    Thanks for the review, new sub.
    1] I have found that both carbon and ss Moras often hold a better edge after the first couple of sharpenings. My theory is that their automatic equipment burns the edge slightly and once you've gotten through that layer the steel is a bit harder, tougher, and stronger.
    2] I have both the Kansbol and the Garberg. The Kansbol has the same co-molded type of handle you describe on the Eldris with softer TPE/rubbery material over the harder core material (similar to the recent 'Pro' utility knives). I do find it grips better than the straight-up hard plastic, but it probably isn't quite as durable.
    3] A lanyard can be really handy on a smaller knife if you are doing a lot of work with cordage, lashing up some bushcraft fabrication. It can dangle from your wrist while you're working and be right at hand to cut your cordage - just be very careful if you try this. (credit: Mors Kochanski).
    Cheers!

    My favorite knife. I whittle, and carve mostly with my eldris. The lanyard hole is absolutely necessary for me, it’s difficult to pull out of the sheath without a little cordage.

    They tried selling the Eldris for 40$$ here in germany, which is nearly the price for a Bushcraft Black (45$$), so barely anyone bought it and now they went down with the prices to 25$$ :D

      I resisted it for a long time due to pricing. Its essentially just the tip of a kansbol afterall. At €18 I finally bought it. I have mixed feelings about the actual usefulness of a knife like this over a regular Mora.

    Here in the UK the Eldris currently retails for £30, compared to the Pro S for £10. The difference is not because the Eldris is new but because it's aimed at a different demographic and Mora seems to be under the impression it can gouge it. If you think about the Eldris as a tool and not as a piece of Bushcraft bling it's way overpriced.

    • @CedricAda
      @CedricAda  8 лет назад +1

      yeah, you'd probably still be better off getting a classic or a companion and wearing that around your neck if you want the most mora for the money. This current series of moras is really aimed at the western market who are currently really digging full tangs, flat spines, combo grinds and neck knives.

    • @ComUnSas
      @ComUnSas 8 лет назад +1

      I think I've mentioned this before on your channel but Mora sells working knives to people in construction and agriculture, they're the 'cheap', time-tested, practical knives, and more recently to outdoor hobbyists. That's where things start to get a little silly afaic. Personally, I'm happy with the first line of knives. If hobbyists want a premium-priced, day-glo, compound-ground, full tang neck knife that doubles as a whistle and fire-starter, it's their money so good luck to them afaic.

      that might have something to do with brexit and the GBP being really low, which might be impacting the prices of imported goods. In Poland, the basic version (without the kit) is 99 PLN, which is approximately 20 GBP.

    • @ComUnSas
      @ComUnSas 8 лет назад +2

      It could do, but people in the UK get gouged on certain goods even when the pound has been strong. Some people joke and say that they are living on 'Treasure Island'. The key to my criticism is the relative pricing. The new Eldris is 3x more than the new-ish Pro S.

    • @jakubfabisiak9810

      round here it's about twice what you pay for a companion, and the us street price is around $22 as well - shame you got shafted, mate, but in all honesty, I think at 22 dolarydoos, it is well worth the money. At 35-40 dollars, you might want to buy one of the 60mm puuko knives, from a number of manufacturers.

    I just recently bought one (a bit under 30€) and despite its overpricing, I find it really sturdy and comfortable little necker. The handle provides nice grip, although I have small-ish hands for a man, so with larger hands it might be uncomfy. It certainly does its task as a knife thats always on hand for smaller tasks, such as skinning game or gutting fish.

      I have a Garberg also. Although I admit I haven't tried it in truly difficult conditions it is pretty grippy when wet. Maybe less than the composites you talk about (My Eldris should arrive tomorrow *happy dance*) but I have actually been impressed with the checkered grip on the Garberg. I am used to more traditional handles of hardwood or micarta but really I don't see a problem with the Garberg grip. Not soft, but adequate for sure, imo.

    I do landscaping on an 8600 acre property in Texas. I work with plants and trees all day, and I have virtually every Mora worth having for a workin' man. Garberg, Robust, Bushcraft (but not the Bushcraft Survival...yet), Kansbol, Heavy Duty, Heavy Duty Military, Scout, Classic 3, Rope Knife, and none of these seem to equal the ease of use of the Outdoor 2000. I'm also going to get the Allround, which has had great reviews. That being said said, I get my Eldris (yellow) tomorrow! Impulse purchase, y'know.
    But do yourself a favor, get an Outdoor 2000. I loaned mine to a friend who is an avid Hunter, and he skinned out a Texas feral hog without sharpening it, and said he could have skinned another without sharpening it.

  • @eachday9538
    @eachday9538 8 лет назад +7

    That steel might be ok on hardwoods when it isn't used in a knife with a low edge angle scandi grind. I'm pretty sure the edge angle of the scandi continues on around below the secondary bevel at the front, and that you would just maintain the same sharpening angle all the way around. William Collins does a similar grind to this on some of his knives and makes a point of this for those concerned about a fiddly sharpening procedure.

    • @CedricAda
      @CedricAda  8 лет назад +1

      Everyday Adventure yeah, I think the absolute scandi edges are worn beat by tool steels and carbon steels. The spyderco puuko style folder with the absolute scandi (forgot its name) runs S30v and manages a lot better. Even looking at my companion, which is in 12c27 like this, theres waves and bumps everywhere. Its just so easy to sharpen its not too bothersome. My carbon mora in its 1085-1095 series equivalent is much better at wearing absolute scandi. A microbevel may have been called for here.

