- Hello everyone, welcome back to my channel. In today's video which is one of three for painting this bedroom, I'm going to show you how to paint over vinyl silk with matt paint using Tikkurila anti reflex 2 white, and how to prepare the ceiling and walls, where I use my Mirka Laros sander to give the surface a 'key' as well as removing any bits from previous paint that been applied. Then as well I sand the woodwork/trim down by hand ready for painting (woodwork painting is the 3rd video).
First, let's talk about why you might want to paint over vinyl silk with matt paint. Vinyl silk is a type of paint that has a slight sheen to it, which can look nice in some situations. However, if you want a more subtle, matte finish, then you'll need to paint over it with a matt paint.
Any paint with a sheen level will show imperfections up more than a flatter matt finish.
Now, before you start painting, you'll need to prepare the surface. If you're painting the ceiling and walls, then you'll need to clean them thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or grease if there's signs of that being on there. If there are any cracks or holes in the surface, then you'll need to fill them with filler and sand them down until they're smooth.
If you're painting the woodwork trim, then you'll need to sand it down lightly to remove any old paint or varnish. Then, wipe it clean with a damp cloth to remove any dust, which I did.
Once the ceiling surface is clean and smooth, you can start painting. I'm using Tikkurila anti reflex 2 white, which is a high-quality, low-odour matt paint that's great for painting over vinyl silk. It's really good for ceilings. You'll need to stir the paint thoroughly before you start, to make sure it's well mixed, if you need to add some water to air you in applying it just put a bit in at a time till it's how you want it.
Start by cutting in around the edges of the ceiling with a brush, making sure to get into all the corners and edges. Then, use a roller to paint the rest of the surface, working in small sections at a time. Make sure to overlap your strokes slightly, to ensure an even coverage.
Once you've painted the first coat, you'll need to wait for it to dry completely before applying a second coat. Depending on the humidity and temperature in the room, this could take several hours. Make sure to follow the instructions on the paint can for the recommended drying time.
After the second coat is dry, you can step back and admire your handiwork! You should have a beautiful, smooth, matte finish that looks great on your ceiling (or walls if you've done those as well).

Those wall sanders are ridiculous prices for what they are. Great vid
time is money on the time they save you using it.. plus, less dust
I must admit I agree about the switch to water based paints. I miss the build you get from oil...but the benefits of water based outway that. It does take a while to get the right combination (123 is excellent!)..., But once you find it, you won't look back!
Great point!
I like to over exaggerate my cutting in with the mini roller saves bumping ceilings or touching trim with sleeve
You must know that some folk go round with a mini roller because of the cage frame ends of the 12 or 15 they use for the rest of the work ?
That is correct. A lot would be fine with a single end 9"
But with the invention of the social media painters, DIYers are following the lead with longer rollers they don't need for the work they do
@ yes,on a standard living room etc I wouldn’t use anything but a 9. On my bigger jobs though I’m minimum 12 and often I’ll get someone to go round and cut in and make sure they’ve mini rolled out prior to
Doing a nice job there, hope the new tenants will look after it
I hope the increase in rent will sort the bad ones out.
Just matt emulsion never had any issues, you can lightly wet & dry keeping dry as will key without scratching, sanding you can't beat by hand & good workout to boot
I never have any issues with cutting in twice then rolling out to finish. I often have to mist coat seal as mirka revealing high spots in the plaster. It's all in the preparation. I'll use any fresh paint except for old emulsion the client wants to use up that fills up with cornflakes when you take off the lid. Just dropped on an attix 33 on Facebook market place for a ridiculous £60. Was in the way they had a Dyson and didn't use it.
Any tips for applying silk emulsion? Stuff has more patches than I don't know what!
Yeah... Don't use it lol
Use a durable Matt.
Or a finish with only 7% sheen level.
With your silk.
Give it another coat using a medium pipe roller
Thank you for being totally honest about plastering, (baby's bum comment) music to my ears, another tip for anyone other than the pro's, if you doubt this info get a straight edge 6 foot plus bang on straight , try it against the plaster (reality check)
Hi Phil. What about matt over vinyl Silk on blown vinyl wallpaper??
Like we've done for years and years... Just coat it up
Soft sheen/bathroom paint over vinyl silk, works every time.
Hi could do with you advice please, I’ve painted contract Matt 3 to 1 on new plaster then mist coated a bathroom mold inhibitor paint over the contract Matt, it’s only a day old but with a piece of masking tape over it the top coat is coming off in the tape! Have left it long enough to bond or have I made a big mistake 😢
hi, what was the tape for?
what tape was it?
Have you watched my videos on the best paints to use in bathrooms?
Great stuff .lots of information as always.
Glad you enjoyed it
Why are you using 123 on the skirting boards first? Would not for example, just 2 coats Bedec Aqua Advance be ok on any previous wood paint finish?
ruclips.net/video/tSFUSQJF2gw/видео.html
I'm using different paints so everywhere will have the same grip primer that way I can see at the end of the renovation which paint was the best to cover.
mini rollers used to be called rad rollers and we only really used them to get the paint on quickly on doors before laying it off with the brush, but spraying has made them useless
The new age post COVID Painters wouldn't understand where or what you used a rad roller for... The real use for them.
the secrets in the name lol
Hi Phil, I Have to paint an artex ceiling that the previous owners painted with Dulux Vinyl SILK! Obviously it can't be sanded, so a coat of Zinsser 123 first? What is the normal finish for coving and ceilings?
You wouldn't have a problem going over with Matt paint.
It's how we've done it for years.
Thanks Phil. I asked because I thought painting matt over silk leads to cracking and crazing. Is that not the case?
