I am guilty. I used to drive an old VW van with a face painted on the front. The manager/owner of the store I bought groceries at drove a Rolls Royce. (seriously) He would park it waaaay out by itself. I would always very carefully park next to it. I would be about halfway to the entrance when I would see the guy running out to his car. I’m a girly girl but I love working on my cars with my father. I recently bought a 1974 TR6 with a great frame but horrible paint and interior. I’ve never approached a car in such bad condition. I was at a loss of where to start. I started here but with advanced interior work. I look forward to seeing the other videos. Plus you are straight forward and don’t have half dressed women washing the cars with dumb music. Which to me screams unprofessional and inferior product. Thanks

Great video as always Larry! The step by step guide pdf is smart and it makes us think more about detailing rather than rushing in thinking "man I gotta wash my car quick!". A lot of the techniques you've demonstrated I've used for a while now and it is good to know I've been doing things ok on my cars. But what blew my mind was hydrating the microfibre towels in order to dry the car. I've never seen that before and have always used dry towels to wipe down after a wash. Your method has really made me stop and think about that. I will be adding the hydrate method to the toolkit for sure!

Thank you so much for making this video! I've had so many questions (ranging from the basics) when considering to detail my own car the RIGHT way. Forums just don't do it for me and most of the time they derail from the thread topic. I even heard myself "Oh guilty of that... that too..." as I watched. lol You are right about all the different products that are out there. It can make detailing daunting. "What's the first step? Am I doing it right? Wait... this first or that? Why is my wax already hard?! hmm..." I'll be sure to order your products used in this video for sure. I'm very much interested in starting my own auto detail service. Starting out locally of course. Thanks again!!

    Best videos everm
Ive had almost all old cars with terrible paint and have washed most of them with one bucket method or even sometimes waterless spray and wipes. And I regret it all because I had to spend years compounding and polishing and waxing to correct what washing them properly to begin with would've prevented. Keep your tools clean and be gentle with touching all surfaces to keep everything undamaged and scratch free

I managed detail departments within dealerships for years. I trained my guys in great detail. My philosophy was that you win or lose the detail in the wash bay-the more time you spend prepping the car, the less time you spend down the line. My preparation was legendary. Good job my friend

How would you clean the gauge cluster? Scratched mine while cleaning the interior and I'm pretty sure a plastic polish would be good. But for future reference so it won't happen or lessen the scratches.

The problem with polishing gauge clusters is that they can have anti-glare or anti-reflection coatings on them from the factory which you will strip off.

Um, that clear coat bra material is NOT 13 mm thick...Im sure you are thinking of 13 MICROmeters...which is 1.3 mm. Apart from that nitpicking, I have been watching your vids for years and it they helped me tremendously with my cars and understanding of the issues that amateur "detailing" can/will cause. Couldn't agree more with the positive comments below on the quality and generosity of the car care expertise you share with newbie detailers and DIYers Larry. It is individuals like yourself who exemplify the true meaning of the words "professional" and "maestro".
To follow on your references to Pareto's rule, advances in tools, cleaner chemistry and microfibers have replaced brute force in car detailing. I respectfully suggest you emphasize the "leverage" provided by the intelligent and controlled application of water, particularly using the correct nozzle and a good flexible industrial grade hose. Water is as much a universal "abrasive & polish" as well as a lubricant.

I have a Honda Pressure Washer just for doing the car with the wide fan tip. I filled up the soap reservoir with car-wash soap so after rinsing I click on the blue tip to apply the soap. Then using a very soft plush mit quickly go around the body and lightly scrub the soap. Then after rinsing I use an electric driveway/leaf blower to blast away excess water, followed up with a microfiber towel to finish. Then I drive around the block to spin out and get any remaining water. The Pressure Washer also uses a very small amount of water, but it sure can blast all of the brake dust from the wheels. After that I use a mild cleaner on the wheels after the car is back in the garage. I've been doing this for 20 years and the car looks almost new, no swirl marks at all.

Fixing up my old car to sell and used clay for the very first time. Paint seemed all rough and gritty. After clay barring the car it came out looking like glass.
