Loved hearing the whole back story of these typewriters. Thank you Emma for helping Sarah!!!!
😊
Couldn’t get the image out of my head of a roomful of CIA operatives typing encoded messages on pink Barbie typewriters ready for their missions.🤫
You’d have a room for the coders and a room for the decoders ;)
If it takes a carbon ribbon I’m thinking you could pop open the cassette/cartridge and wind on some new carbon ribbon. It’s fairly easy to find old IBM ribbon and you can even spool it onto regular typewriter spools and have a really neat printing manual machine.
Thanks!
Man, I would have loved to have a Batman version of this. The encoding function is awesome.
depending on the ribbon you can just re-ink it. i had an super old fiber ribbon typewriter and it could easily be refreshed with any type of non-drying ink.
I have an updated video with ribbon replacement tips!
Emma sounds like a fighter. Haha
Emma is my typewriter fairy godmother!
so you own an enigma machine that is a typewriter
You and Emma should both have one of these and send each other letters in code!
Brilliant video lol, cheers to Emma for her hard work
Now buy and Oppenheimer typewriter. Oh wait. That’s just any old 30s or 40s portable.
Good video very professional
This is pretty cool actually!! Makes me think about getting an electronic typewrtier now. .. probably not a Barbie one tho 😋
What a great story. My hunt for a barbie typewriter begins!!
Careful- once you find one you find tons!
How weird is that... inquired about this earlier this week, and NOW you GOT one!!!
Ive got TWO!
@@JustMyTypewriter I posted the comment within the first few minutes watching this! You are an AMAZING story teller! I had goosebumps, I was crying, laughing, leaning into the screen reading...
I have a feeling SOMETHING coukd be sorted out regarding the cartridges though... I'll brainstorm some more, and maybe see if there's a Canadian option (this country is technically related to England somehow, I forget the term for what it's called)
Or... if there's a way to re-ink the cartridges... I'll brainstorm and try to look some stuff up lol 😃
@@thethriftyfawn I'm thinking reinking is the way to go
@@JustMyTypewriter Perhaps try the WD40 method!
You could buy other barbie typewriters just for the ribbons on them, if they have stopped manufacturing them and new old stocks no longer exist.
The hunt shall continue
Also I recall similar type of ribbon cartridges for dotmatrix printers used to have tiny holes to add ink into them to recoat the ribbons with ink. I'm sure a DIY solution could be tried, if you have a surplus of ribbon cartridges.
I'm surprised that anyone sold toy typewriters in the early 2000's.
There's even a later design sold past 2006
Very informative! A lot of dedication went into this!
Wow, Emma is a rockstar ❤
Barbies are awesome.
why dont we use this to send secret government information?
I just saw the other video... and then saw this one. Lucky break!

Awesome stuff!!
What I don't get is why these 21st century enigma machines are inside kids toys. What was the purpose amongst Barbie fans?
It wasn't Barbie's intention to have it! The original design company, Mehano, used it as a special feature. Barbie just took the entire machine, coding included, to reproduce.
Secret messages among (best) friends was already a thing in the 90s, if not the 80s. I remember plenty of magazines teaching you about writing in lemon or orange juice, and there were dairies and friend-dairies around with 'special ink' pens that worked similarly. When I learned Belgian hand sign language, I taught my best friend and no-one else. :D Girls were just as excited to write in code as boys were, if not more!
And what made the Enigma machine so hard to decipher was that it wasn't just enciphering/deciphering stuff from a single setting, the machine's setting was changeable. The toy typewriters have 4 settings, much simpler and even decipherable by hand if you got enough text (with not a lot of typo's).
Hi how to put ink
@@manuelcaoile120 So these machines take cartridges that have a plastic based ribbon. They're fully encased. I've been searching for an alternative and haven't found one yet, but once I do, I'll be sure to share!
Um I idot have one of that because it was Givin to my granddaughter
Just the tipe Reiter we live at the Philippines but we are from London
@@JustMyTypewriter Use a sheet of carbon paper? That's what I do with manuals that run out of ribbon. Simple.
