I'm really glad you mentioned filling out the permit to let the forest service know you're there. I live an hour away from Mt. Rainier and a friend of mine went for what she thought was a winter day hike. Weather was coming in and she checked with the rangers to see when and what elevation it was expected, and since she wasn't going to a certain elevation, they didn't have her sign in. Long story short, weather came in lower than expected and she spent two nights stuck on the mountain without anyone looking for her. She didn't tell any friends she was going and no sign in with the rangers. After a series of events that prevented her from coming down the same day she started, she ran into a group of search and rescue people looking for a few people who did not survive the storm. They were shocked and emotional because they did not expect to run across her since there was no record of her. Moral of the story? Always let someone know where you're going when doing outdoorsy stuff and be prepared to get stuck overnight. If she didn't have her essentials and a shovel to dig a snow cave, she wouldn't be here now.

Hey Suzi, Great point! We do that as well most of the time. All of the time in the winter and always if we are going off trail or on a challenging route.

@@tahoemountainlife I'm glad you guys do, I really hope that everyone who watches your channel see this and will fill them out as well. Or check in with the rangers. I know people go missing up here all the time and are underprepared because it will be a nice, warm, sunny day and the weather changes in minutes. I'm sure it's the same way there. These places are amazing, but dangerous.

Free parking if you have the Senior Lifetime National Park pass. I left mine displayed on the dash, though worried someone might break in to steal it. Be careful far up about 1/3 up the falls since the rocks are sloped and polished, so slick even when dry. I think at 9:44, below that rock ledge. Need sticky shoes or scramble on the rocks higher up. Plenty of water still flowing in mid-Oct 2023 due to massive snowfall.

Dude. Just hiked this on my first backpack trip ever to Ropi Lake. Hardest and sketchiest hike ive done ha. Hard because of the 40+ lbs pack but the sketchy part is an understatement. And ive hiked all over California. Yosemite, lassen, death valley, etc.

Your hike reminds me of a hike I took in 2006 to Shirley Lake near Olympic Valley. Lots of granite to hike on ended up having to help carry our friends medium size dog 1/3 of the way back down due to having skinned up paws. 😮 Poor doggie, beautiful lake.

My goodness, you mean the poor dog went up without any shoes? That's not good to do. My dog always has her shoes on when hiking on rocks. Heck, when she's just walking in the neighborhood, she insists on wearing high heels!

Great video! The way you took is super sketchy near the falls. I've seen families in sandals taking that route... wild! If you stay left and go towards the big granite wall... there's a lot safer route to make it up.

Horsetail falls is a beautiful hike and there are some pretty lakes beyond the falls. My Dad took the entire family up there when my sister and I were only 10 and 7 and we really enjoyed the scrambling. You can scramble all the way up Pyramid Peak from the falls although there might still be alittle too much snow right now. Comming down in a Thunderstorm with slick rock and lightning strikes not too far away was not as fun, my mom especially didn't like that part. This was the hike that really got me interested in hiking I did a backpacking trip with my Dad every year after this. Ralston, Tallac, Mt Rose and Round Top are also great hikes although nothing compares to Yosemite/Eastern Sierra.

Crazy you did that in a storm. I just backpacked to Ropi/beyond and coming down with a 40+ lbs pack was not fun ha.

Suggestion: About that music, it came on a little strong, loud and wild for my taste. I find, it's best not to include music, so the viewer can choose his own from a 2nd RUclips page. These hikes, walks & drives are always good with the right, personal choice for music playing on a 2nd page.

@@tahoemountainlife Sure, good choice for you to Carmel. I've been shooting videos on the Sonoma coast since Jan. I have playlists on my channel. It's typically less crowded than Monterey, Santa Cruz, and Half Moon Bay. Even less crowded going North from here. But, anyway, you can't lose on spectacular scenery on the Coast.
