tried the line method on my ps4 pro and let me tell you, at some point it sound like a damn jet playing both god of war games and I wasn't even on the map screen. Once I turned it off and let it cool, I took it apart and the majority of the paste wasn't even on the apu at all. I cleaned it up, and this time I did what I always do which is the spread method and it sounds a lot better. I mean the only time you hear the fan go up is when you are on the main screen or the map menu but it's not even loud like before. 😁
@@fasttechvideo I figured it out. It turns out the main ribbon cable wasn't connected. Even though I had it in, the clamp wasn't pressed down. Sony sure made it a real pain in the ass to repair. But how my console is running way better than it ever did. Thanks again!
@fasttechvideo Seriously, I can not thank you enough. I've had this console since 2011 and I never took it apart due to the lack of a guide that covered this specific model. This thing was chalked full of dust bunnies, and playing late cycle games would have the fan screaming. Popped in an SSD and this thing runs like a dream

Can I, in a bad situation use brake cleaner to clean the CPU and CSU? Or should I really buy Isopropyl alcohol for it? Bc if I should buy it, I will clean and replace the themal paste of my ps4 too
im missing some of the parts like the hard drive mounting bracket and the cover for it, so all i have is the hard drive itself somehow. plus whenever i turn the ps3 slim on, i get a message saying "cannot find appropriate system storage". pls help!
The system storage error is because either the hard drive is not connected or broken. We sell the enclosure for the hdd on our website. Let me know if you want the link.
@fasttechvideo it was the ribbon cable. got my controller hooked up and turned it on that way, but now my controllers usb port is loose and wont connect to anything.
I noticed my PS3 running a bit hot lately and I had some thermal paste lying around, so I thought why not. The inside of my PS3 Slim was a bit different (I didnt have the ribbon cable on the bottom of the blu-ray drive for example), but most of it was the same. Old thermal paste was on there since 2009 I think. Now it's pretty much dead silent when in the XMB. Thanks a lot for the great guide!
I think the hardest part in this is disc drive.... Itas a B***H to get back on, especially first time. Taking apart cosole and cleaning - 40 mins while putting back disc drive 2 hours..... then like 7 minutes of reasembling the rest
Can anyone help? I changed the thermal paste on my Play 3 Slim. I assembled everything, turned it on, there is sound image, Bluetooth and internet, but .... the Power and reset lights do not appear, strange is that the power and reset buttons work but the indicator leds do not 🤔
Guys if my ribbon cables that are shown at 3:15 are damaged on the tip...do i need to replace my disk drive whole or can i find the replacement cables online??
@@fasttechvideo they were already broken cuz I bought the ps3 from another person and when it started overheating the next day I opened it and cleaned a whole lotta dust and also found out all 2 of them ribbon cables destroyed at the tip except the wide white one
Can’t even turn my ps3 on anymore. Reconmected everything, checked the ribbon cables, i don’t really get it. i’ve been checking the power button cable but nothing should be wrong
Thank you. Im about to bust my jailbroken slim back out. Hasnt been opened since launch, so i know im gonna need to dust, and after 10+ years fresh pate would def do it justice. Sure it aint the most powerful system, but it was a fun console with many great memeories, but after 10+ year old dust and paste, it sounds like a fucking jet engine lmao.
Yeah maybe, If it's this old you may as well get your hands dirty and take care of it yourself. Tried to clean my old laptop i use daily. Broke the hinge in the process now I have to hold it with a thumb 👎 while closing the screen. Will get the hinge fixed and thinking of changing the thermal paste myself
Does anyone know why after replacing the thermal paste the ps3 overheats?. My ps3 had been working perfectly before i replaced the thermal paste, and now whenever i turn it on, it overheats and shuts itself off after couple of minutes, this never happened to me before.
@@fasttechvideo thanks for answering, yes i've been thinking of doing that, but just moments ago i checked the fan and it wasn't plugged, im going to check the temperature now and if the problem persists i'll go deeper into the clamps.