    The hard plastic handle on the Garberg doesn't have that rubber layer because they are expecting that you may batton the handle. Not much chance that you'll batton the Eldris. (I have both.)

    A few licks on my Kalamazoo 1x42" belt sander with the leather strap and green compound, would fix that worn edge right up. It seems the conventional wisdom about Mora steels is they specialize in shaping and hardening their proprietary stainless blades, but they offer a softer carbon option for those who need an easy-to-sharpen knife. You should test the two common Mora steels side by side to see if that relationship is correct. thx - Z

  • @rogeriosartori555

    The Eldris never intended to be a neck knife. Mora claims it's a pocket or a rucksack knife. It is very good for carving. It happens it has a "neck kit" you can buy so the people call it wrong.

    That's the problem I have with this knife - it's price. I don't see any reason for it to cost as twice as much as Companion. You pay more for less, that doesn't make any sense. In the given situation I would always choose Companion over Eldris, it's common sense. I think Moraknive has became a little bit greedy.

  • @AaronIsaak47
    @AaronIsaak47 8 лет назад

    Yeah Im not sure why they are going so crazy on releasing stainless steel in all their new product lines when their traditional carbon steel is better, Ive found 12c27 to be okay with a micro bevel but on a zero scandi it simply folds over time wheras the Carbon seems tougher and stays sharper. Great idea for a neck knife but im happier with a companion, LMF or classic around my neck.

    I agree with your observations. I do not see a real value in the way they have an extra grind level on the tip. I do not like the Mora stainless steel at all - it is far too soft unless you are working solely with softwoods like Pine. Too bad it didn't come in Carbon Steel.

    Say Heah, This beauty would sure go great with the Mora Cansbol, I really never got into Mora Knives until recently when I bought my Mora 510, I really wanted the older version, But no regrets with the newer one, Infact it's one of my Fav. neck knives and I wear it with alot of my more robust knives, When I bought my 510, I also got the Classic #1, only to find out its the same blade as my 510, But as I was browsing, They had a special price on the 2000 and the Hatchet, But the special price was only on the Orange color, I later found out the Bacho Laplander also comes in orange, If only I knew that when I changed the order and got the Green color so the Trio matched, If is half of (L IF e) go figure. Anyhow, a few days later I found the Forest Exclusive Series, So I got the #277 because the Forest Exclusive 311 was discontinued and I really wanted that one, But when I got my. What a beautiful Knife, It's Handmade with a Laminated Blade, But the Bolster and Pommel are Brass and the handle is a beautiful hardwood, Simply TiT's, Beautiful, Oh, and a very nice leather sheath. I wear it as a neck knife also. It looks like a slender Classic #1, But it still fits my hand great, and I wear a large glove. Yeah, I think I'm getting the Cansbol and I'm teaming it up with the Eldris, I like small knives. It's like taking the front part of a Knife, and the closer your hand is to your work, The better your control. I just teamed a Bokor Coye Ridgeback with my Benchmade Arvensis 119 for my wet and snowy weather use. I also attached my Classic #1 to the handle strap on my Bokor Black Rold. Because the handle strap was loose on account the shape of the handle on my Rold, after I put a nylon belt loop on my Rold SHEATH, Because the way it was, it was dangerously loose, and I did injure my foot badly one morning as I was getting ready to go on a weekender. The two fit perfectly, and I'm sort of proud how it turned out, I also attached a Wenger Pouch, It's, Aces, It's always nice to see you and your videos.

    Pro's-it's not bad for making bow drill sets & and is compact, Cons-it's not great for making feather-sticks and is hard on the hand if doing larger tasks due to it's shorter strokes. Me, I don't like the grind, but it's a great knife for small jobs, & obviously overall it's not as good as the Blacks or Garbergs, still worth having tho.

    I want one to possibly have a Garberg with the Eldris piggy back kydex sheath with it.....I love Garberg mate, I think you should have used it more, the handle does get better after use, mine feels really nice now. The polymers they used for it are different then most, its very dense and gets a texture to it after awhile, plus the shape of the grip becomes addictive.

      I am looking for a neck knife that I can wear while sailing. I am learning how to race on a small sail boat, where capsizing is common. There is a possibility of getting caught up in the various sailing lines while underwater . Thus some sort of knife that you can carry on body is important. Blade length is irrelevant. I already own and trust Moras, so this is looking like a perfect product for my specific need. But I suspect that is why they cost so much: the demand is low, so the price is high!

    • @WasabiWei
      @WasabiWei 5 лет назад +1

      @@clydeosterhout1221 I like the Eldris, but in your situation, I would want at least a 3" blade to ensure a clean cut in one pass. Mora makes cheaper knives more suited to your application. The round blade profile will probably let rope roll off before it is cut all the way. This is pure conjecture, but I think you need a sharp knife with a little length and a square tip. Sailors always have the tip snapped off. This would be better than the Eldris for boat life, there might be a better one, check out the lineup. www.amazon.com/Morakniv-Craftline-Carpentry-Chisel-3-0-Inch/dp/B00T3ES1SC/ref=pd_day0_hl_468_2/140-5011496-9583726?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00T3ES1SC&pd_rd_r=e64aa1b9-3e4f-11e9-adc1-07d663083cc6&pd_rd_w=IX2Ol&pd_rd_wg=oJGvw&pf_rd_p=ad07871c-e646-4161-82c7-5ed0d4c85b07&pf_rd_r=9GPP7BC4B6B6QB0FY8W2&psc=1&refRID=9GPP7BC4B6B6QB0FY8W2
