      True and true! The engine was developed by both Japanese and American engineers from Honda and Acura. Honda being a Japanese manufacturer. Without Honda, there is no Acura.

    Sporty near-luxury 3-row SUV is a pretty narrow niche but it is one that the MDX Type-S doesn't really share with any other vehicle. The German's more sporty offerings are priced well above this. How many people want a sporty SUV though. I remember when the original with SH-AWD MDX came out Car and Driver said, rhetorically, "who wants to canyon carve in an SUV?"

    • @RoadsUntraveled
      @RoadsUntraveled  27 дней назад +2

      And yet here we are with Lamborghini making the Urus, Audi the RSQ8, and Ferrari the Purosangue. The MDX is leaning luxury over sport in my experience. Massage seats are amazing, materials great, tons of room, etc.

    • @FirstHillSeattle
      @FirstHillSeattle 2 дня назад +1

      Really valid question. Now that SUVs are the majority of car sales (by far) I believe this does fill a niche for some. I happen to be married with no children, but we have two dogs and are in our early 50s. We live quite a distance from both sets of our elderly parents and are often taking road trips with the dogs to check in on them. We currently have an RDX and it has been a wonderful vehicle, but we desire more room when we road trip. And, because our road trips take us through the mountains, we want a car that handles well. If the MDX were a hybrid it would be perfect for us. With that said, the cost of gas isn’t a deal breaker. We have the income to afford a German counterpart, but aren’t particularly interested in those and we don’t like how the XC90 drives (plus it’s just a bit too big). So, we are very close to purchasing a new MDX Type S.

    Nice Aesthetics,
    However, the Drive Train is simply outdated for this Price Point. The BMW X 5 is a better buy hands down. The BMW is faster, handles better and gets better gas mileage. Acura seems to be betting on their reliability ratings in order to attract customers. I own a MDX , so I can objectively say that Acura is “ so close “ to being Great. Acura simply needs to Match the power train performance of BMW, or at least come close. Lastly, the seats in the MDX are good. However, it would be nice if they were Great, like the Seats in the X5.

      X3 is smaller. It works if you don’t need third row. X7 is equivalent to MDX.
      Yes. B58 drivetrain is the best in the car industry now. BMW mastered this amazing drivetrain for past 8 years now.
      BMW Twin turbo V8 are still not as reliable as B58 straight 6. Not yet anyway. Still a fast twin turbo V8.
      Also don’t forget the Audi SQ7 7 passenger. Twin turbo V8 that sounds amazing and has 500hp. Its drivetrain is shared with Audi, Porsche, Bentley, and Lamborghini. That puts a smile on your face. Instant gratification.
      Acura has had a lot of issues. 10 speeds are weak. Lots of quality control issues. That’s why you see a lot of them traded in. Acura also lost the lawsuit on bad engines. Now they have to replace tons of V6’s. Moonroof issues too.
      MDX S is overpriced for what you get. Especially only 355 hp for their top tier.

    XC90 has the best seats in the industry bar non and is achieved through designing great seat architecture. This has always been a Volvo hallmark. But where the XC90 falls short is in the Powertrain department. The 4cyl engine is trash compare to the European in line 6 and even Acura MDX V6 turbo. The Acura MDX can’t match the platform,Powertrain offerings and trim levels of the BMW, Mercedes, Audi because let’s be frank the Acura MDX is front wheel drive trans verse mounted engine architecture. It’s compromised substantially to try to compete with the German rear wheel drive platform architecture. Evidence of this can be found in the number of electrical shenanigans (SH steering, etc.)that Acura has employed throughout the MDX to try to make it a competitor to the BMW, Mercedes, Audi. That being said the Acura MDX does offer a balanced package of an SUV that’s Premium and not a full luxury player. It’s got great styling, premium interior appointments and a nice Powertrain that will not disappoint consumers looking for a premium experience above main stream offerings. So I see it as an alternative to the XC90 or a slight step up from the Mazda CX-90 top line offering.
