During the 1980`s SE Racing made Landing Gear Forks with holes for 10mm axles that were Key-Holed shaped for 14mm Top Hat Washers before 14mm axles existed.
Hoffman Released the Gack Hubs in 94 it was said to be the first 14mm axle hub according to there website. but KHE had 12mm-14mm free-coasters in 91-92
12mm gack had to get new bearings
That’s true. It took awhile before it was a standard. Then it went to 14mm axles front/rear. I believe primo tried 12mm axles on their coaster. I have one but it has a slightly bent axle.
@@jopac75 You rode em like me you bent them like me we know whats up Did you ever have the kink 3/8 hardened front axles I did so boss
@@wakingbadtarot I might have 1 but I can’t remember. I had gotten a hookup at a shop who sold me a bunch of various axles from Standard Industries, Haro, Peregrine and a few others. I would mostly run the Standard ones for my Peregines.
It was Chris gack that made 14 mm standard not the first at all
Love these midschool vids. I rocked a Kink 'Fiend' signature model when I was a kid. I remember jumping a nice parking lot to lower lot gap on it as a kid, and funny enough I work at the building that owns that lot now. I have also ridden my 26 Kink 'Drifter' to work before. Keeping it full circle.
Jump the gap on the way to work, really bring that full circle home🤘
I believe the Hoffman Gack hubs were the first 14mm hubs.
say they were but they werent like most "pioneers"
He’s back at it again, glad to have you back.
Nice midschool ride! I didn't have a Link Empire but I do own a 98 Spooky Underdog. Spooky was building great frames in the late 90's
Those dropouts are so big, they double as hub guards 😂
That was what they were designed for tho!
Lol
Miss y’all!
I had hyper bmxs in the late 90s with flat 14mm axles. The dropouts were 3/8.
This thing is wicked! Thanks for sharing this hard to find bike.
Kink pegs sparked better than every other peg... that was a selling point for the shop I went to, it worked too! I still have some along with the rear wheel tensioners, that the kink pegs would lock into.. Sweet stuff
Kink pegs were the best. Other companies had all that fancy chrome shit with tapering and lines, and then kink had just a raw black normal peg that looked street af lol
Those big sprockets ate many a pair of pants.
RIP Torpey. We miss you bro
I always remember the Hoffman’s having 14mm, haro had 14mm, the heavy heavy schwinns had them also. Free agent was running 1/2” axles. We had a KHE in the group with 14mm also. That bike is badass. At the time, S&M, kink, standard, we the people, DK were all high end super tough bikes. Then the usual haro, Schwinn and GT stuff was getting heavier also. The one that I always wanted was the Poverty G Ride. Absolute tank. Came with a 3 piece poverty crank, 14mm axles and Alex triple wall rims. You couldn’t kill that bike. Pretty rare to see one. I put KHE wheels on my Trek Vert and had to grind out the dropouts. I was like 13. Before that, I tacoed every 3/8 axle I ever had. Then I got a 2001 haro Mira 540 air. That bike was tight and tough.
9/16" axle was a standard
I remember. Cool thing about the way the frame is pierced is that if the welds were to fail it would fail at those pierced parts, front bottom headtube, top connection to seat tube. And because of the there's no way the frame would fall apart. It would start together enough to save yo butt.
Fun vid
Nice!!!! Me and my homeboy spoon rode the kink fiends but they snapped.
I went and got Stephen Murrays bike after his crash in baltimore ,Boxed it up and shipped it ,His team manager promised oh ill take care of you ...Never did .Almost got robbed when I went to get the bike .You did a good thing .
oh man! im loving these hens teeth builds. Stay rad Epic peeps.
Damn the odyssey 99er seat! When i was building a red/black theme back in like 99, i saw that seat in a todd lyons bike check and copped it from danscomp. Also had shimano dx brakes and JNCO stickers inspired by the Wildman. Eventually v brakes werent cool no more and i got a general lee
Well that dropout protector as he called it. I seem to remember those big steel washers were used on frames that had thin dropouts. When you landed on your peg to grind the weak axle would less likely bend as well as the dropout because of the steel washers.
I used to have that same rod seat post. Primo and odyssey have always been my favorite brands
I think Gack made the first 14mm hub for Hoffman in 1993/94. Not 100% on that but I’m fairly sure that was the first.
