I believe carbonizing steel makes it harder not stronger. It's been a while since I've looked into metallurgy since most things can be made from the same few common types of steel or their relative standard equivalents.

The sky is strongly polarized 90° from the Sun, so when the sun is low on the horizon, or slightly below the horizon, but obscured by clouds, the Sunstone can determine its position by observing the polarization of the sky directly overhead, which is 90° from the Sun. I’ve experimented with this and found it to work, though it’s not super-precise.
