  • Farnese is perhaps one of the most 'Human' characters in Berserk with how much the reader can understand her struggles and how they are applicable to the real world. This is the brilliance of her character and is what I wanted to discuss in this video.

    I remember during the chapters where shierke/farnese were wandering through cascas mind there were so many doubters. Many thought she would be jealous and sabotage cascas recovery somehow so seeing her so intent and on fixing casca was great. I specifically remember her words "I know what it's like to be in darkness without hope of salvation. Therefore, as he did for me back then, i will blow your darkness away." Those lines made me unexpectedly emotional and made me appreciate her and her development so much more than i had prior. Nice video

    One of the best characters! Hope you'll do one on Serpico too! He really displays the struggles of a child who has the responsebility of his parent. Always trying to live up to their expectations. Becoming numb to himself and what he wants. Which is a common trait in kids like this. I'd say he changes just as much as Farnese, although he's more subtle. From a passive observer, who just obeys. To someone who develops a will of his own, starts caring about others and himself. Best example is when he interferes between Guts and Zodd. Something he had nothing to do with, but acted anyway. Which was completely out of character, to how he used to be before meeting Guts.

    To me Berserk is a story about strength. Not so much brute strength, but the strength of humanity in all its facets. The apostles are shown to be brutishly strong, but as a human they were weak in one way or another, their apostle existence comes from their weakness and giving in to it. All the people in Guts' band are strong in their own way. That is why I also like Farnese, she has her place in the group.

    I really hated Farnese in the beginning and just wished she would disappear soon. She was annoying, violent, ignorant and her backstory didn't help to make me like her. It's quite disturbing that she gets sexually aroused by burning heretics. But as soon as she joined Guts and took care of Casca, I was really impressed by her drastic character development. Even though she was still struggling with herself, she honestly tried to make herself useful and even wanted to learn more about magic. What's even more amazing is that her character development is so drastic and still doesn't feel forced or contrived at all. I can go so far to say that she really grew on me and became my favorite female character in Berserk

      I don't know, the religious zealotry was a facade, so I can believe that quick change, but the sadism, masochism, pyrophilia, and desire for control of others was built up over her entire life prior to the events of the Conviction arc and compounded by childhood trauma. In real life (and regardless of it being a dark fantasy genre, what makes great characters is how realistic they are), people who have developed those issues without ever addressing them for 20 years, don't shake them so quickly. For most it takes years and years, many times requiring intense therapy, to get over them, if they even can at all. That's why her change doesn't sit right with me.

    Losing a religion is definitely something I can relate to. It is incredibly tough and even the early doubts make you feel guilty. I used to be very religious even sang in the choir. I had a different religion in a country with a major religion which led to me getting bullied in school which kinda strengthen my faith.
    That obviously changed when I grew up even seen in my username but that username is more about my love of metal.
    Farnese really represents moving on from hopelessness or doubt. Farnese used to be aimless in that she only obeyed the Holy See and her God but her whole world was broken. Me not believing in a God and heaven gave me all kinds of hopelessness and depression. Farnese finding inspiration in Guts and finds purpose in protecting Casca. As I found life and people around me is more important than faith. Guts fights against the darkness so if Farnese is the most relatable, Guts is the most Inspirational. If we just surrender to a higher power to save us from the darkness everything is left to chance but if you challenge the darkness you may change fate itself. In the darkness even the tiniest glimmer of light can keep us moving and fighting.