This is what I was thinking. With those sick gold axles.
I had a bunch of kink parts back then. The kink pegs were a go to since they made sparks fly when you hit a ledge fast. Haven't seen a kink empire in a long ass time. I rode a kink fiend for several years and it was definitely the best frame I ever rode. Beat the absolute dog shit out of it.
Love seeing the history of bmx frames and how far they’ve come. It’s sad to hear about the circumstances of this bike.
There was a 1/2 inch front and rear axle which was found on turn of the century Mongoose`s and Haro`s. If you ever lose one of those axle nuts they are near impossible to replace....
I had a link fiend. Loved that bad ass frame
F*ck yeah! Dave Young sig! Had him sign a misfits shirt in like 2000 at a primo contest at skate street in Ventura (he used the Crimson ghost skull as the decals) super nice dude. Way ahead of his time.
Cool bike, I have a Empire Revision B I have half built. Loki g for more Kink parts to finish it.
Khe or hoffman came out with the early 14 mm axles i remember cutting my mk 2 condor to make it fit in the mid 90s lol i remember haveing a havok sprocket pocket on my kink disc .
Love the kink bike the peirced tube reminds me of a vdc or a vincent 🤘
Noone knows more about Bmx than phu!!! 🙌🙌 Bmx yoda
Eastern Hercules was cool too...Looking for a king liberty or kink fiend
I still have an old kink chain tensioner in my tool box. It’s been in there for about 20 years
Welcome back Master Phu!!!!
Phu never left!
@@AlfredoMancuso you said he was locked up in the last video!
Very nice. I still have my kink revision B
Back when Kinks were made in USA! I was so glad they stopped using 3/8 dropouts on frames. Too many broken axles from grinding. I went with Peregrine Phat Jack wheels for awhile when they had 3/8 bc they were slotted 14mm so could fit a 3/8 drop. I had the Kink Cielencki. A little newer like mid 2000s before Jim started Sunday. And what do you know, I ride a Sunday now. Isn’t that special? (Dana Carvey, church lady) Lol.
Tried to get my kid a Sunday for Xmas, had to settle for a kink (he's too young for it to make much of a difference) they're still nice bikes.
@@skeetorkiftwon Nice, I really like the Williams complete. Great bike for the money. I ride a Sunday Nightshift frame. Pretty much the same one Aaron Ross rides except mine is black, his is the light pink one.
Schwinn XS were my first 14mm axle around 98. I had to file my frame out.
Really kewl looking frame.
nice work kink always
Damn, I ran Pitch Forks and that gnarly Kink sprocket on my S&M Dirt Bike, with 3/8 Kink axels.
Seems like 14mm axels became popular around ‘97 or ‘98.
Tight 😎 💯
What about a colin winkleman, SOB
And a joey garcia El Jefe
I had the KINK chain wheel. 44T 1/4 thick aluminum.
I want that seat!
My old boss had one...he sold it....holy cow spooky spooky
I remember having 3/8 dropouts and upgrade my axles to 14mm flat and do a little grinding on the dropouts but I don’t know who came out with the 14mm standard
Bmx history!
Those dropouts are like built in hub guards
Ah the Revision-B.... Phu hooked it up with one of these BITD for cheap, only reason I wanted it was the ads on RideBMX back cover every month. The flat black paint flaked off just by looking at it, comes in at #3 of the worst riding frames I ever rode behind #1 Next Gen Dirtbike and #2 FBM Deployer. Can't remember if I broke it (maybe cracked the TT?) but I do remember throwing it in the dumpster very satisfying!
I would love for Phu, to show a mid 2000s flatland "Ares bikes" era build and show the tech improvement from the 90s?
10:15 think that would be to keep the little 3/8 axle from bending ?
The kink pegs had a life time warranty and were the first peg to spark during grinds back then
Phu the Eastern Hercules also did the head tube through the down and top
The bmx museum has a few pics with this frame.
Welcome back Phu! Cool video.
dang i didnt know kink was that old, cool
I have a Kink i-beam headset lock from 1996 that should be on that bike.
