I used to hang out at Dickinson drag strip as a teen. In grade 12 after working for awhile. Icame home with a 1968 Plymouth GTX with a 440 packed in it, my dad thought there was a thunder storm when I came home. H e did not want me to have such a powerful car. But I let him drive it, it had a four speed with the old pistol grip wood shifter. I got to keep it. I often woke up to it leaving with dad barking my back tires. RIP Dad. I miss our car!
The Barracuda @ 45sec. Was bought by my Dad & Brothers and raced @ Ohio tracks. We called it "The Big Cat" Injected 426 on Nitro out of Sandusky, OH. It was a great time to be a 8yo. Went on to buy "Mr. Pickette" in 72. Thanks for the memories. I'm the only one left of my family now.
I remember when car magazines used to have centerfold pics of these cars, each month. My walls were covered with a lot of the cars you discussed. Great job!
Love the early funny cars. Appreciate the time you gave between the pictures.
For sure, the early Funny cars are the best.
Love that 1971 Beetle, reminds me of that Matchbox Drag Beetle
The best times to see funny cars, especially O. C. I. R Manufacturer funny car 64 car field !
OCIR my home away from home, sad day in 1983!
I always loved the old school funny cars!
As far as I'm concerned, The Golden Age of Funny Car's, right there in that 10 year span. One can probably say with certainty that it was also the golden age for super stock, which gave way in popularity to pro stock as well. The sheer volume of cars in this era says alot about how it was almost a class of racer where anyone could dip their toes in it. With the coming of big time sponsors like Revell and others, it helped pave the way to what we have today, unrecognizable blobs with hints of Mustang grills in the front of the blob....... No mention of Barry Setzer's Vega with Pat Foster behind the wheel. That car dominated for a long time in this early era....
I never realized how many cars sponsored by GM & Ford actually ran Chrysler hemis. Can't beat 'em join 'em I guess.
Good to see you fit Jerry “The King” Ruth in there at the end! He was a beast winning both Funny Car and Top Fuel at the same event I think 3 times, he took out many big names, Garlits, The Snake, many others
LOVE this, great job, I hope there is more to come, like the next 10 years!
A TON of Rolling ART ❤
Thanks for the AMC Content
COOP
...
Great video. Brings back good childhood memories seeing a majority of these at Cordova and Byron with my dad. The cars might have been slower than today, but they were better looking and more exciting to watch.
I was at the 100 funny car show at Orange County. All the cars were lined up on both sides of the drag strip and started at the same time, what a sound.
Super video. There was nothing better than the late 60’s and 70’s era funny cars. I was blessed that I had the opportunity to be part of a funny car team in 76 when I helped Jim “The Wombat “ Wemett’s Mustang II. Met some super people that I use to read about in the magazines that I will never forget. I feel sorry for people who love drag racing especially funny cars that missed out in that era because that was real drag racing not the hi dollar commercialized BS that goes on today.
My favorite track ,Lions Drag Strip, Saw some amazing races there in the mid & late 60's .Tuesday night was run what ya' brung racing...5 bucks, a helmet and a tech inspection would get you 3 passes through the lights. They had a sign at the exit from the parking lot that read " Drive the Highways...Race at Lions" Tons of great memories from there and Saturday Night dirt racing at Ascot Park!
I too grew up in drag racing at OCIR I was 20 yrs old in 1978
Great video, being a late 70s baby I still remember seeing these on TV during the early 80s. I'd have to say this era of funny cars has to be the best years of some nice bodies which they all had very nice paint
Don Gay's GTO never had a chev eng as he says. It was a Pontiac eng originally- later a KB 426
those were the great years, todays FC are all the same.
Yep those were the days. I spent many a day and night at Irwindale raceway watching many of these cars run. The 32 car meets were awesome. Today funny cars are just too fast. Heck prostock cars run faster than the funnies did back in the 70's
LOGGHE's Are THE FATHERS OF THE FUNNY CARS
I can remember going to Sir Seattle international raceway with my buds to see the 64 funny cars. The smell of the nitro , the sound of those 64 funny cars that penetrated your body straight through to your soul is an amazing thing that I'll never forget. ONLY IN AMERICA BABY
Pre fire burnout Jungle Jim Camaro. When I saw it the paint was burned off the rear quarter.. The Boss Bird looked soooo good running down the track.
Great work keep them coming 😊 Thank you
Fantastic video of Fantastic cars! I grew up in Detroit in the 60s and these cars were SO AWESOME!
I am watching this from Germany. In trying to get a feel for the speed I have compared the 1970 Porsche 917 top speed down the Hunaudieres (Mulsanne Straight). The numbers differ, but it might be fair to assume 240 mph. The Mulsanne is round 5 km long, followed by a 90 degree corner. Still, the 917 was the top product of the Porsche racing division, driven by the best racedrivers in its time. It is almost unbelievable what privateers and small shops came up with, being shown in this clip. And it's bloody frightening too. Thankyou.
Makes my day when you make your videos. Watch them all day!
You forgot jungle Jim/jungle Pam !!!🤔??
No they showed the 70's blue camaro
That 438 AMC in the Grant Rambler Rebel started out as an AMC 343 the biggest engine they had at the time.
Great stuff...was kinda hoping to see my cousin Grant Springers built rig and driver Barry Price...Last of the Mohicans Corvette. The team started with a Vega and Barry said it was dicey at the finish line so they went heavier with the Vette. Grant was from Eugene Oregon and been raised building motors for Go-Karts....His father was exactly like Burt Monroe in The Worlds Fastest Indian. Racing was our life in 50's & 60's Eugene. Light to light or every night out 30th for the midnite nationals and Grant always had a fast machine...He dominated with a 58 Impala 2-speed gooey-go for way more years than it should have. He was a great friend and close family. I used to have a 64 fury 383/330 and if it ever had a hiccup, Grant was right under the hood to figure it out...We will see ya later draggin' on the Sun...Save me a SplitWindow!
