  • Whilst Miura usually hits the mark on the majority of the characters he has crafted in Berserk, there are rare times when there is a character with a lot of potential which just never gets fulfilled.
Azan is one such character in my humble opinion, and this is what will be discussed in this video.

Yeah its weird that Azan is now just cool with Guts and joins the journey almost no questions asked. Miura could’ve given a short speech of Azan wanting to fullfill his loyalty to Farnese or maybe even trying to get convert her back to religion you know some kinda motive. Hopefully him and Isma get a little more depth as the story goes.

Anyone ever watch "Gargoyles" back in the 90s? I wanted Azan to be the "Hudson" of Guts' party. The old, wise man-type. He could offer his worldly advice and support to Guts, who ALREADY respects him because Azan is legend in the Berserk world. Dare I say he could even "refine" Guts' rough edges.
Putting a chivalrous "bow" on Guts' barbarity. But yeah, his over-the-top chivalry IS played for laughs.

I honestly believe Azan will be like this in the later parts of the Fantasia Arc. Especially since Casca's mental state has been healed.
Like MAAD TEE said, he will definitely re-train Casca get back into fighting form alongside Isidro and Farnese [Red Mage equivalent]. I also picture him having some moments of snark, especially against Apostles.
Apostle: A coward in iron won't do much against me!

Another tragedy is that he made Azan short even though he was taller than Serpico. It's pretty hard to gauge Golden Age's Griffith skills as a swordman, since we haven't seen him fight noteworthy opponents in that time period, save for a 2 on 1 with Guts against Zodd, and 2 fights with Guts, including one that was decided in one strike.
We saw Guts fight many strong knights like Bazuso, Adon, Sampson, general Boscogn (possibly the strongest human fighter to duel Guts) and Silat.
Now Griffith... sadly, aside from the skirmish with Zodd, we only saw him cut down random soldiers =/
IMHO we don't have any solid way to determine how strong he was in his prime compared to Serpico ...

The whole dedication thing I couldn’t agree more with you. A lot of people also tend to forget about what SK said to guts. "Fight or rescue...your lover will be left alone...it won't be as simple as catching two birds." Either protect Casca, or go on an endless trip of revenge to kill Griffith. It’ll be a good conversation to have regardless on weather guts will settle down or continue to pursue Griffith but judging by the end Of the manga where Casca gets her memory back, I dunno that part where she screams when she sees guts could either mean she’s angry at what he did to her (Can’t blame her, he bit her nipple) or she still doesn’t remember him and still sees him as the monster that is his alter ego. Can’t wait for the next manga, and also keep up the good work. I like you’re vids!

It's sad to learn of Azan's (current..) fate, I was really growing to like his character, he seemed like a truly noble...well nobleman. Plus it's nice like you pointed out how he allowed us to experience a character that was seemingly religous and devout not out of fear of damnation but by genuine devotion and a sense of duty. *to be honest as far as I can tell the Berserk series seems to take a not so kindly view on religion and devoting oneself to a higher power, Guts being the ironically patron deified figure of idealized self-reliance. (which is easier I guess if you're built like a demigod already, Guts..)*

I think he's depicted well as someone with a shitty life that has accumulated in him forcing himself to change when it is the world around him at fault as he goes from the bridge knight to a knight of the holy iron chain to simply the mustache knight. When being addressed in his prior form it's clear he made an effort to forget it and it kinda goes without saying that whatever happened before affected him in the same way so idk it would be cool to show it but it is okay being left as all the pieces are there seeing as how it was most likely a less dramatic version of the reincarnation. He's a man with a strong moral compass that doesn't fit in the world around him, so he changes everything to find where he can be a virtuous knight. Its good shit

I wondered two things is he a manifestation in an archetype so that people aren’t completely cynical of concepts so the idea of evil can at least lax people onto these false hopes, or, hopes at all.
And or would there be a direct correlation between him and a apostle from a knightly back around.

      You referring to Locus?

    • @markrajca6783
      @markrajca6783 5 лет назад

Yes, Devotion to an ideal that is lofty but mundane and tested in mundane and supernatural ways; vs Devotion to an individual whom is supernatural, not yet testing this faith, not under the scrutiny of reality, not testing the faith in the 'man' vs what Locus wants to see in Griffith as a concept. It all seems fine, but what are ideals vs absolute power and absolute rule?
What excuses are made and compromises struck in one's mind to chip away at one's ideals. For someone open and practical, used to the realities of the world but pining for something they wished was true, what compromises do they subject themselves to in order to see even an perversion of that ideal come about, over the horrible mundane reality he came from.
Then look on someone who didn't break their ideals, even when they themselves broke, yet still held to their code. Faith that didn't require sacrificing their last vestiges as a broken person to become something else.