Nice bike the frame reminds of my HARO 540 air I have and the also the other model flair of having the back top tube going threw the seat post and sticking out and the big dropouts mines a 2001 HARO 540 air Dave Mirra signature series with both front and rear 14mm axles and dropouts I don’t remember who came out with 14mm axles first dang and also I need a front brake it has Brake mounts on the front fork will Odyssey Springfield brakes fit on the fork
Cheetah dab frame, only comparable dropout size i can think of from that era, but they were all huge. I rode a S&M warpig for years back in the day, sooo over built, the 2-hip pork was absolutely ridiculous as well.
My GT with Hutch cranks that were 180mm, the front sprocket was 44 and the free wheel was a 17 I think...
45t sprocket? Looks huge and I'm old skool!
No clue the rim, b ut dad got it for me cause they told him i couldn't bent it. Larger spokes, Axle, and stronger rim. 80's so i have no idea a name. 49 i am lucky i know my name. It weighed a Ton though. I love my Bike now.... These new ones are SICK. 21 tt i have bars back, Manuals are getting closer. Fakies are almost done. Then 180's. Pegs are fucking with me, i tried first time hopping up on curb and about pulled my shoulder out LOL i stoppped then watched some your old videos to see you do it, and how i was leaning wrong. LOVE BMX for LIFE>
The s&m next generation stuff was pretty beefy too.
To cool man!!
Dope I love kink
💯
I love punctuation!
Back in the day Redline cranks were nice
That is the same frame I have with the kink sprocket and big chain. I had a low number frame but it had a defect in the welding of the rear drop outs. So I had to send it back and get a replacement.
I would send a picture but where do I send?
I think Haro had the first 14mm axle/dropouts.( Khe had 14mm hubs in the early 90s.) '96 Blammo
is 14 or 3 8 newer?
@@user-gk5je9wu4u 14mm is newer, 3/8 has been around for ever
Lets goo!
👊🏻👊🏻
What the Phu !!
That is such a sick bike!!💯
Kink empire, legendary....next do an eastern Hercules
Not sure who came out with 14mm but at the time of the kink empire, most bikes had 14mm rear...standard was the bike company who didn’t switch and people used to ride slotted 14mm axles
Oooohhhhhh
Ppl who rode standards back in the day r still savages in my eyes
Volume flatline
Kink 2hip and Eastern all used to put the head tube through the down tube and or the top tube
GT pierced the seat post in the late 80's. 45t sproket why?
Kink made some of the best pegs even though the light pegs cracked easy
12mm hoffman gack hubs first come on guys
97 Haro Supra DLX 14mm F/R
Sweet!
Do video on what years are considered old school, mid school, new school...and how to measure your bottom bracket
Cool man
I had 3 of these 2 blue one red and a kink chain
Primo bomb freecoasters hub 14mm Axle and need bigger spoke also.
Ayeeeee new vid 👊
Edit: I know here’s not the place to ask but do you know anywhere where they have the sabotage sprocket in black 25t? Thanks
Phu has some here
@@AlfredoMancuso if it’s possible how can I get it cuz the site says sold out
Pretty sure Greg Walsh had one, if not this one on road fools 2. I think jimmy jumped it off a roof into a pool in San Francisco.
And how much it weights?
It has a built in hun guard in the drop out lol
Where is your shop located?
looks more like a mid 80's VDC Voris Dixon Company . vdc never had gussets . all i know about the wheel spindle is it was always 10mm 3/8th through the whole of the 80's we bent or snapped them all the time
Hey Phus back from jail. He can’t be hitting people with them sandals
The kink pegs slid so good . I still have my kink fiend
Is that a skillsaw blade??? Oh wait it’s a sprocket nvm Lolol 😂
Frame is like an old huffy or old khe frames maybe warpig not sure on the brand
If I remember right the sprocket also came with two stickers.
The First 14mm axles was Hoffman bikes 93/94.
What's the name of this bmx store I want to order parts from him
I actually have that kink sprocket in a 33t.
Also eastern Hercules pierced top tube
The very first kink frame was called the freebird
Man I been trying to find some og kink pegs for my warpig
Literally first top 10 to comment
Gentleman and a scholar
@@AlfredoMancuso nah definitely not. Imma dawg and a man out the trenches. We out here boi
Wow my faith in kink restored very nice bike , the launch is a far cry from that empire what a bomb 💣 proof Betty 👌🏻keep em comin fellas
Most "new school" bikes will end up in the scrap metal pile, because "normal" riding destroys the bike and the parts with all the grinding.
Not sure who made the first 14mm dropout,, but I know 1991 is when they started.
