Me and my girlfriend were bored after a walk and we decided to pick a random game at a book store. We picked Lost cities because of the good art work. We have never played other games than monopoly and 30 seconds. Lost cities got us hooked and months later we´ve spend all our money on numerous card and board games... Thanks to lost cities!! Lost cities is such a good game because it is fun for new but also experienced players.

Hahaha, I have told people for a very veeeery long time that this is my all time favorite two player game. My wife isn't really a game player, but I can always break out Lost Cities and she's in.
Always glad to see others with the same opinion :D
BTW, got stuck in an airport once for many hours, bought a standard pack of cards in the terminal, and played with normal cards, but only 4 suits instead of 5.
We laid down the Ace cards across the middle, to mark the "lanes", then counted all the face cards as "handshakes"... and... that's it really. Fun in a pinch!

I was gonna comment about Arboretum! My wife and I play it at 2 and it's similar in tension. I've only played Lost Cities at a convention, and it was one of the variants with more players. I'll have to try the OG when we can go to the con's again.

Today, our children were entertaining guests. While they played, my wife and I did something we haven’t done in a long while: play board games against each other. We cracked open Cascadia for the first time. And I lost two games. So we switched games. I gave her the thrashing she deserved in two games of Azul. While I fixed the girls some lunch, I gave a listen to some of your couples games. After watching this video, I went to Amazon. Lost Cities is one a 3 for 2 sale! Sweet! And so is Arboretum! Excellent! And zero of the other games you mentioned that interested me were on sale. So. Decisions. Decisions. Finally settled on Santorini New York since it has a price point close to the others and I don’t own the original. I really enjoy your channel. Keep it up!

Another excellent video, Jon. Lost Cities is so great, but I think Battle Line is the better game and I've actually had more success recommending Battle Line to couples than Lost Cities for a few reasons. First off - the scores in Lost Cities can be all over the place and one person can sometimes lose by triple digits. Secondly - the shuffling between each round and after each game, along with the score counting, means there's a fair amount of down time for a relatively quick game. Battle Line usually feels close the entire way, with almost no down time, and I appreciate that WHERE you place your cards actually matters - choosing which battle to place a card in can have short-term and long-term effects, whether that has to do with winning a battle or going for the 3-in-a-row rather than any 5. Whereas in Lost Cities, the row of 5 colours is somewhat arbitrary; the colours could've been done in any order on the board because you can only ever play a card of that colour in one spot. I still love Lost Cities, but after playing it quite a bit on Board Game Arena, I find it tough to go back to the physical version when I have Battle Line right there instead.
Also - have you tried the new version with the 6th expedition? If so, what do you think? It's basically just a 6th colour (purple), which means it's tougher to plan for any one colour since you're more likely to have a wider variety of cards in your hand and throughout the game. It also makes the game run longer, and makes the hand management and hand hoarding even more tricky.
    - Carlo

Didn't know much of this game except it's vague reputation as a cutthroat and tense 2-player game which I thought would be a bit too much for me and my regular 2p gaming partner. But this video sold me and I impulse bought the game. And it's great! Not nearly as cutthroat or takethatty as I feared, nothing close to Arboretum. Instead a devious puzzle with a short playing time. With one game in I'm tentatively a big fan!
And a great video, too! Thanks for making this and shining some light on a modern classic that's easy to overlook!

My copy of this is the older version and it's got a weathered box from being carted around in hand luggage on several holidays now. My wife and I have played this at little cafes all over Europe and the UK. It's weird because I wouldn't put it in my Top 10 but that's not really fair given how much play it's seen and how many nice memories of close games and "just one more" games I've had with Lost Cities.

Holy crap, the production values in this video! They've always been good, but this is incredible. Well done.
I've always overlooked Lost Cities as a less crunchy and less satisfying alternative to Arboretum, which i picked up off the back of your hilarious couples games video. Should I reconsider?
Also, have you tried Ohanami (possibly the perfect lightweight coffee game) and Mandala?

    • @actualol
      @actualol  3 года назад +6

I also used to treat Arboretum as an improvement on Lost Cities, something I think I'd inherited from other reviewers. I don't think that's true anymore. They both have their merits, Arboretum adds in a spatial element and a little more flexibility. But there's something special in the purity of Lost Cities. I'm struggling to describe it here, but Lost Cities is special. It has that subtle Reiner Knizia magic which you don't always see immediately.
I have tried Ohanami. I like it, but I haven't been inspired by it enough to mention it in the video yet. It is in my collection, at least, for now. As for Mandala, I was frustrated by how opaque it is for new players in the first few games. I appreciate that most games improve after a few plays, but Mandala was just not fun any time I played with someone new and I haven't got time for that.

For some reason Lost cities didn't click with us at all :)
Though our experience with recommended games for certain player counts is certainly pretty unusual. For some reason we loooooove certain games that "should never be played with 2" and often time prefer those over dedicated 2 player games (Sushi go party, Scythe, Mysterium, ...). But one exception to that is 7 wonders duel, that one certainly worked for us :)
I know we are the exception in this (and many other) case(s).
Keep up the great work - these videos are amazing!

  • @CadenArmstrong

I like lost cities, but it is not without its flaws.
I played a few games with my partner that sucked due to variance.
Like most card games, Its possible to just get bad draws and have no power over what is happening.
If you sit there getting great plays and the other person only draws poorly and theres nothing they can do about it, its not fun.
But despite that, I definitely agree that its a great game.
Checkout the game "Babel", it fills a similar niche, but with a bit more complexity.

Something else we noticed about Lost City is that it seems to only ever be won by the same person in the couple almost every time. Battle Line so often is anyone's game right down to the last card being played, timing the attack and defence strategies and hate-respecting their dominating moves... it's a blast.

Only thing that kept me from buying this is counting up the points at the end. I prefer Schotten Totten because you know the winner as soon as the last card is played.
For a fast game I want fast scoring, too.
I have just received Air, Land, and Sea but it’s unplayed as of yet.

ALS is my favorite 2 player game. I would love to see it rethemed as a football game!

Very, very nice intro, but my italian roots compel me to correct you: it's mèdici, not medìci.
Btw, why you don't have 1M subs yet is beyond me. Great content!

    Never played Lost Cities.
Schotten Totten and Hanamikoji are in my couple games Hall of Fame for sure.
For Arboretum, my wife swore she would never play it again midway through the second game. It was way too mean for her, which makes me believe Lost Cities wouldn't work.

IMO, Arboretum is way way meaner than Lost Cities. I wouldn't even describe Lost Cities as mean; at least no more so than either Schotten Totten or Hanamikoji can be, if you're playing to win. But Arboretum is absolutely cutthroat.

Generally speaking I ONLY buy 2 player games because getting a group together is too hard

Great video, Jon. This video is obviously aimed at the "noobies", which is great! I hope we can attract more people to the hobby.

Lost Cities is awesome. Need to try Arboretum, since LC is only for two players.