Farnese's arc seems almost complete but i think there are still some facets to explore about their relationship

  • @santiagotamulis5833
    @santiagotamulis5833 4 года назад +75

    I dont think the conviction or Farnese's arc are statements againts religion
    Yes Berserk shows the horrors and brtuality of religion but it does so with everything: war, feudalism, sex, loyalty, magic, life, death, and humanity itself.Also think about it , we get an arc about how religion is bad and followed by Millenium Empire and Fantasia where the main cast is gets help from mythical creatures from religion
    The Conviction arc is anti-zelotry not anti-religion.A key scene to show this theme is when Farnese compares herself to Nina when the tower gets destroyed by evil spirits.While the latter is too scared to live the former remains composed.Or compare the lustful canibal Heretics whose idol is a sex goat with the ppl at the tower whose idol is an angel that lead them againts the evil spirits.Also the burnings arent completely unjustified since people carry discease and an evil cult does exist because a lack of ideaology lead them to chaos and sin
    There is a limit to this however, relying solely on religion without exercising its virtues and fearing everything outside of it will limit your grow as a person and render your faith hollow wich will lead you to despair, much like Farnese with the rape horse and the mob after the pseudo apostles died.And if you take it too far your faith will blind your judgement like Mozgus and his disciples.The ideal is someone like Azan whose religion strengthens his morals but has restrain and clear judgement
    And this put a spotlight on Farnese belief , she start to devote herself to magic but like Schieke said "its not a different thing , its the same thing you praise but with a different name" she is not throwing the previous version of herself away she making it better by achieveing something outside her spirituality with Caska and expanding her worldview through her travels
    Ultimately I think Miura views on religion are much more nuanced than his readers realize

    The way in which Farnese's lust for power and sexual depravity was all just a coping mechanism for how genuinely powerless and pathetic she felt is really relatable. While we might not be pyromaniacs who have a streak for burning "heretics", we all can easily suffer from this kind of negative self-view where we moralize and believe we are "bad" and deserve to suffer. We then easily spiral out of control, hurting ourselves out of self-hatred and or turning our aggressions and vices outwards at others to soothe ourselves and to feel less weak. It is so easy to refuse to take the first step out of this cycle which is to understand ourselves without moralizing everything. Farnese utilized religious institutional power to deny her own powerlessness but when that no longer worked she had to look inwards and strengthen herself and fundamentally change the way in which she looked at herself. It's really inspirational stuff that we can apply to our own lives.

      Oops sorry for the monster comment. But yeah, I think it works in the story.
      Maybe I should of included her backstory with Serpico actually here because it explains the isolation she experienced in a lot more depth and helps make her progression away from a sadist more natural. Especially since we get this backstory right before she joins Guts group.

    • @post-leftluddite
      @post-leftluddite 4 года назад +4

      Her change is too fast to be believed for me as well.... Her religious zeal was a facade, so I get how that was smashed so easily, but the sadism, masochism, pyrophilia, the desire for excessive control, all those were built up over her entire life prior to the events at the tower, so they should take at least several years to work through. People with issues that profound and childhood trauma take years and years, sometimes requiring intense therapy, to move past if they can even do it at all, so that why I feel like it was to easy and not "earned". Perhaps I'm biased though, because I absolutely couldn't stand her before her change and also, I don't feel like she ever paid for her crimes (of needlessly burning people alive).

      Oh yeah I totally agree. I just liked seeing these more passive struggles with Farnese. Which is why I think she provides a unique character dynamic in the series

    I can relate only to the first part of Farnese's backstory. Cause I was a kid, my parents did try to get me into stuff they believed in. More specifically, my mom did. My dad was all for me making my own decisions. Sure, he got me to do a few things, but only if I saw them as fun. It almost happened in school, but I realized that trying to be like everyone else for the sake of having a bunch of fake friends, was stupid.
    When it comes to the bullying example, I was the one being bullied. It happened in middle school primarily due to how I was the "weird" kid and had gotten into my "loner" phase. That and it wasn't exactly a "good" school. There was this one time a girl tried to give me money and when I told her no, she asked if I was half-white cause, and I quote, "All black men are money hungry and thieves." Either way, I eventually fought back and they fucked off. After that it was off to high school where I made actual friends and had the best years of my life.
    As for the role model thing, I never really understood what made celebrities so special. They can act very well, doesn't mean you have to follow their every waking step. The only real life role model I've ever had is my father, and he's made it clear numerous times that he isn't perfect. Which is why he's my role model. He's always telling me to do whatever I want and don't let others tell me otherwise. Listen to good advice, but don't let others run your life for you. I can tell that he does expect somethings out of me when I grow up, but I also know he'll be happy with whatever I choose to do if it makes me happy.
    This might be why I haven't been able to relate to her as much as Guts and others.

