  • It might have been the fewest rolls yet (and a little break from combat), but there was still plenty of lore, intrigue, and of course, mystery meats. Catch up with Action Surge as the team reflect on their first full day in Barunn.
Action Surge is Natural Six's fortnightly post-show debrief, where Dungeon Master Harry and the cast break down their favourite moments, their regrets, and any theories from the Dungeons and Dragons session they've just played, as well as adding their thoughts and hopes for future play. #NaturalSix #dnd #dungeonsanddragons #ttrpg #actualplay

I love that now we have a "Don't be a Dob" moment with a "Don't be a Radion" (be a Ben) moment 😂

To any new D&D players: Don't be afraid to interact with the world the DM is describing. If you want to pick someone's pocket, try it. If you want to haggle with a street vendor, try it. It will be the DMs job to tell you what happens or to make a check and the results of the check. Hopefully, the DM isn't a micromanaging nightmare, which doesn't appear to be the case with Harry. Also, I found having people leave the room interesting. One of the things I had to wrap my head around starting out with table top RPGs was just because you know something as a player does not mean your character knows it.

With that final point, do you think it helps only taking notes of things you character learns of during a session, and let yourself as a player forget what you've heard about other players' adventuring?

I thoroughly enjoy these Action Surge episodes not just as background chatter, because they are quite long, but because of the little tidbits of insights into player and DM choices of roleplay. Gives me lots of pointers.

I love the shoutout to Worlds Beyond Number. Just a reminder that there's so much D&D content out there these days that is top quality. I'm glad this show is proving to be one of them.

Thank you for another episode of your insights in the story. This time I really loved your discussion about the psychology of the characters.
Thank you for sharing this with us and wish you all a very lovely day.

Here I was thinking Alex is really leaning into his roleplaying and staying charater but it was a headache 😂It was great episode, I can't wait to see how the Dolly and Endellion thing plays out.

9:01 If there's anyone here who hasn't listened to Not Another D&D Podcast, do yourself a favor and go listen to the first campaign, which is hands-down the best D&D actual-play campaign ever recorded.

    This is for Harry.
As I fellow DM, I was really interested to see what worldbuilding you were going to have to separate your high fantasy world from the rest.
A creation story that happened for a reason *other* than for the purpose of creation, but as a means to an end?
Oh I like that you clever bastard. Now this really is a bit more cosmically interesting...
    Well done!

With hidden info, even worse than the temptation to metagame is forgetting what you aren't supposed to know. If it rings a bell, the bell has rung, & then it's too late to stop it influencing you.
I was really surprised that there was not more concern about Rashid's knowledge now potentially being compromised. Anything he knows could have been interrogated out of him by this point, including guard names and patrol routes and less populated parts of the grounds; certainly enough to seriously harm the security of the council. I'm surprised the party even went there in person too though; was expecting them to send a missive & then see what the reaction was.. just in case. Am I paranoid?

"God made us: invented us as a man invents an engine. A car is made to run on petrol, and it would not run properly on anything else. Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other." ~ C.S. Lewis

Easier and more satisfying to not find out off screen and then to react naturally/spontaneously when it is revealed to the characters, I think...

I still need an idiots guide to the lore dump regarding the gods, the war, their power etc. I’ve rewatched this twice now and it’s just not piecing together.

If you're up-to-date on the story, then check out the Glossary which I update at the end of every story episode for a simplified breakdown. For your question specifically check the entries titles “The Divine” War and “Reliquiae”, hope it helps! tinyurl.com/NatSixGloss - Hollie

Interesting to hear you start by offering the players to call for rolls! Not against the idea but uncommon to hear it said. So long as it is kept in character (as I'm sure you will) that's a great opportunity for things like "do I believe him?".