Excellent video thanks for putting this together
Funny car's , lot's and lot's of them , bring's back so many many memories , I wish I could go back in time to see them again Love um❤❤❤.
fantastic shots----
I grew up in the time of these cars and watched a fair amount of the match races.Jungle Jim used to park where I worked and led me to drag race till my later years.
WOW!! Great Video Thanks!!
I saw a lot of these cars at Cordova, and Neita Dragstrip ( Now Cedar Falls ) In Iowa in 1969 and 1970. And some at Cornhusker Raceway Park in Nebraska. The Flying Dutchman Dodge Charger was one of my favorites. I still have the ticket stubs.
Another great video!
Love the old school cars
The Charlie Allen "Saddleback Dodge" was a 1969, not a 1968.
Didn't know the facts on the funny cars until I watched this . I have great respect for all the Iron from that Era. Have owned old ford, chevy, and chrysler products, they all were great in my book!!! Loved the big blocks!
I remember Gene Snow would race Kelly Chadwick outside Tyler Texas at least twice a year , early 70’s .
Best video tell it like it was...very educational nice job love history 😊
Those cars take me back to my preteen year, were I got hooked drag racing!!! Great video, thanks for sharing!!!
I grew up watching dragracing my dad took me and my brother to a dragstrip called us30 dragstrip my older brother's use to dragrace my older brother had a Nova my other brother had a GTO .my brothers had so many racing cars Plus All there friends had racing cars . there friend called Richie Rich had a 55chevy called Chicago and his friends hank and Dennis had a 69 Camaro called what you see is what you get. There other friend called TV Mike had a dragster . Other friend called cook had a Chevelle .miss those days
👀FAROUT!!! MAN!!!!
I missed "Ron Colson's"
Duel taboo / it was green, and a Corvette!!!
Growing up in the Coachella Valley, a lot of these cars were just 2 hours away.
I was lucky to see a few of them.
(Getting old)(I think)
I was hoping to see a photo of the 1969 Dodge mini charger CHI Town Hustler. Absolutely the baddest funny car that ever existed ! First time it went to the west coast everyone thought it was simply famous for it's burnout. Once the smoke from the burnout cleared everyone watched them walk away with first place. Austin Coil power at its best ! A few pronunciation correctuins:
Ridici and W
ise REE DEE CEE
Romeo Palamedes PAL A MEE DEES
Ron Scrima SCREE MA
Farkonas, Coil and Minick, the baddest of the bad!
I remember The first time the Chi Town Hustler came to Lions drag strip . There ramp truck had little tombstones painted on the side with the names of the cars they had beat!
Cool to hear about what I remember. Seems like a lot of people forget about those days.
How did you get all that information.
I'm an old dude. I'm digging this stuff.
Yeah, likewise.
By today's standards, low 7 second runs at 180-200 mph seems unremarkable, Pro Stock cars surpassed that performance level years ago, BUT, these early cars were wild and wooly, loud and pretty. I attended shows at York US30 Dragway in York, Pa in the late 60's and early 70's and these cars were awesome. The pits were unencumbered with cordoned-off cars, everything was out in the open, you could talk to the drivers. Once, I saw a fan assist Shirley Muldowney pack her chute, I stood a few feet from "Jungle Jim" Liberman as he removed his spark plugs after a run (he tossed one to me while it still too hot to hold comfortably, I wish I still had it), Tommy Ivo gave me and 3 of my buddies his freshly torn blower belt which we took to metal class and cut it into four equal pieces. It was a great time.
Engine tech as well as better tires that is it.
It's funny to think there are street legal cars running faster times nowadays
I was there 100 + funny cars and the fox hunt . OCIR was the best times 1975 on
The Centerline Pie Pan wheel really uglied up drag racing. Funnies look stupid without spokes & slots.
👌👏
I like the AFX and SFX cars better.
Any idea who ran a 119" Logghe Pro Stage II with a Strange Engineering rear end, that had Ford DRUM Brakes? This is my car I bought 10+ years ago and still trying to find out whose car it was.
The main comment here is the one describing "Fast Eddie Schartman" total cost for that ready to 69 funny car 20,000.00....the modern day cookie cutter carbon fiber bodies alone 70,000.00.....this is why I thumb my nose at the modern racing world....no matter if it's roundy round or straight line....it's all a deep pocket ass kissing corporate B.S. scham
Your so right. Big corporate money ruined drag racing especially the professional categories. The 1000 foot deal in TF and FC really spoiled it also. Drag Racing is 1320 feet not 1000 feet. The NHRA has gone way down hill also. Even back in 76 I always heard Jungle telling people how much he hated the NHRA and I can understand why even back then.
Great photos. There were plenty of Chevys running Chrysler Hemis back in the day. But not the other way around...
Shirley Muldoney is my ex girlfriend 😭...lol !! 😁
You're kidding 🙂
Saw her run that car at Tri Cities dragway in Saginaw Michigan!!!!😂😂😂😂😂
My wife has one of her pro-stocks, 68 coronet r/t
Like photos turn volume down.
please show the Alabamain/alabamian ? chasis by the latr cecal hicks race cars
Too many California and almost nothing of the early days when there was real innovation
CHRYSLER IS NHRA...😅 TAKE THAT ALL YOU WEAK GM LS WANNA BE...😢
Thanks for the memories
We lived through the best years in history if you were born in the 59s you were lucky no woke bullshit in that era
Always good to hear a shot out to my Hometown the first car the bounty hunter Connie Kalitta Saginaw Michigan. Actually sitting in oscoda right now where he runs his air freight service