    Love Farnese. After the occultation and the end of the Golden Age arc, I was worried about where the story was heading. The Lost Children arc was pretty entertaining, but it clearly wasn't a crucial part of the big picture. It was "just" Guts being in a shitty mood. Then... she appeared, with Serpico. After Guts/Griffith and Guts/Casca, I thought the manga would never get THAT good again, character-wise. I knew I was wrong as soon as Guts kidnapped Farnese, after he was caught by her army. There was something about that chick. Then, a few volumes later, we realized how deep her character was, and that there was something about Serpico too. Then, their backstory. Jesus. The interesting thing is that although Casca is unbeatable, we have spent much less time by her side than by Farnese's side. We've seen Farnese grow as a character much more. And that was compelling. Still is.

    I think she's good on one hand like you stated then terrible on the other hand. Out of anyone to learn magic she should be the last one to be taught it. You don't get to burn countless people to death then learn the very thing from someone she would have burned a short while ago. Like hell no

    Farnese's beautifully armored zealot version was the greatest time I have had in Berserk. In fact, it is the most unexpected and morbid enjoyment I probably ever got out of a character, but I simply could not help but be thoroughly entertained by her questionable personality, twisted tendencies, and amusingly dramatic inner conflict, and perhaps that makes me a bit of a sadist myself, but I have no regrets. I greatly enjoyed her as a desperate villain who is arguably more tragic than evil but one that I, for some morbid reason, found highly amusing.
    Therefore, I was initially quite disappointed by her character development, especially since the shy, self-conscious, helpless, unconditionally kind-hearted, and overly feminine kind of woman is usually not at all the kind of character I enjoy or have any interest in. I also rather dislike her new hairstyle. In spite of that, however, she has continued to be my favorite Berserk character, and I have come to develop a different kind of appreciation for her character and began to relate to her rather than just be amused by her. To me, her character arc is a genuine testament to the good in humanity, in particular the kind that is not always easy to see and may need some assistance to unleash its full potential.
    Farnese is someone who killed animals and tormented people in her childhood and later burned human beings alive and masturbated to it. Almost anyone would discard this kind of person as irredeemable and beyond hope - but not Miura; he was able to show that behind those twisted and horrible deeds was but a sad, lonely, scared, and confused child acting out of desperation to gain some form of approval and a place to belong, a person who has done bad things but is not inherently a bad person, a human who wants to be good and deserves a chance to be good. I think it is a beautiful message that a person's past does not define them, and that even in the darkest of places, humanity can always prevail.
    I can also relate to her on a personal level as I was far from a perfect child and now as an adult strive to be a better person and am in many ways quite inexperienced due to my own set of circumstances.

    I could be missing something, but I always thought her character change was way to quick (based on how long it takes people to truly deal with such ingrained issues in real life, e.g. years, and many times requiring therapy) I get that the events of 5he Conviction arc would shatter her worldview and her zealotry, because those were a facade to begin with, but how would that change her sadism and masachism and pyrophilia so quickly? Those "issues" were developed over an entire childhood, and for many people, childhood traumas stay with them forever. Some may say that by judging her character development on the real world isn't fair, and it may not be, but I feel as though I'm doing it because most of the other characters held up to real world criteria.

    I miss Farnese's sadomasochistic nature which she lost for no reason. This was a huge part of her personality and I was expecting it to echo in the future episodes of the party's adventures. She kinda became into a regular woman which she never was. Come to think of it, maybe it's just the way she started to carry herself because she also thinks that way about herself. Her mother also siad that she is in fact not ordinary at all.
    In addition I allways thought that her religion was actually a substitute for a better father figure she allways missed and she was very submissive towards it in a rather fetishistic perverted manner. Especially after Serpico's rejection. That's what made her into a fanatic that she've become.
    She is indeed a very cool character.
