Gelgoogs just don't get enough attention from Bandai. They've really been overshadowed by the iconography of the Zaku and Gundam fighting each other. There are so many variants of Zakus, more than I could believe could be made during the One Year War, yet the Gelgoog gets left behind. Only ZZ Gundam seemed to have any respect for this awesome mobile suit.
I agree with Brian J Cheng's comment that an update of the HGUC Gelgoog this mold is based on would be good. I don't think this is the worst of the original HG'S though, but an Origin or MSD version of a Gelgoog would be real sweet. Obviously an Origin version wouldn't be taken from the anime, as it never appeared in the six episodes. I'm not exactly sure if the Gelgoog is in the Origin Manga series. However one of the HG kits I think is in desperate need of a makeover is the Rick Dias. The existing kit looks ridiculous. I mean, Quattro's MS deserves much more respect than that.
Pass on this kit. Bandai spends all day coming out with 80 fraggin Unicorn Gundam kits and 00 Setsuna kits but can't take the time to UPGRADE an old 80's kit? Then make it Premium for not doing a thing? Naw these clowns have to learn the CORE deserves more and better. We need MG IBO kits or MG 00 kits other than Setsuna's gundams.
Well, I mean, if you meant 80s design, then yeah they didn't change anything. This kit however is based on the HGUC Gelgoog from 2007, so really it's not really anything like the old 80s kit in terms of engineering.
That color scheme! It BURNS! Completely red? Yes! Completely dark blue! Yes! But this!?!? It's PAINFUL! That said, I find it odd that the 3 lines on the shoulderpads (vents?) are opposit on each side. One is in the rear, one is in the front. I guess it was the same runner and therefore, they're just the same parts and that explain this asymetry. Also, for the missle pod, I think there's no hinge, as on the "real" machine, it would be an ejectable part. That would mean that each time a pilot use the missiles, they'd need to replace the door, but it would also be less prone to get stuck and make the missiles explode inside their pod in case of a mechanical failure.
In universe, the shoulders are what inspired the Qubeley and it's asymmetrical shoulders. As for the hinged door, that is also consistent with what's depicted in ZZ.
