Just finished watching the first game, and yeah, Denver in 7 was my pick as well heading in. Anthony Davis is having a great playoffs so far on the defensive end (basically back to his Bubble form on that side of the ball) and is shooting well, but the weight he's added since 2020 might chip away slightly at his ability to reach some shots or defend switches on Murray. While Jokic is still not a particularly vertical defender, he has improved his horizontal game even from 2020, and on the offensive end, he's become significantly more aggressive (and more varied) in how he attacks switches, which makes that scheme harder to access for LA compared to 2020. Denver's defensive personnel has also seen a significant upgrade, with MPJ turning into a neutral to positive defender and the team as a whole having a solid amount of size, with Gordon, Bruce Brown, KCP, & Christian Braun seeing positive contributions.
On the other hand, this Lakers team is much deeper than 2020's, with at least 3 guys who can provide some solid ball-handler minutes (Schroeder, D-Lo, & Austin Reeves) and serve as secondary creators off the bounce, attacking closeouts and getting solid looks from midrange or the rim, and they have enough bodies to throw at Denver that they can muck up things a bit. Rui & LeBron match up reasonably well with Aaron Gordon in terms of size and verticality, as do Austin Reeves & Schroeder. AD has also played Jokic well. However, there's a couple smaller issues here:
1 - The Nuggets have more effective options off-ball than they did in 2020, and are more willing (and able) to use Jokic there, which puts AD in a touch spot. Their shooting and point of attack defense have also improved, making Schroeder & D-Lo's minutes a bit questionable as the former has to deal with more size and the latter has relatively slow foot speed for a guard.
2 - While Schroeder and Reeves are solid defenders, the former gives up some size on-ball against Murray (and he's posted up guards before in spots if other options have run dry), and I'm not sure how well the latter will hold up off-ball. Bringing in Vando would be the obvious solution to that, but by doing that, LA would be downgrading their shooting, and given how the Nuggets defense likes to operate with that shift concept, those skip passes LA would need to throw would be tougher and have less payoff with him in the game.
On the other hand, the Lakers have some legitimate advantages of their own, namely:
1 - A lot of post-up options. Rui, LeBron, & AD can all attack smaller bodies well, and if the Nuggets are sloppy with their switches or shifts, they should pay a decent price.
2 - A highly adaptive defensive scheme and excellent coaching on that end of the floor.
3 - LeBron James. Even an older and slower LeBron James.
That said, I'm predicting Nuggets in 7. While I expect this series to be very close, I think Jokic's versatility and the team's off-ball movement (as well as MPJ's & Murray's shotmaking abilities) will be a bit too tough to slow down.

    • @thestatusjoe9949
      @thestatusjoe9949 Год назад +1

I think the biggest advantages the lakers had last night were AD roaming off ball which slowed down the nuggets offense slightly, and Lebron getting the mismatch in the pick and roll, particularly on Murray, because you can’t put a guard on Lebron and expect him to do much

For the Lakers, I believe there is some lineup and minutes combination that the Nuggets wont be able to counter given their struggles with interior and rim protection. This Lakers team runs so deep with quality players that there should be an answer for everything
The problem is gonna be finding that amidst the inconsistencies of their role players with chemistry built only after a few months against the well oiled and gelling Denver machine.
Hard to bet against Lebron with a decent team, but at _some point_ the years have to catch up to him.
Final Prediction: Denver in 6. If it gets to 7 that means LA have consistently found a strategy to win and I favour them

Nuggets in 6. They have the best player amongst the two teams, and they have the better coach. Jokic is on a tear and he been playing out his mind and he's also crazily consistent. If the Lakers slip up in one game it's wraps. And Anthony Davis has been Notorious for that and when AD plays bad the Lakers play bad. It'll be a good series but, Jokic is too much.

@@killadiator1014 I think the Lakers defence is far superior. The Lakers have the pieces to improve their defence and make it harder for nuggets to score. Notice, how the nuggets points reduce on each quarter and the Lakers scored more and more?
The Lakers can improve their defence whilst the Nuggets can't. They just don't have the personnel.
Their two best players aren't the best on defence and this can be a problem. Jokic got away with a lot of fouls that he might not get so lucky as the series goes on and they attack him more. They could also attack Murray earlier and get him in foul trouble quick too.
If Murray or especially Jokic get in foul trouble, they just won't have enough to keep going. The Lakers as you saw don't stop fighting. And their defense gets tighter as the game goes on.
Nuggets had to use a challenge just so they can have the foul switched off Murray to jokic. This is a bad sign. Because the foul trouble will be problem. They don't have an answer for when LeBron attacks Murray. It's either double or leave Murray on LeBron, which is will either be a point, open pass or foul.
