The fact that Duran had his first ever fight at middleweight against the greatest middleweight in history in his prime, and went 15 rounds, is one of the many reasons he is the greatest of all time
An argument can certainly be made, but I'm not taking Duran over the Marvelous one as all-time great Middleweights go. Lightweight is a different conversation.
P4P Mayweather could hang with anyone. Hagler was too big for him- though Duran started lighter weights, his style could move to middleweight better and his body filled out. If P4P, Mayweather would outbox Hagler easy. Duran is a different problem though
@ronmcdaniel7114 maybe, but Duran is an elite fighter with brawling pressure style that has troubled MW. So style wise, talent wise and everything that comes with being great means Duran would likely be a problem. I don't think Duran would be like Canelo vz MW as he is more of a pressure fighter than Canelo- that can box. But I still pick MW

@@jason-hy8ci I'm more than sure and probably Hagler vs Mugabi, has been one of the most greatest fight in Marvin intere career. But during the eight rounds before the end by KO, Marvin has NEVER been in a minimum trouble like instead happened vs Hearns. Thomas Hearns had some interesting comments on this fight. Nobody else could have had the perspective he brought to the discussion. Hagler had knocked him out and he in turn had l knocked out Duran. “Marvin showed him way too much respect,” he said, indicating he thought Hagler could have and should have thrown caution to the wind and simply over powered Duran.. Hauler’s take was also interesting. He explained that he expected a biased decision, and felt the safest route to victory was to outbox Duran.
I agree with Tommy. Marvin was too respectful. I think he should have fought Duran like he fought Tommy. You give an older fighter the pace he wants he won’t look old. You need to gas them early.
When Duran fought Hearns he had been partying in Miami. Hearns agent approached Duran in a nightclub and asked him if he would fight Hearns and Duran replied, 'get me 100 thousand dollars right now in cash and I'll sign the contract' which he did! If you look at the fight you can see at the beginning that Duran isn't the same, didn't even get off the stool and the commentator mentioned it. Wasn't the same fighter that fought Hagler. And even more interesting is that Hagler said when he fought Duran himself that Duran was a shell of a fighter yet Duran went 15 rounds with him. And another interesting fact is that Barkley knocked out Hearns and took his middleweight title, then the 37 year old in shape Duran battered Barkley and took the crown off him! Duran was known for partying especially after big wins. After he took Leonards crown he partied hard and ballooned in weight. Leonard said he knew and started training again immediately while Duran was partying because there was a 6 month rematch clause. Then we seen the 'no mas' happen!
I agree with Hearns, while watching the fight I couldn't believe how much Hagler was holding back, boxing as if Duran were the stronger, more dangerous fighter. And Hagler's reasoning doesn't make any sense! If he felt there would be bias against him, you don't go for a decision, you go for the KO
All I can say is that Duran wasn’t a kind of fighter that you could try to do that, if you watch the 2-3 rounds even his corner told Marvin not to do such thing cause he was missing a lot of punches and paying the price. Duran nailed him pretty good, Roberto was very slick. That’s why I think

Marvin Hagler had a freakishly thick skull.......this was confirmed by several doctors......so it was like he was literally fighting with a helmet on. Which is why he could walk right through hard punches. Also, the sheer tenacity and aggression Hagler had due to him feeling he was overlooked and underappreciated made him a spectacular fighter. He waded through Thomas Hearns hardest shots and destroyed him. Ray Leonard ONLY beat Hagler on points, had Leonard went toe to toe, power to power he would have been knocked out. Hagler was one of the greats for sure.
The only con he has is that he always waited for the small guy to move up to his weight. But he never moved up to challenge the champion of the next weight class. This is why I rank Duran higher than him.
@@potentially__9445 I'm not so sure about that. He ate a lot of punches when he fought on the outside. There were several rounds that Hagler edged out but were close. I think Hagler fought a hell of a fight and was smart about it.
Yeah your right. I wish in this fight Duran would of thrown more right hands with conviction to really hurt Hagler. Kind of frustrating fight to watch because your waiting. And on Haglers part he must of felt something early on from Duran to say, this guy can hit let me play it safe and box him.