@@WilliamJohnstone-j9z not all the time.
@@WilliamJohnstone-j9z have a look ok at some of the ceiling paints I've tried. Either would work well
Great video!! I've been looking at that mirka sander? Is there any way you can attach the house to a Henry hoover for example?..
Maybe, but the auto turn off on the vac is handy when you stop sanding
You can attach them to a Henry..
@@davewright9312 the filters are not designed for dust, they can clog and cause the machine to burn out
@@Lloyd1885 is that what the mirka rep told you to encourage you to buy their wickedly expensive vacuum?my henry been ok for the last 12 months ...I use the HEPA filter bags and get virtually no dust in the secondary filter...prior to buying the dustless kit the henry used to be attached to a sander with perforated pads and then used to hoover up all the dust on the floor...I predict that the Henry will outlive the mirka
@@davewright9312 I've done the same occasionally too...just going on what I've heard from other trades. Not necessarily mirka, it would be the same for any sander I guess.
I bought a Nilfisk hoover, they are the same thing, they make the mirka units, a lot cheaper than the mirka units too
Good idea using hepa filters though 👍
Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but is there such a thing as non yellowing white gloss paint? I don't care if it's oil or water based as long as it doesn't yellow in a few months...
Morning. Have a look at the playlist I have on product testing... Loads of water based paints have been tried.. I think you'll find one that will interest you.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Thanks Phil. I have been watching your videos and they are excellent.....
Phil how come you haven't taken the wall colour right up to the ceiling edge?
Have you watched the following video yet?
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator I have now 👍 good man, looks much better now
I was just a bit worried as I seen a video saying you should never paint vinyl over contract mat as it may not bond properly, so I tried some green frog tape tonight and just tried it and it peeled off. I haven’t seen your video. Do you think I’ve left it long enough to bond?
What is it you're needing to tape up
A coat of Gardz over cheap contract Matt paint helps
Phil, is the Tik presto filler a fine surface filler? I use the toupret pre mixed fine surface but only after a primary and maybe secondary easi fill. I find it shrinks like buggery otherwise.
Not quite a fine surface, it's not like RedDevil .
Presto F, is a general surface filler. Deep stuff may sink a bit so a second fill may be needed.
If I spot small imperfections on the wall I'd use a fine surface, then spot prime once it dry before touching in
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator thanks Phil 👍
@petra yes it will do if used as a conventional filler. It's best role is after 2 powdered filler coats. I have used it in the past with a hawk and trowel to flatten out old roller stipple and sand down where it was absolutely magnificent.
@petra for small stuff .. RedDevil fine surface... Or a cheaper god option.. Wickes own brand fine surface.. it too is light weight, doesn't weigh much.
Where do you buy the one-time decorators caulk.
Crown and some PaintWell sell it now.
Beckers, hypothetically, what would you do if you’re next tenants painted the whole flat (walls and ceilings) in dark red 2-part epoxy floor paint?
Deposit scheme would be contacted and I'd be requesting the money back to me
How would you rectify it? You’d need a fair few Laros discs- what grit? Could you give an all over sand and then just crack on with some Anti-Reflex 2?
I no what I'd do! I'd shove the 2 part epoxy up there arse and send em out the door!
give it a sand and a get a good key on it.. then line it, making sure you use good tube paste lol
bedec msp goes over oil without sanding phil obviously you would sand it 9/10 but if you on a budget or need to get done in a day it does work it adheres as well as oil eggshell scratch test on the side of the tin with a chisel and i could barley get it off
You're correct
There's lot cheaper wall Sanders than that mirka, can't justify 1k plus for any sander😮
I couldn't handle the Extra weight of the cheaper ones lol
Over a grand for a wall sander ? yet a times still works off painted wooden steps .as a apprentice I used to paint them when the shop was quiet in the winter .as before less talking Phil more practical .and stop plugging paint manufactures unless there paying you ..
I got the dewalt one ... isn't bad atall
Never heard sanding silk to put Matt on 🤔
Only a light going over. Reduces the risk of crazing when the Matt drys out
I agree mirka is overpriced and hyped but it's well worth it to achieve that finish especially on the wood work and no dust makes sense to invest.
Nothing to the price of a "tub of elbow grease" 👍👍🤣🤣 great vid cheers
I've golfers elbow though
Save yourself £992.80 and get down Wickes and pick up a pole sander Phillip! You say the plaster is the plaster at the start and that you’re not going to go over it with a magnifying glass then proceed to stick the Mirka on it 😂
Dustless sanding.... Saving my lungs for when I get the tile cutter out lol
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator A mirka rep told me at a trade show You only get 1 pair of lungs... best sales line ever.
How can you argue with that...😂
a decent mask is £50 ;0
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator £50?! You can get a pack of 2 for less than a fiver in Toolstation
@@gdpaintingdecorating5704 I said a decent mask. LoL
Had to use hand sander... Options too expensive, reviews not encouraging, and far too heavy.
Equipment envy...
Ide rather rub the walls down by hand than pay them prices for a sander day light robbery
Time saved is money well spent. The profit return is soon felt.
You still have lots of fiddly bits to sand after you use the mirka. Always gets rid of the same mistakes, roller pile texture and drag, drips under ceiling line where they haven't pulled the paint, brush marks around the switches and sockets. Had my Ceros for ten years amazing kit.
Hopefully you are reading all the comments mirka uk. Had 3 sanders go wrong and your parts prices make them through away. Disappointing and won’t buy anything else from the company.
you talk too much about things that are irrelevant.
never mind, you can always pop over to TikToc to learn new stuff, where they're not a lot of talking.
Too much looking and listening to your face.