Berserk is very well written and there are very few things I would change, but Azan is definitely one of them. I see only two course of actions, that would do his character arc justice:
    1. Azan dies at his last stand in Albion, similar to his defense of the bridge, allowing others to escape
    2. He protects Luca and the prostitutes and escorts them to Falconia. Their survival without any help was very farfetched and I believe Azan with his principles and insight would be an interesting addition to the story centered around Griffith.
There is no point for him to be in the Guts's group, which is full of other people and it's still growing in numbers. Only place for him is to be a comedic relief and a teacher for Isidro, but even there he's just another next to Guts and Casca.
And even though it's not a popular opinion - I actually don't mind chestnut Puck at all - he serves his purpose as a silly, childish elf, and I find his jokes hillarious. He still heals, spies and he was a guide to Elfheim after all so I don't find his potential wasted. I think it would be silly to give him some dramatic back story, ambitions and dreams. From all the 'funny' characters out there, he's the only one who is suited to be one.

He is protected by God. Only those that know God can relate and understand his faith and existence (religious people can relate, too).
He has a purpose, and it is not to die prematurely, as indicated in all of the moments he was "left out". He would've definitely laid down his life for another, god (Miura) just hasn't presented that opportunity for him yet. "Not again" implies his desire, but inability to protect those whom he cared for. He has the will, but somehow, the universe undermines his efforts. Had he engaged in the battles, he'd have surely died.
"Reinfore my devotion" literally means joining Guts' party as a means to further serve God.
Churches and graven images are formed by man - true faith is tested by devotion. Farnese's religious actions were governed by men and status. Azan differs in that he is virtuous while holding no affiliation to any man-made religions or practices.
How selfish it is to ask for God's blessing, when only devoting 1 hour per week (168 hours) to him? If you were truly close to God, you would walk in his commandments for every second of your life, as Azan does. Hence, why he is comically safe in a world so evil.

I actually like it that some of the characters arent explored as much. It makes the story feel more focused and centred. I mean that Azans backstory could be interesting, but it just does not have any bearing on the story right now and the fact that it was not forced in is in my eyes better, as it leaves the option to explore it in the future. (Puck is bad though. I agree with you there (; )

I feel like the cast, particularly Guts' group is just bloated at this point. When something happens and the characters react there are like 8 characters in a single panel. Isma has literally no reason to be on that island, Roderick has been a nothing burguer so far, Isidro hasn't gotten any development in a while, Farnese's brother is just comedic relief, Azan tho I think can still be interesting but it doesn't make any fucking sense that no one recognised him. Also am I crazy but isn't he drawn way too short these days?? I swear he was taller in the Conviction arc.

I think there just isn’t room in the narrative at this point for him. As far as the story of Guts is concerned it is unimportant and clearly he is a knight of true honor. Considering he most likely failed in his duty once again it is possible he is both too ashamed to admit what good he did in the past and also too honorable to kill himself. I’m sure we will get a bit more out of him. Rarely is a character without a somewhat satisfying resolution.

You say "could have" and "would be" while the manga is not finished yet. Not once have we seen Miura have a character say something which didnt have its use so I think its unfair to say that he would do that with Azan. Berserk still had a 35-30% before ending had miura not died.

What do you mean? There is an unfinished character arc in an unfinished story, not that surprising really. The fact Azan is there at all means he's certainly gonna get some developed eventually. I agree his current gag is obnoxious, but don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

    • @spired8890

The timing just seems a bit weird is my issue. I understand Miura trying to find correct time and places but it's gonna seem weird and off if he talks about what actually happened after Griffiths rebirth to Serpico and Farnese in 5 years compared to when he was reintroduced for example.

    • @igorlowensahr6901
      @igorlowensahr6901 6 лет назад

As I said, his introduction has been kinda obnoxious. Maybe Miura isn't gonna play up that aspect of it, we don't know yet, it might develop into something greater. It's kinda obvious he'll get developed since he's here now, there isn't much we can comment on for the time being. These discussions tend to become very dated, because of that.
