A young rapper (Eminem) struggles to seize an opportunity within his bleak life but his problems threaten to weigh him down.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Controversial rap star Eminem makes his acting debut in this hard-edged urban drama, inspired in part by incidents from the musician's own life. Jimmy Smith (Eminem), known to his friends as Rabbit, is a young man trying to make his way out of the burned-out shell of inner-city Detroit. Rabbit's entire life has been a hard climb, and it certainly hasn't gotten any easier lately; Rabbit has just been dumped by his girlfriend, forcing him to move back in with his emotionally unstable mother, Stephanie (Kim Basinger), and he's getting along especially poorly with Stephanie's new boyfriend. Rabbit has a factory job that's tough, demeaning, and doesn't pay especially well, and he's convinced his skills as a rapper are his only real hope at a better life. Rabbit makes music with a crew of DJ's and MC's who call themselves Three One Third, among them his close friend Future (Mekhi Phifer), but his status as a white kid making music in a predominantly African-American community and culture is extremely intimidating, and after Rabbit freezes up in the midst of an MC battle, he's convinced he's missed his chance and that he's doomed to lead a marginal life as a factory rat for the rest of his days. With the help of his friends, and his new girlfriend Alex (Brittany Murphy), Rabbit struggles to work up the courage and the confidence to take one more shot at making his dream a reality. 8 Mile was shot on location in Detroit; the name refers to 8 Mile Road, a thoroughfare along the city's perimeter which effectively separates the middle-class suburban neighborhoods from the lower-class inner-city.

There is a reason Eminem is real and people love his music so when the movie came out everyone was excited. I remember in 2002 when 8 Mile came out they brought it from R16 to R13 cause 13 year olds wanted to see the movie so badly I was 13 at the time when I saw it with my sister on my birthday it was awesome and fully packed. Nothing against Leonardo but Eminem is a legend and knocked his first ever movie out of the park.

Eminem never did big movie rolls before, or acting school etc, and acts better then most actors which are called "good" actors.

This movie gives me hope in so many ways. Everytime, I feel like I can walk anymore, this movie makes me run.
This is one of those songs that i can put on repeat for hours and _still_ not get sick of it. This song *_never_* gets old. Such a rarity these days. Almost an impossibility.

she's been dead man. She died in 2009. And upon further research it's actually becoming public knowledge she may have been poisoned. Her husband died last year after he questioned the autopsy reports and asked them to be examined further. Upon further investigation, heavy metals of large quantity were found in Brittany Murphy's blood. So it may not have been an overdose after all. Now I never buy into conspiracy bullshit, but it seems apparent that Brittany Murphy and her husband were both murdered.

this made me cry tho. In the last year I started listening to eminem (I was too young to before) and I love him and his music so much. It's really life changing and this made me emotional.

My best friend died in 2005; watching this reminds me of him, because the first time we watched this trailer it was together and at the 1:02-1:05 mark I will never forget his reaction. His eyes got real big and he looked at me and said "Oooohhhhh". At that point I knew that we were going to see this movie together, ASAP, and we did. Boy did he love it...and he loved Eminem, too.
