Funny isn't it? When Tyson beat Ruddock, Ruddock was a great fighter. When Lewis beat Ruddock with ease...Ruddock wasn't a great fighter. The American narrative strikes again. Lewis to this day has never received the credit he deserved for one simple reason. He wasn't an American. I've seen interviews with Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and a few others where they talk about heavyweight boxing history and not one of them will mention Lennox Lewis unless they're pressed on it and even then they try to avoid the subject. I can remember Larry Merchant at the time asking why the American fighters including Mike Tyson and Riddick Bowe seemed to be avoiding Lewis. Which they did. For me, Lewis is in the top 2 or 3 of all time.

I remember the fight well. It was 1987 and I watched it on closed circuit at Maple Leaf Gardens. It was packed and I was surrounded by both Hagler and Leonard fans. To this day, I believe Hagler won this fight. The more powerful blows came from Hagler and Leonard’s flurries usually at the end of the rounds did not affect Marvin in the slightest. Afterwards Hagler said Leonard fought like a “girl” and was not willing to trade punches with him. Unfortunately Hagler could not connect with the knock out blow he wanted to land. If you look at his previous fights, his opponents would crumple after getting hit. Leonard was lucky that he managed to avoid the knockout and stay on his feet. I invite anyone else to add their comments if they saw the fight differently.