@@fasttechvideo is it enough to just replace the thermal paste like in the video? Or does it have to be made like the phat model? Where you remove the cpu and gpu plate?
@@gaboaaa23 depends on how loud your fan gets or of there is an overheating issue.
@@fasttechvideo I see, I bought some 0,08mm metal cutting wire wich is used for removing displays. I will remove the cooling plates from the gpu and cpu. Because that will give the whole refreshing package.
Where to get brand new rubber tabs from?
We will be listing them on our website soon.
I've been doing the line or pea method and letting the pressure of the heat sink spread the paste. I still don't mind spreading it either.
That works also, but I recommend spreading it as demonstrated to ensure the whole surface area of the IHS is covered.
You must have some legendary fingers to reseat that drive's bottom ribbon cable XD
Its experience haha. Thanks for your comment :)
Thanks for the video
Your guide worked! But I have a new problem: my disc drive won't read discs. It takes the disc in, then it makes a sound, but it doesnt spin up
Check the ribbon cables and then check the gears in the disc drive to make sure they are aligned correctly.
@@fasttechvideo I figured it out. It turns out the main ribbon cable wasn't connected. Even though I had it in, the clamp wasn't pressed down.
Sony sure made it a real pain in the ass to repair. But how my console is running way better than it ever did. Thanks again!
@@SavagePatch115 You are welcome. Please like the video, subscribe and share if you can. That helps me out tremendously
@@SavagePatch115 I try to do videos others haven't done. Its one of the reasons of the channel's relative success.
The SSD should speed up your loading times. Also I recommend jailbreaking your console using HEN. Cheers and thanks for your comment.
Can I, in a bad situation use brake cleaner to clean the CPU and CSU? Or should I really buy Isopropyl alcohol for it? Bc if I should buy it, I will clean and replace the themal paste of my ps4 too
You’re better off cleaning it with a dry paper towel please dont do that

im missing some of the parts like the hard drive mounting bracket and the cover for it, so all i have is the hard drive itself somehow. plus whenever i turn the ps3 slim on, i get a message saying "cannot find appropriate system storage".

How he remove the disk drive so easily. I removed the screw and ribbon cable and I feel like trying to remove the disk drive will break it
I wish you didn't have to take it all the way apart to clean the fan in this model
Yes its definitely inconvenient
Thank you 👍
@@zakkangourouxFR you are welcome
I think the hardest part in this is disc drive.... Itas a B***H to get back on, especially first time. Taking apart cosole and cleaning - 40 mins while putting back disc drive 2 hours..... then like 7 minutes of reasembling the rest
Early slim models have easier BD drive installation. Later model is just harder to install.
I have a CECH-2001A and that cable your talking about is behind the disk drive rather than under it on mine.
Can anyone help? I changed the thermal paste on my Play 3 Slim. I assembled everything, turned it on, there is sound image, Bluetooth and internet, but .... the Power and reset lights do not appear, strange is that the power and reset buttons work but the indicator leds do not 🤔
Check flex ribbon cable. You may noticed that pins are being worn out or even have its blue plastic parts tore off from the flex cable.
Skipped the actual cleaning of the paste - which is the part I came here for.
@@cxvcnxbzfdhjlaks use isopropyl alcohol and paper towels to wipe it off

Thank you. Im about to bust my jailbroken slim back out. Hasnt been opened since launch, so i know im gonna need to dust, and after 10+ years fresh pate would def do it justice. Check the tightness on the heatsink clamps/brackets

If it's this old you may as well get your hands dirty and take care of it yourself.
Tried to clean my old laptop i use daily. Broke the hinge in the process now I have to hold it with a thumb 👎 while closing the screen.
Will get the hinge fixed and thinking of changing the thermal paste myself
Should of put in a new battery while in there.

Does anyone know why after replacing the thermal paste the ps3 overheats?. My ps3 had been working perfectly before i replaced the thermal paste, and now whenever i turn it on, it overheats and shuts itself off after couple of minutes, this never happened to me before.
Check the tightness on the heatsink clamps and make sure they are screwed in evenly.
@@fasttechvideo thanks for answering, yes i've been thinking of doing that, but just moments ago i checked the fan and it wasn't plugged, im going to check the temperature now and if the problem persists i'll go deeper into the clamps.
