    Underrated movie. I seen it in theaters when I was a little kid so I may be too nostalgic to remain objective but I enjoyed the hell out of it then, and I love it now. Doesny deserve all the negative criticism simply cause it doesn't add up to the original. It's a little more cartooney but so what. The cartoon was great too.

      Nothing wrong with this film other than the lame new logo ( hated it as a kid and still do) the lame new look for Slimer (also hated it as a kid and still do) and the lame Statue of Liberty gimmick. I liked it a bit as a kid but as an adult its pretty cheesy. I wish they would release a special edition with the original logo digitally placed over every 2 logo and digitally replace the lame version of Slimer. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I saw this movie in the cinema when it opened as a kid and although I liked the cartoon I hated the new look of Slimer in this. It was so cheap looking and even as a kid I could tell it was just someone in a cheesy suit.

    I liked this movie. And I am among those who defend it. I never saw the recent movie of Ghostbusters, but I believe that the director’s son who had a cameo in the movie as that kid at the party will direct an upcoming Ghostbusters movie that will hopefully be a franchise saver.

    Well done, lads!! You & Tim prove, yet again, you’re a very strong duo in dissecting and analyzing films👍🏻👍🏻. I’ve always felt there was a better way to approach Ghostbusters II: Open the film directly after the events of the first movie and show the boys being taken to court for the destruction to the city due to Stay Puft and Gozer. Keep the court room scene the same with the Scolarie Brothers, then do a slight time jump and show Dana still having baby Oscar, but make Venkmann the father. This way they could’ve preserved Peter and Dana’s relationship from the first movie everyone loved and then give Peter more of an emotional investment in solving the case.
    This also would’ve eliminated the whole explanation and montage of having to see them become Ghostbusters again. It would’ve just dropped us right into the story and done what all good sequels do which is expand on the story and allow the characters to grow and mature from where we last saw them in the previous film.

    • @WilliamHaywardPainter
      @WilliamHaywardPainter 5 лет назад

      Doug Walker it, yeah. That kind of potential strength of what could have been the second film would be interesting to see in Jason Reitman's third film, make a film with the same heart as before that feels part of the same universe but works as an expansion of the franchise.

  • @WilliamHaywardPainter
    @WilliamHaywardPainter 5 лет назад +5

    To be fair we don't see neither Ray nor Egon looking up info on Zuul, Gozer or Ivo Shandor in the first film, except Dana looking at a piece of paper and Egon telling Peter he looked up Shandor in Tobin's Spirit Guide - telling more than showing, so that's something I'll give GB II is that they show Vigo research on a museum/computer database. It's not terribly interesting, but something

    Great job guys, really enjoyed listening!
    GB2 is a guilty pleasure for me mostly because of the affinity I had with the main cast but I understand why many people took a dump on it, in some ways it felt like a cheap plastic version of the original. I agree with much of the commentary - the soundtrack was worse, the photography was a little flat until later on, and the film took too long to really get going.
    One thing I thought both GB films had going for them was the ability to hold the comedy and horror aspects in just the right amount of tension, something the 2016 film really failed at (in fairness they never even bothered with the horror side, but that's to the film's detriment).

    I like your idea of the "clean slate" after the Ghostbusters save the new year. If everything had come to a negative head or as Egon stated, "hot and ready to pop" then a resolution for all was what everyone needed. The mayor giving them the key to the city was just that instead of everyone deriding them as frauds. Also your curiosity as to whether they would still be in business after defeating Vigo. All the ghosts that attacked the city when the slime surfaced still needed busting. Positive commentary guys!

      Actually the newly released Blu Ray Steel Book, does have an audio commentary for Ghostbusters II with Dan Aykroyd, Ivan Reitman and producer Joe Medjuck. Sadly many Ghostheads have commented that the commentary track is not great. Time has not been kind to the trios memories and their are long gaps of silence at different points. Part of me wishes that someone at Sony thought of doing an audio commentary for Ghostbusters II sooner (like when both movies were reissued on DVD in 2005), especially if they could have gotten Harold Ramis to participate like he did for the original movie.

    The original Ghostbusters has been able to rise in my appreciation as I've grown up. Ghostbusters II on the other hand has lowered instead. Entertaining enough, but decidedly average rather than anything spectacular. I would agree that for a time it did probably did receive more hate than it deserved, but I think the pendulum is starting to swing a little too far the other way with people online. Well, in my opinion anyway. Something that's become somewhat common when it comes to reappraising once derided sequels from around this time. Lol. Anyway, there are some themes and ideas with potential, but they feel watered down by getting contorted into the story structure of the first movie. And yet, I'll still double feature this film with the first every October all the same. Haha.

    • @pts5217
      @pts5217 3 года назад +1

      I agree. It’s not dreadfully bad, but it’s nowhere near being any good. The script felt watered down and thrown together. A cash grab looking to capitalize on a successful cartoon instead of an inspired idea.

    • @anthonymaslow798
      @anthonymaslow798 2 года назад

      Agreed, now people everywhere are trying to act like it unfairly maligned. It really wasn't. It was a decidedly uninspired film and I get rather annoyed with how "fans" defend shit because they feel something worse has come out subsequently. It's happened with Star Wars and the prequels. Huge apologist culture now cuz people hate the Sequels. Like, y'all know both can be bad, right?

    I loved the 2nd film I'm not sure what the fuss was about was it oscar worthy? No but it was no worse than Jaws 2 or Back to The Future sequels of its time. Moreover people often complain that the ghostbusters should'nt have been broke and unpopular. I disagree people have short memories and could have easily forgotten their previous heroics and lost faith in the supernatural.

    Anyone who defends this film is likely biased from nostalgia. The script is mostly terrible except for a few laughs and the cast mostly look bored. It’s overly silly and goofy with loads of branding which appeals to kids. If you saw it and liked it as a kid, you’ll likely have a huge blindspot for all it glaring flaws. First impressions can last forever.

      Nope! Saw it for the first time recently as well as the original and I gotta say it's a great movie. It just seemed really entertaining. After seeing both movies, I think the "actors seem bored" critique fits more with the first than the second. The second just seemed to have more of a narrative, whereas the first seemed to be more laid back in it's story.

We (some of the crew) were chatting to her one night about various films (Mostly Alien!) and when we mentioned Ghostbusters 2 her exact words were "The less said about that, the better". So I don't think it is just me, one of the main stars thinks it is rubbish.

    • @ben8447
      @ben8447 5 лет назад

      I just feel it is a waste of time. I would much prefer it if Oliver put him time into looking at more quality films and also classic films from an era other than the 80s. I mean, why does Oliver never review classic films from the 30s, 40s or 50s. It's like he is a film fan but only of the 1980s. There are better films to review and better uses of his time.
